Notes: Extensive networks of metastable ions link the major peaks in the electron impact mass spectra of two crown ethers containing 2,6-pyrido units. High-resolution mass measurements and the metastable peaks allow the elucidation of the fragmentation pathways. The spectra are influenced more by the presence of aromatic substituents than by the 2,6-pyrido units.

Notes: Abstract Films of GaAs, heavily doped with Sn, which have been grown by molecular-beam epitaxy are found to contain single-crystal Sn particles situated in the nearsurface region of the epilayer GaAs. The morphology and chemical composition of the particles have been examined by using cross-section transmission electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Different growth conditions were used to study the Sn-particle formation and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate microstructures. The observations are discussed in terms of several models previously proposed for these phenomena.

Notes: A technique has been adapted to measure the relative change in the acoustic velocity of materials at frequencies up to 500 MHz with a maximum sensitivity of one part in 107. This technique is applied to the measurement of the temperature coefficient of the longitudinal-acoustic velocity of fused quartz over the temperature range 28–47 °C. The longitudinal velocity is observed to increase linearly over this temperature range. The temperature coefficient of the fractional longitudinal velocity increase of fused quartz is determined to be (1.075±0.025)×10−4 °C−1. This number is in agreement with the results of previous investigators and is the most accurate measurement available at room temperature.

Notes: The microstructure of the nickel silicide, Ni5Si2, which forms during solid-state reactions using self-supporting Ni-Si lateral-diffusion couples, has been studied using high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and selected-area electron diffraction. Two different structures for Ni5Si2 have been identified, one of which is consistent with the crystal structure which has been reported to have an actual composition of Ni31Si12. There is evidence for the existence of a third structure. Variations in the distribution of these structures and the presence of planar defects may account for the reported composition range of Ni5Si2 in the Ni-Si phase diagram. The observed HREM images are compared with computer simulated images.

Notes: Magnetic graphite intercalation compounds (GIC's) allow a controlled separation of atomically abrupt magnetic layers by variation of the stage of the sample. Thus very small J'/J values (∼10−4) and quasi-two-dimensional behavior can be achieved where J' and J are, respectively, the interplanar and intraplanar exchange constants. The applicability of a 2D XY model is established by a comparison of the high-temperature susceptibility with the high-temperature series expansions for the various 2D and 3D models. Low-temperature studies provide values for magnetic interactions pertinent to the most interesting intermediate temperature range, where a 2D XY bound vortex phase may occur.

Notes: Abstract The paper investigates quantitative differences in the signal characteristics of ventricular fibrillation (VF) and other cardiac arrhythmias. The analysis procedure comprises two steps: calculation of a short-term autocorrelation function (ACF) followed by a regression test on a plot of peak magnitudes of the ACF against lag values (the ACF/lag plot). We detect VF by testing the hypothesis that the ACF/lag plot of VF does not pass a linear regression test. Analysis of 31 separate episodes (of VF and other ventricular arrhythmias), each comprising three successive segments of 1·5s each produced the following results: (1) 100 per cent sensitivity (Se), 62 per cent specificity (Sp) and 74 per cent test efficiency (TE) after analysis of the first segment; (2) 100 per cent Se, 86 per cent Sp and 90 per cent TE after the second segment; and (3) 100 per cent Se, 100 per cent Sp and 100 per cent TE after the third segment. This method quantifies the notion that VF signals are nonperiodic with a random amplitude distribution, whereas ventricular tachycardia (VT) signals are usually periodic with more uniform amplitude distributions. Accurate discrimination and identification of VF can be very important in intensive-care settings, as well as in the design of automatic cardioverters and defibrillators.

Notes: Abstract Dibutyl-and monobutylphosphoric acid in acidic toluene medium were determined by ion chromatography. The procedure involved stripping with dilute sodium hydroxide solution and used carbon tetrachloride as diluent, then detection with a conductivity meter. The effect of flow rate, eluent strength and stripping solution, the effect of chloride and nitrate ion on DBP, the effect on DBP in sodium hydroxide solution, and the effect of organic aliphatic acids were discussed. The detection limits of 0.19 ppm and 0.14 ppm were found for DBP and MBP, respectively.

Notes: The translational diffusion coefficients for three relatively short, nearly monodisperse polystyrene chains (with molecular weights 2000, 4000, and 9000) in liquid cyclohexane have been measured up to 523.2 K using the extended Taylor dispersion method. The resultant hydrodynamic radii are successfully interpreted with the freely jointed chain model corrected for the approximations intrinsic to Kirkwood's theory with Stokes' radius as the only adjustable parameter, which is found to decrease with chain length but approach a constant value for long enough chains. The experimentally observed hydrodynamic radii of polystyrene standards with molecular weights 17,500, 50,000 and 100,000 at 308.2 K conform quite well to the values predicted with the approach formulated in this work.
