Notizen: Summary The birth and evolution of an air-sea coupled disturbance relevant to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events is investigated using a simple coupled aqua-planet model composed of the Gill's moist atmosphere and the Anderson-McCreary ocean. A coherent air-sea coupled disturbance with the zonal wavenumber 1 emerges from different initial disturbances either in the atmosphere or the ocean and propagates eastward as observed in the 1982/83 event. In the case of an initial westerly wind burst, oceanic Kelvin waves generated by the winds cause weak but long-lasting ocean temporature anomalies which trigger the air-sea coupled disturbance. When the initial disturbance is in the oceanic mixedlayer temperature, the coupled disturbance is excited more easily because the oceanic relaxation time is long compared to the atmospheric one. This is consistent with the result that the coupled disturbance collapses when the disturbance is forced to vanish on the oceanic side rather than on the atmospheric side.

Notizen: Abstract It is demonstrated that nonlinear Rossby modes, such as modons and IG eddies, can be excited in planetary fluids by a sufficiently strong forcing of potential vorticity. When a weak forcing is balanced with a weak dissipation, two (linear and nonlinear) equilibrium states can be produced, depending on the initial condition. When the fluid is inviscid, a sufficiently strong steady forcing may generate a sequence of propagating nonlinear eddies. A weak forcing, by contrast, only generates linear Rossby waves. The criterion which divides the high amplitude nonlinear state and the low amplitude linear state may be interpreted in terms of a ratio of a time necessary to force the eddy to a time for a fluid particle to circulate about the nonlinear eddy once.

Notizen: Abstract A three-dimensional primitive σ-coordinate model is developed to allow for tideland. The model determines the coastline position each time step based on a minimum threshold depth, and extrapolates the three-dimensional predictive variables onto tideland only when the water depth exceeds that threshold value, assuring that the extrapolation is consistent with physics as well as with the numerical scheme involved. The model is applied to an M2 tide in the northern estuary of Ariake Bay characterized by the large tideland. The model successfully simulates flood and ebb tides during which a large area of tideland is covered and uncovered with water due to the large tidal difference in sea level. The model also reproduces a strong salinity front caused by the freshwater runoff from Chikugo river. The general patterns of model-computed tidal flows and density front are consistent with data available in this region. The mean flow field averaged over a twelve hour period shows a strong northward current along the slope accompanied by anticyclonic eddies over tideland, the latter feeding a southward transport along the eastern coast. It is shown that such a circulation pattern is enhanced by the joint effect of baroclinicity and bottom relief. Finally, some implications of model results are discussed in relation to the fishery.
