Notes: 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1The age-related changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) were studied in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats from 4 to 20 weeks of age.2Intra-arterial blood pressure (BP) was continuously recorded for 24 h in conscious, freely moving rats. Twenty-four hour MAP and HR were calculated by an online computer. Baroreflex sensitivity was measured by phenylephrine infusion.3In SHR, BRS was significantly lower than in WKY as early as 4-5 weeks, at which time MAP in SHR was only slightly raised. During subsequent weeks, rapid increase in MAP occurred in SHR, in association with progressive bradycardia.4It was concluded that a reduced BRS may be detected in young prehypertensive SHR and this impairment of BRS may be central in origin.

Notes: Abstract Comparative studies were carried out on the morphology and dimensions of embryonic hooks inDiphyllobothrium nihonkaiense, D. latum, andD. dendriticum. The distinctive characteristics ofD. nihonkaiense were recognized in the whole figure of the hooks, especially the middle pair, and the ratio of the length of the blade: total length in the lateral hooks. Analysis of the embryonic hooks is valuable as the criterion in the taxonomy ofD. nihonkaiense.

Notes: Abstract Three-dimensional observation was carried out on plerocercoids and adults ofDiphyllobothrium dendriticum, D. ditremum, D. latum, andD. vogeli using scanning electron microscopy. The species-specific differences between plerocercoids were recognized in the shapes of the whole body, scolex, and bothrium and the wrinkle pattern on the body surface. The differences between adult worms were also observed in the shapes of the scolex, neck, and genital papillae around the genital pore and the pattern on the egg surface. The significance of species specificity in the three-dimensional morphology of diphyllobothriid cestodes is briefly discussed.

Notes: Summary In male and female dd-mice at 4, 7, and 14 weeks of age and in 7 and 14-week-old mice gonadectomized at 4 weeks of age, the number of osteoclasts and the number and size of bone resorption areas along the surface of bone trabeculae in the distal metaphysis of the femur were determined. Osteoclasts were counted at the light-microscopic level in paraffin sections of decalcified femora. The number and size of the bone resorption areas were examined by scanning electron microscopy of femora after removing organic material by means of KOH and NaOCl treatment. In untreated mice, the number of osteoclasts and the number and size of bone resorption areas showed no sex differences at 4 weeks of age but were larger in females than males at 7 and 14 weeks of age. In gonadectomized mice, the number of osteoclasts and the bone resorption areas increased in males and decreased in females. The results of the gonadectomy experiments suggest that bone resorption in young adult mice is stimulated by female sex hormone and inhibited by male sex hormone.

Notes: Abstract Maximal immersions of a surfaceM 2 inton-dimensional Lorentz space which are isometric to a fixed holomorphic mapping ofM 2 into complex Lorentz space are determined. The main tool is an adaption of Calabi's Rigidity Theorem. Such an adaption is necessary because of the existence of degenerate hyperplanes in complex Lorentz space.
