Notes: CeO2 layer was epitaxially grown for the first time on both (111) and (100) silicon substrates by vacuum evaporation. Characterization using Rutherford backscattering and reflection high-energy electron diffraction proved that a CeO2 layer on (111) Si has considerably good crystalline quality, whereas that on (100)Si contains a large amount of crystallographic defects, especially in the vicinity of the CeO2/Si interface. Auger electron spectroscopy analysis showed a uniform concentration distribution of Ce and O throughout the epitaxial layer.

Notes: A new approach to dry etching of GaAs, digital etching, has been demonstrated. In digital etching, the etchant and an energetic beam, which induces chemical sputtering at the surface, alternately impinge onto the surface. Electrons and Cl2 gas were used as the energetic beam and the etchant, respectively, in the present experiment. Etching rates of 1/3 monolayer/cycle, independent of Cl2 flux and electron current density, were obtained. The present results show that an inherent self-limiting mechanism is involved and that the etching process is limited by the adsorption of etchant. This digital etching technique is expected to be applied to the fabrication of well-defined quantum wire and quantum box structures.

Notes: Abstract Hepatic energy metabolism was assessed by measuring the blood ketone body ratio (KBR), that is, the ratio of acetoacetate to β-hydroxybutyrate in the arterial blood, in 31 brain-dead patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) in Japan and in 25 donors just before procurement of the liver for transplantation in Germany. In the study in Japan, 7 of the 12 brain-dead patients treated with highdose catecholamine showed significantly decreased KBRs, revealing the detrimental effect of catecholamine on livermmetabolism. In contrast, 8 of the 9 untreated patients with blood pressure below 80 mm Hg showed almost normal KBRs. In the 25 donors in Germany, KBR was maintained within the normal range. Based upon conventional criteria, 21 livers were selected for use and the other 4 were discarded. Nineteen of the grafts were able to normalize KBR within 24 h after reperfusion, while 2 failed to function and required a second transplantation. It was suggested that a KBR in the normal range in donors is a prerequisite to immediate recovery of metabolic function of the liver graft after transplantation, and that hypotensive donors as a potential source of liver grafts may warrant further study.

Notes: Abstract The adsorption behaviors of bovine serum albumin (BSA) containing both dimeric and monomeric species onto polymer microspheres were examined using various homopolymers and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/polystyrene composite microspheres which were produced by the emulsifier-free (seeded) emulsion polymerization technique. The preferential adsorption of the BSA dimer was clearly observed in an optimum region of the surface hydrophilicities of the polymer microspheres. The preferential adsorption of the BSA dimer onto the composite polymer microspheres having heterogeneous surfaces consisting of hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts was more marked than those onto the homopolymer and copolymer microspheres having homogeneous surfaces.

Notes: Abstract We describe three patients with central areolar choroidal dystrophy whose electroretinograms (ERGs) and pattern visually evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) confirmed their macular dysfunction. Visual fields measured by Goldmann perimetry showed central relative scotomata corresponding to a dystrophic lesion. Dark adaptation curves were slightly abnormal either in the first curve or in the second curve, depending on the visual acuity. Color vision was disturbed irregularly. Fluorescein angiography revealed a loss of the choriocapillaries, and a hyperfluorescent border outlined the dystrophic lesion. Single-flash dark-adapted ERGs and scotopic ERGs were almost normal, while photopic and flicker ERGs showed slightly attenuated amplitudes. Conversely, VECPs to pattern reversal stimulation were greatly affected for both transient and steady-state stimuli. We conclude that, in central areolar choroidal dystrophy, pattern VECPs can provide more information on macular dysfunction than does the ERG.

Notes: Abstract Digital volume changes and blood flow have been measured with impedance and strain-gauge plethysmography as well as with laser Doppler flowmetry. A good agreement was found between the impedance and strain-gauge flow measurements with a correlation coefficient of 0·905. The laser Doppler method recorded minor changes in finger skin blood flow following changes in posture from 30 cm below heart level to 60 cm above heart level. This result can be explained as a consequence of the limited penetration depth of laser light into the skin or as a sign of autoregulation of skin blood flow. In these experiments the total blood flow to the finger underwent major changes.
