Notes: Epitaxial thin films of LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 were grown on sapphire substrates by the rf-magnetron sputtering method. Structural characterization was made by several spectroscopic measurements: x-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical absorption. We obtained epitaxial thin films with lattice-mismatched strained layers, without misfit defects which are usually created at the interface. Impurity-ion (Nd3+ and Cr3+) doped films were also grown; these films had larger refractive indices than the pure films. Furthermore, the heteroepitaxial thin films of up to 10 alternating LiNbO3/LiTaO3 layers were successfully grown, and their periodic structures were studied by optical second-harmonic generation.

Notes: Abstract A case of caecal duplication in a 36-h-old neonate is described. The patient presented with vomiting and an abdominal mass and the barium enema finding was initially suggestive of intussusception. At laparotomy a duplication cyst completely obstructing the lumen was found. This was considered to have given the radiological picture simulating intussusception.

Notes: Abstract Thalictrum minus cells immobilized in calcium-alginate beads were cultured in a newly devised bioreactor for the purpose of producing berberine. This system could prevent cells from leaking out of the beads, allowing them to release most of the berberine synthesized into the liquid medium. Furthermore, the biosynthetic capability of the immobilized cells was found to be comparable to that of freely suspended cells.

Notes: Abstract Computed tomographic (CT) scans were obtained from eight infants and young children with herpes simplex virus encephalitis. In two cases the initial scan showed diffuse edematous changes as a mass effect without laterality. Unilateral localized low attenuation in the initial scan was evident 4 days after the onset in one patient, and high attenuation in the initial scan appeared on the 6th day in another patient, but in general, it was not possible to establish an early diagnosis of herpes simplex virus encephalitis from CT scan. In the longitudinal study the calcification with ventriculomegaly appeared in 3 of 5 survivors, and gyriform calcification in 2 of 3 patients, respectively. The appearance of multicystic encephalomalacia was evident in one patient 6 months after the onset of neonatal herpes simplex encephalitis. It is shown that the CT findings of neonates and young children with herpes simplex encephalitis are different from those of older children and adults, and the importance of longitudinal CT studies was stressed in clarifying the pathophysiology of the central nervous system involvement in survivors.

Notes: Summary Purified Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus was solubilized under reducing condition by using 2-merceptoethanol (2 ME) or nonreducing condition without 2 ME and its structural proteins were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS-PAGE), followed by the Western blotting using polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against JE. The mobilities and reactivities against polyclonal anti-serum of V 3 (E) and V 2 (C) were reduced when virion was disrupted under reducing condition. The 54 K band corresponding to V 3 was treated with cyanogen bromide (CNBr) and analyzed by the second SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. By Coomassie Blue staining multiple bands of molecular weight ranging from 54 K to 8 K daltons were revealed for CNBr-treated V 3. For the specimens disrupted under reducing condition, uncleaved 54 K and cleaved 8 K, 14 K, 45 K, and 48 K bands were reactive by one of the JE and Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) crossreactive monoclonal antibodies (NARMA 16), while other monoclones did not show any reactivity. The uncleaved V 3 prepared under nonreducing condition was reactive with several monoclones to almost similar levels. After CNBr treatment, the antigenic epitope(s) for a flavivirus-common monoclone (NARMA 24) and those for NARMA 16 appeared to locate on different fragments, while the epitopes for other monoclones lost their antigenicities. These results indicate the importance of disulfide bond and highly organized structure to maintain some of the epitopes on V 3.

Notes: Abstract We have described the clinical and biochemical status of two patients with tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) deficiency due to impaired dihydrobiopterin biosynthesis. BH4 administration appeared to improve the mental and psychological status more than did neurotransmitter replacement therapy alone. This enhancement of activities of daily life was seen with a dose of BH4 as low as 1.25 mg kg−1 day−1. Granulocyte adherence capacity was below normal and recovered after BH4 therapy in both patients. B-cell differentiation capacity was altered either before or after therapy.

Notes: Abstract The coprecipitation behaviour of uranium or thorium with barium sulfate is investigated from the variation of yields with uranium or thorium concentration, acid and acidity, and amount of sodium and/or potassium sulfate. Uranium or thorium in quantities less than 1.5 mg is quantitatively coprecipitated with barium (5.9 mg) sulfate when using an optimum conditions. The chemical form of uranium in barium sulfate precipitates is discussed by determination of mole ratio of potassium to uranium.

Notes: Abstract The destructive determination method of alpha emitters in various combustible solid materials has been investigated by a combination of acid digestion and coprecipitation with barium sulfate. It was consequently established that the method described in the paper may be applicable to determine alpha activities in the practical wastes.
