Notes: A recently marketed direct filling resin, Isosite, does not have an inorganic filler. This material is offered as a hand-mixed, two-paste system (Isopast) and is also available in capsulated form and as an ultraviolet activated sytem. Since it is well known that direct filling resins used hitherto are capable of causing pulpal irritation, especially in deep cavities, the pulpal response to Isopast was investigated. The experimental animals were twenty-four vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Under general anaesthesia a labial cavity was cut in each of the eight incisor teeth (maxillary and mandibular) of each animal. In each animal two cavities were filled with unlined Isopast, two with Isopast over a lining of calcium hydroxide cement, two with silicate cement and two with zinc oxide/eugenol cement. The animals were killed at intervals of 2, 28 and 56 days. The teeth recovered were decalcified and stained for histological examination. Of the total of 192 specimens sixty-five were discarded, two because of accidental pulpal exposure, one because of leakage and sixy-three because of technical defects in the preparation of the material, leaving 126 specimens available for assessment. This was done independently by three examiners who did not know which materials had elicited the reactions observed. It was found that after 2 days unlined Isopast caused more pulpal disturbance than other materials. After 28 and 56 day intervals lined Isopast caused less disturbance than the other materials. The maker's recommendation that linings should be used is confirmed.

Notes: To most Frenchmen of the revolutionary generation the south conjured up a stereotype image of militant royalism in which bizarrely accoutred peasants followed ci-devant seigneurs and priests into battle and murder gangs toiled under a burning sun. The principal weakness of such a view lies not in the factual detail nor even in the presumption that the entire population was insurgent, but in its essentially linear perspective. As a recent historian has observed, the south can be characterized not only by its fervent royalist commitment but also by its predilection for the politics of extremes. The complicating and exacerbating factor in this southern counter-revolutionary equation was the presence of a parallel and equally uncompromising loyalty to the Republic. Of course, both stances were rationalizations whose ideological content needs careful weighing, but their interaction in small and often volatile communities provided counter-revolution with a dynamic which perpetuated confrontation and drove each side to extremes of savagery and fanaticism.

Notes: Caries prevalence and distributions were studied in 761 South African high school pupils aged 17 years in four ethnic groups, living in urban (low F) and rural (low and high F) areas. Mean DMFT values were significantly higher among White pupils than all other groups. Comparison of mean DMFT among the Black pupils showed that urban Black dwellers had a significantly higher score than rural pupils when caries-free individuals were included in the analysis, but not when scores for only those with a DMFT of 1 or more were compared. No significant differences were found between the DMFT values of Black rural pupils living in high or low fluoride areas. Among Black rural pupils, dental caries was approximately three times more common in permanent second molars compared with permanent first molars. In urbanized Black, Coloured, Indian and White subjects, the molars were approximately equally affected.

Notes: Specimens of oral mucosa were taken from alveolar mucosa, attached gingiva, cheek, floor of mouth, hard palate, lip, soft palate and tongue from vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), and prepared for histological and histometric examination. Masticatory mucosa showed an epithelial-connective tissue union comprised of prominent thin rete pegs and connective tissue papillae. Lining mucosa had broader rete pegs and short connective tissue papillae. Elastic fibres were seen in all tissues except hard palate and attached gingiva. Histometric examination showed considerable variation in epithelial width and cell densities between the various epithelia. Tongue had the widest epithelium and alveolar mucosa the narrowest. Cell density was greatest in alveolar mucosa and least in cheek and floor of the mouth epithelium.

Notes: [Auszug] The Arctic Ocean is divided into the Eurasian and Amerasian basins, separated by the Lomonosov Ridge. Proponents of seafloor spreading have generally agreed that the Eurasian Basin orginated through Cenozoic spreading about the Nansen (Gakkel) Ridge1. The origin of the Amerasian Basin, bounded by ...

Notes: [Auszug] Plausible patterns for temperature and precipitation changes accompanying a general global warming, such as might occur due to a large increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, are presented. The patterns are determined by comparing the five warmest years in the period 1925–74 with the ...
