Notes:
Summary Spiral arteries are searched on the maternal surface of freshly delivered placentas by using a method published by Wigglesworth. The spiral arteries were taped with fine nylon intravenous canula. A trituration of egg-white and Indian ink or a coloured barium solution is being injected. The placentas are examined microscopically and macroscopically after fixation in 10% formal saline. We discovered distinct differences in maturity between the villi situated in the center and those of the periphery which confirms the theory of the existence of constant materno-fetal circulation-units. The often described socalled juvenile villi could be localized in areas of the circulation-unit which are perfused sufficiently with arterialized maternal bloot till the end of pregnancy. They must be considered—with regard to the differences between the “adult” villi of the center and those of the periphery of the circulationunit — as “reserve villi” of the placenta. They are the morphological expression of the physiologically maintained ability of the placenta to adapt itself until term to the rising needs of the fetus. The placenta at term is physiologically not an aged but a mature organ.
