Notes: [Auszug] CaTiSiO5 glasses were prepared by melting an intimately mixed charge of calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide and silica at 1,450 C for 1 h, followed by casting 1-cm diameter cylinders in stainless steel moulds. The tendency of the glass to crystallize or phase separate was avoided by keeping the ...

Notes: Summary To examine the effects of pollen and resource availability on floral display and fruit set in Chilopsis linearis three different types of experimental manipulations were performed. Pollen availability to individual inflorescences was altered by combinations of hand-pollinations and/or pollinator exclusions. Number of flowers produced per inflorescence was determinate; it was not affected by pollination, although flowers of the unpollinated treatment lasted longer. Fruit set was increased over natural levels by an average of 540% by hand-pollinating individual inflorescences. There was also a negative correlation between inflorescence size and percent fruit set in all treatments tested. Attempts to vary resources available to individual inflorescences and entire trees showed no significant effect on fruit set. These results show that, at the level of individual inflorescences, fruit and seed production in Chilopsis linearis are pollen limited and not resource limited. The problem of testing for resource limitation of female reproductive success in iteroparous plants and the effect of inflorescence size on female components of fitness are also discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Wir untersuchten das Diffusionsverhalten von Cäsium und Silber in den technischen Hochtemperatur-Werkstoffen Nimocast 713 LC, Nimonic 86, Inconel 625 und TZM.
Notes: Summary In order to study the diffusion behaviour of caesium and silver in the technical high-temperature alloys Nimocast 713 LC, Nimonic 86, Inconel 625 and TZM, corresponding samples with polished surfaces were vacuum annealed between 700 and 1050° C for times between 170 and 5500 hr at Cs and Ag partial pressures of 10−6 mm Hg respectively. Post-exposure ion-microprobe mass analysis (IMMA) of a series of such samples, resulted in layer-stripping by sputtering and multielement depth profiles. The data were interpreted quantitatively with a physical model called the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) model, and in some cases with the aid ofγ-spectroscopy with use of radioactive tracing materials. The results are discussed in terms of a comparison between the two approaches, and the quantitative concentration profiles are being used in a study of the diffusion behaviour in such systems. Good agreement with existing Cs diffusion data in pure nickel or molybdenum has been achieved.

Notes: Summary We have investigated glucose homeostasis and insulin response to glucose in seven rats before, during and after pregnancy, who were previously successfully transplanted with a single fetal pancreas. Increased need for insulin during pregnancy provides an opportunity to test the reserve capacity of the transplanted organ. Plasma glucose in seven rats was normal before pregnancy (7.3±0.7 mmol/l), during pregnancy (6.6 ±1 mmol/l) and after parturition (6.7 ±0.3 mmol/l). Fasting plasma glucose was lower after parturition (5.1±1 mmol/l) than before pregnancy (6.1±0.7 mmol/l). The disappearance rate of injected glucose was the same before (2.3±0.2%/min) as after pregnancy (2.6±0.2%/min). Basal plasma insulin before pregnancy was elevated and there was no rise from glucose; after parturition the basal and pattern of response was normal. The total insulin content of the transplants (859±154 mU) was only 21% of that of normal rats; we conclude that this provides a reserve adequate for the needs of pregnancy.

Notes: Summary A monoclonal antibody raised to gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) has been compared with conventional rabbit and guinea-pig antisera to GIP. Four staining methods were tested and of these the peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) method proved to give the best results with both the mouse and rabbit antibodies. The monoclonal antibody, when used to stain pancreatic tissue, gave negative results whereas a distinct population of gut endocrine cells was readily demonstrable, suggesting that GIP is not a constituent of the mammalian pancreas. The monoclonal antibody was found to be the most sensitive for immunocytochemistry achieving the titre of 1:106 in rat gut. A C-terminal specific antibody, with a high affinity and avidity to GIP, it was clearly the preferred antibody for immunocytochemical studies.

Notes: Summary The relationship between the polypeptide composition and the agglutination behaviour of the lectin-containing G2/albumin protein groups has allowed the identification of the active lectin polypeptides in different cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris (Brown et al. accompanying paper). These results were used to ascertain the particular G2/albumin group contained in the various lectin sources used previously for the purification of lectin proteins. Many studies were found to have included lectin sources which contained the same G2/albumin pattern (TG2) and this common denominator has permitted the direct comparison of the properties reported for these purified lectins. Thus, much of the extensive literature on bean lectins is concurred.
