    Notizen: A series of synthetic germination stimulants for the plant parasites Striga and Orobanche has been prepared. These compounds, analogues of the natural Striga germination stimulant, strigol (I), (Cook et al., 1966, 1972) cause signiticant germination of Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. seed at concentrations as low as 10−9 M, and an even greater activity against species of Orobanche has been demonstrated. Initial outdoor box trials of the compounds against Striga asiatica (L.) O. Ktze. in Hyderabad, India, have shown a reduction of up to 65% of the seed after a single treatment of the soil 6 weeks before the planting of the sorghum host.

    Notizen: Abstract The levels in the ground band of184Pt are identified up to the member with spin 20 in an in-beam spectroscopy experiment on theγ-rays following the177Hf(12C, 5n)184Pt reaction. In contrast to the situation in the heavier Pt isotopes, where the 10+ to 12+ level spacing is very small, the transition energies in184Pt show a monotonie increase with spin. However, between spin 10+ and 14+ the moment of inertia grows quite rapidly and this appears to be reminiscent of the much more pronounced irregularity encountered in the isotopes of larger mass. This property of the moment of inertia is discussed within a model where twoi 13/2 neutron quasiparticles or twoh 9/2 orh 11/2 proton quasiparticles may be excited and coupled to the rotation of the core.

    Notizen: Summary To improve the chances of obtaining highly self-incompatible inbred lines for use as parents of F1 hybrid Brussels sprouts and to extend the range of mutually cross-compatible combinations available, new inbred lines are being produced from plants selected for the presence of dominant S-alleles. The material comprises 42 different inbred families representing 15 cultivars and contains 12 dominant S-alleles of uncommon occurrence in Brussels sprouts. Data on S-allele interactions in the material are presented. Tests showed that whilst many of the parent plants containing dominant S-alleles were highly self-incompatible, a few had only weak self-incompatibility. Although the chances of obtaining strongly self-incompatible inbreds may be increased by using material with dominant S-alleles, it remains necessary to test and select for strong self-incompatibility during the breeding programme. Production of such inbred lines requires the application of two independent selection procedures, one for agronomic type and one for S-allele constitution. Only a small proportion of the plants of a parent cultivar are acceptable on both counts. Thus large populations of the cultivar and large numbers of selections are necessary: this in turn involves much expensive S-allele screening. To alleviate this problem a wide-based panmix containing only dominant S-alleles is being produced. It is hoped that from this it will be possible to extract inbred lines which carry only dominant S-alleles, so avoiding the need to screen each parent plant for its S-allele content.

    Notizen: The biocompatibility of nitinol alloy as a potential implant material was investigated through in vivo studies on beagles. A high-purity alloy was fabricated into prototype bone plates and implanted into the femurs of beagles. Commercial cobalt-chromium (Co—Cr) alloy bone plates served as reference controls, and additional control data were obtained from beagles subjected to “sham” operations.The bone plates were removed from the animals and examined after exposures of 3, 6, 12, and 17 months. There was no evidence of either localized or of general corrosion on the surfaces of the bone plates and screws. Gross clinical, radiological, and morphological observations of the tissue at the implantation sites during the autopsies uncovered no signs of adverse tissue reactions resulting from the implants. Histological analyses were performed on samples of muscle and bone adjacent to the implantation sites, and of tissues removed from such organs as the liver, spleen, brain, and kidneys. No significant differences were noted between samples taken from controls and those taken from dogs exposed to the implants. Neutron activation analyses were carried out on suitable samples. The analysis data suggest that there is no metallic contamination in the organs due to the implants; however, there does appear to be some chromium contamination from the Co—Cr alloy implants in the adjacent bone.On the basis of the totality of the data, it is concluded that nitinol alloy is sufficiently compatible with dog tissue to warrant further investigation of its potential as a biomaterial.
