Notizen: Abstract Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss exposed to nutrient enriched media (0.1 mM PO4; 1.0 mM NH 4 + ) by pulse feeding 2 h every third day for a period of 5 wk at 20°C and 25–30‰ salinity showed significantly higher rates of photosynthesis regardless of photon flux density correlated with increased pigment levels. Algae in nonenriched media showed significantly higher levels of soluble carbohydrates and decreased levels of phycoerythrin and chlorophyll a. Photosynthetic and respiratory responses to temperature 15°, 25°, 30°C and salinity (15, 25, 30‰ S) combinations indicate broad tolerances by both nutrient enriched and non-nutrient enriched algae. Photosynthetic and respiratory rates were highest at the high temperatures. Pulse-fed algae had significantly higher photosynthetic rates than non-nutrient enriched plants at all temperature and salinity combinations. Non-nutrient enriched algae had significantly higher respiratory rates than nutrient enriched algae at only 30°C and 15‰. The respiratory rates of both nutrient enriched and non-nutrient algae decreased under combinations of higher temperatures and salinities. G. verrucosa, grown without nutrients, has lower tolerances to environmental stresses.

Notizen: Summary A new procedure has been worked out to establish restriction maps. The method is fast, does not in general require labeled DNA and has been applied to map the linear palindromic rDNA ofPhysarum with the restriction enzymeBstEII.

Notizen: Abstract Trapping and particle reflection coefficients for 0.4–10keVD on graphite have been measured for angles of incidence 0≦α≦85° by determining the areal density of implanted D as a function of the implanted fluence. The experimental data are compared to computer calculations with the TRIM-program. The agreement between measurement and calculation is good.

Notizen: Summary Breeding tobacco resistant to CMV using Holmes' resistant line was initiated in 1966. The resistance was controlled by five genes. N from N. glutinosa, rm1 and rm2 from Ambalema and t1 and t2 from T.I. 245. The genotype of Holmes' resistant line was assumed to be NNrm1rm1rm2rm2t1t1t2t2, which showed a few-small-late (FSL) lesion reaction to TMV. This reaction facilitates the selection of CMV resistant plants in a segregating population. Hicks Broadleaf was crossed to Holmes' resistant line and backcrossed to the susceptible varieties Vam-fen-Hicks, Kutsaga 51 and T.T.4. Two resistant lines, 418 and 470, were selected and tested for their CMV resistance, yield and agronomic characters in 1976–1979. The % reduction of infection rate when compared with a check was 41.8% and 52.7% respectively. The two lines outyielded the check and had slightly higher value/kg leaf tobacco and lower % midrib. They were also taller and later maturing. Line 470 showed slight leaf-wilting in the early growth stage, which disappeared after topping. Smoking tests showed that the two lines had better scores than check T.T.5. The nicotine and tar contents in the cigarette smoke stream proved that the leaf quality was acceptable. The lines 418 and 470 were registered as T.T.6 and T.T.7.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of a silicone oil environment on deformation modes and tensile behaviour of poly(methylmethacrylate) were investigated. Tests were made on samples coated with oils of varying viscosity, ranging from 5 to 1000 cSt. To investigate the effects of polymer molecular weight on environmentally induced craze growth and stability, tests were conducted on an extruded grade of relatively low molecular weight and on a cast grade of high molecular weight. All of the silicone oils acted as crazing agents and tensile strength and ductility were reduced in value as the viscosity of the oil was lowered. The low molecular weight polymer failed in a brittle manner in all environments but developed earlier and more intensive crazing as the liquid viscosity was reduced. The high molecular weight material underwent a ductile-brittle transition when the environment was changed from air to low viscosity silicone oils. The flow of the oil into existing flaws and crazes was sufficiently impeded at 1000 cSt viscosity so that both necking and surface crazing were observed under these conditions. To illustrate the various deformation and fracture modes that were observed, micrographs of free and fracture surfaces are presented and discussed.

Notizen: The performance of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers under alternating stresses has been examined. Information has been obtained concerning the influence of acrylonitrile content and of molecular weight on thermal effects due to hysteresis, on cyclic lifetime to craze initiation, on average cycles to fracture, and on fatigue fracture surface morphology. The influence of an elastomeric second phase has been determined by comparing fatigue performance under comparable conditions of both styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). The stress concentrating effects of the rubber particles cause earlier initiation of fatigue-induced damage and lower fatigue fracture resistance. The fatigue-induced specimen temperature rise is greater in ABS than SAN and it increases linearly with test frequency and as the square of the stress amplitude. The fracture surface morphology of ABS, which differs from that of unmodified SAN and also from that of rubber modified polystyrene, is discussed.
