Notizen: Summary The spontaneous and nitrosoguanidine inducedN-1 virus resistant mutants of the blue-green algaNostoc muscorum were isolated with the average mutation frequency of 3.55×10−5 and 6.08×10−4 respectively. Of the surviving colonies 8 per cent became virus sensitive, whereas out of the remaining 92 per cent 9.3 per cent showed lysogenic behaviour and 13.3 per cent showed poor or no nitrogen fixing ability. Mutation to virus-resistance was independent of the presence of the virus. Spontaneous host range mutants of virus were not found in repeated experiments.

Notizen: Abstract From a bloom forming blue-green alga, Anabaenopsis raciborskii, spontaneous mutants, which had lost the ability to form gas vacuoles have been isolated; the mutant frequency was 4.8×10-3. The filaments of gas vacuole-less mutants settled at the bottom of flasks in liquid culture media unlike the parent alga. The growth and nitrogen fixation were comparatively poor in the mutants.

Notizen: Abstract Sodium salt of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (80% active ingredient), commonly applied for the control of aquatic weeds, was used to observe its effect on the growth and nitrogen fixation of a heterocystous bloom forming blue-green algaAnabaenopsis raciborskii. A concentration of 10Μg per ml of 2,4-D showed stimulation of growth and nitrogen fixation and these were almost unaffected in presence of its 100Μg per ml in the medium. The alga could tolerate up to 800Μg per ml in liquid culture media with and without nitrate nitrogen and up to 90Μg per ml on to agar plates. Nitrogen fixation was inhibited in presence of its higher concentrations.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract This study was an attempt to observe the effects of temperature on adsorption and one-step growth of the virus N-1 infecting the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum. Adsorption rate was found to be maximum at 40° C whereas no adsorption occurred at 10° C. The Q 10 value was about 2.03 and the energy of activation, Ea was 16.3 kcal/ mole for the adsorption process. The development cycle of the virus was temperature sensitive. With increase in temperature, a gradual increase in inhibition of virus yield i.e. 8.33% at 30° C, 35.3% at 35° C and complete inhibition at 40° C was observed. Out of 7 h latent period, the early 4 h were temperature sensitive and heat treatment had a reversible inhibitory effect on virus development. The temperature treatment did not affect the rise period but burst-size was reduced.

Notizen: Abstract Role of brain monoamines in the hypothermic activity of cannabis resin (CI) in albino rats was studied using agents which influence monoamine synthesis, storage, release, reuptake, metabolism and receptor activity and monoaminergic neuronal activity. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol content of resin was estimated to be 17%. Reserpine was used for comparison. CI was given orally in the dose of 50 mg/kg. Nialamide (NM) and α-methyl-metatyrosine (MMT) caused slight hyperthermia. p-Chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), α-methyl-p-tyrosine (MPT), 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine (DHT, icv) and 6-hydroxydopamine (6-HD, icv) had no effect on body temperature. α-Methyldopa (m-Dopa), diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC), DDC with l-Dopa, gammabutyrolactone (GBL), phentolamine (PHENT), phenoxybenzamine (PBZ), propranolol (PROP) and imipramine (IMP) produced hypothermia. Hypothermic activity of CI was potentiated by NM and PCPA, unaffected by DHT and m-Dopa, blocked by MMT, MPT, 6-HD, GBL, PHENT, PROP and chlorpromazine (CPZ), inhibited by DDC, DDC and l-Dopa and PBZ. CI induced hyperthermia in tolerant rats could be reversed to hypothermia by IMP. Reserpine hypothermia was blocked by NM, MPT, 6-HD and CPZ. There was a partial cross tolerance between cannabis and reserpine. Studies indicate that the hypothermic activity of CI similar to that of reserpine is mediated through central catecholamines and not 5-HT, and that noradrenaline is involved and not dopamine. However, the mechanism of action of cannabis and reserpine on nor-adrenergic neurone seems to be different.

Notizen: Abstract High resolution rotation-vibration spectra of Δv = 1 and 2 sequences of 24MgH+ are obtained by a differencing process invoking the known structures of electronic bands observed in the region 214–340 nm. A reversal of R branch (band head formation) is noticed in each of the rotation-vibration bands. The J = 1 → J = 0 transition is predicted to be at 376098, 365301, 354286 and 342981 MHz for v = 0,1,2 and 3, respectively, in the ground electronic state 1∑+. The equilibrium rotational constants B e, α e and r e for the X 1•E+ state are found 6.4637cm−1, 0.1899 cm−1 1.6421 Å, respectively.
