Notes: Abstract Sodium salt of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (80% active ingredient), commonly applied for the control of aquatic weeds, was used to observe its effect on the growth and nitrogen fixation of a heterocystous bloom forming blue-green algaAnabaenopsis raciborskii. A concentration of 10Μg per ml of 2,4-D showed stimulation of growth and nitrogen fixation and these were almost unaffected in presence of its 100Μg per ml in the medium. The alga could tolerate up to 800Μg per ml in liquid culture media with and without nitrate nitrogen and up to 90Μg per ml on to agar plates. Nitrogen fixation was inhibited in presence of its higher concentrations.

Notes: Abstract This study was an attempt to observe the effects of temperature on adsorption and one-step growth of the virus N-1 infecting the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum. Adsorption rate was found to be maximum at 40° C whereas no adsorption occurred at 10° C. The Q 10 value was about 2.03 and the energy of activation, Ea was 16.3 kcal/ mole for the adsorption process. The development cycle of the virus was temperature sensitive. With increase in temperature, a gradual increase in inhibition of virus yield i.e. 8.33% at 30° C, 35.3% at 35° C and complete inhibition at 40° C was observed. Out of 7 h latent period, the early 4 h were temperature sensitive and heat treatment had a reversible inhibitory effect on virus development. The temperature treatment did not affect the rise period but burst-size was reduced.

Notes: Abstract Cobalt alloys containing up to 25% chromium have been exposed to Ar-10% SO2 atmospheres at temperatures between 600 and 1000° C. The results show that, although an increase in chromium content leads to a reduction in the reaction rate, even to negligible rates in the cases of the higher chromium contents, all of the alloys are eventually subjected to rapid attack at more or less longer times, depending on the chromium content. The mechanism of the reaction appears to involve the formation of a more or less protective oxide layer which is eventually penetrated by sulfur. The sulfur forms chromium sulfides at the metal-scale interface, removing the chromium from solution and causing an expansion that cracks the protective scale, allowing both the ingress of gas and the formation of rapidly growing cobalt compounds. The process occurs rapidly with Co-5% Cr alloys, whereas, only the initial sulfur penetration is observed with Co-25% Cr alloys during the time scale of the investigation. The penetration of sulfur is thought to occur as a molecular gas species permeating through the scale down physical defects.

Notes: Abstract The effect of Coqblin-Schrieffer-type interaction between conduction and rare-earth ion localized electrons on the superconducting order parameter δ of some ternary compounds is studied. A reentrant behavior of the order parameter is found. Superconductivity can be destroyed at two temperatures: at T c1 due to thermal pair breaking, and at T C2(〈 Tc1), when δ = Φ, Φ being related to magnetic ordering of rare-earth ions and spin polarization of conduction electrons.
