Notes: Measurements of the refractive index of thermally grown oxide after annealing reveal that the density relaxation of the oxide is well described by a stretched exponential decay function. The experiments of two-step oxidation show that oxygen diffusivity in the oxide exponentially decreases with the oxide density. The relation between the oxide density and the refractive index is well expressed by a simple power relation rather than the Lorenz–Lorenz formula.

Notes: We have studied the correlation length (Λ) of interface roughness in GaAs/AlAs quantum wells (QWs) prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). It is found that the mobility of two-dimensional electrons in very thin selectively doped GaAs/AlAs QW structures is substantially enhanced when the bottom AlAs barrier layer is prepared by alternate beam MBE and/or by the use of superlattice buffer layer below the QW. By measuring the electron concentration dependence of mobility and comparing with the theory of interface roughness scattering, we have found that Λ of the bottom (GaAs-on-AlAs) interface of the QW gets as large as 200–300 A(ring), when prepared by the modified growth technique, which is about three times as large as that (∼70 A(ring)) by conventional MBE.

Notes: Recovery of bowel function was investigated after cardiac surgery. The time to first passage of flatus was measured using a carbon dioxide analyser as an indication of the return of coordinated bowel motility in 22 adult patients who received high-dose fentanyl (56.3, SD 20.9 μg/kg) or morphine (1.3, SD 0.7 mg/kg) anaesthesia. The time from the patient's arrival in the intensive care unit to passage of the first flatus in patients who received fentanyl anaesthesia was significantly longer than in those who received morphine (p 〈 0.05). There was a significant relationship between the time to first flatus and the total dose of fentanyl, but no such relationship could be demonstrated for morphine. It is concluded that high-dose fentanyl anaesthesia delays recovery of bowel motility in a dose-dependent manner.

Notes: Summary The hypothalamic microdialysis of conscious rats was used to investigate the effects of immobilization stress (20 min) on extracellular noradrenaline(NA) levels. The stress significantly increased NA levels relative to basal efflux by 106% and this elevation continued for 40 min after release from stress.

Notes: Summary The afferent and efferent connections of the prelunate visual association area V4 of macaque monkeys were investigated by means of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. The specific thalamic afferents from the dorsolateral segment of the medial pulvinar and the lateral segment of the inferior pulvinar were topographically organized. A band of cells was labelled in the intralaminar nuclei (nucl. centr. med. and lat., reaching into LD and the most dorsal part of VL), and a few cells in the interlaminar layers of the lateral geniculate body. Other diencephalic afferents included the claustrum, the nucleus basalis Meynert and the pars compacta of the substantia nigra. Ipsilateral cortical areas which projected into V4 included area 18 (V2), the inferior parietal cortex, the anterior and posterior parts of the superior temporal sulcus, the frontal eye fields and the temporo-basal association cortex on the lateral half of the parahippocampal gyrus and around the occipito-temporal sulcus. In the contralateral cortex, discontinuous regions in areas V4 and V5 on the prelunate gyrus and some cells at the 17/18-border were labelled. All regions in which labelled cells were found and, in addition a restricted region in the dorsal cap of the head and the tail of the caudate nucleus showed fibre and terminal labelling. In addition mesencephalic afferents and efferents were identified but not investigated in detail. An attempt to estimate the quantitative contribution of the various afferent systems to the prelunate cortex was made by counting the labelled cells in the different areas. The afferent and efferent organization of the prelunate visual association area indicates that it is incorporated in a network of cortical and subcortical regions involved in various aspects of visual behavior.

Notes: Summary The localization of mitochondrial (m-) and cytosolic (c-) aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) was examined in the vestibular ganglion neurons and sensory cells in the vestibular end-organs of rats by an indirect immunohistochemical method using antibodies specific for m- and c-AAT. Neurons in the vestibular ganglion were stained by both m- and c-AAT antibodies, but the vestibular sensory cells exhibited only m-AAT-like immunoreactivity and were not labeled by c-AAT. These findings suggested that aspartate is a neurotransmitter in the hair cells of the vestibular end-organs.

Notes: Summary Renal scars are thought to be the end stage of chronic pyelonephritis and one of the most important causes of renal insufficiency and renal hypertension. The role of bacterial pili was examined in scar formation after an infection of newly constructed bacterial strains using the recombinant DNA technique, which possessed either mannose resistant (MR) or mannose sensitive (MS) pili of Serratia marcescens. Strains that differed in only a single virulence factor, namely, MR or MS pili, were used in a rat model of chronic pyelonephritis. In this model, MS-piliated bacteria stimulated renal scarring more severely than non-piliated or MR-piliated bacteria.

Notes: Abstract Effects of high-temperature ageing on the creep-rupture properties of cobalt-base L-605 alloys were investigated at 1089 and 1311 K in air. The specimens with serrated grain boundaries and those with normal straight grain boundaries were aged for 1080ksec at 1273 or 1323 K to cause the matrix precipitates of tungsten-rich b c c phase and M6C carbide. The creep-rupture strength of both specimens were improved by the high-temperature ageing. The rupture strength at 1311 K was the highest in the specimens with serrated grain boundaries aged at 1273 K, while the specimens with straight grain boundaries aged at 1273 K of the highest matrix hardness had the highest rupture strength at 1089 K. The high-temperature ageing did not decrease the rupture ductility of specimens. The ruptured specimens with serrated grain boundaries exhibited a ductile grain-boundary fracture surface which consisted of dimple patterns and steps, regardless of whether high-temperature ageing was carried out. The fracture mode of the specimens with straight grain boundaries was changed from the brittle grainboundary fracture to the ductile one similar to that of the specimens with serrated grain boundaries by high-temperature ageing, since large grain-boundary precipitates which gave nucleation sites of dimples were formed during the ageing. The grain-boundary cracks initiated in the early stage of creep (transient creep regime) in both non-aged and aged specimens of L-605 alloys in creep at 1089 and 1311 K, although the time to crack initiation is shorter in the specimens with straight grain boundaries than in those with serrated grain boundaries. Thus, the period of crack growth and linkage occupied most of the rupture life. The strengthening mechanisms of the aged specimens were also discussed.

Notes: Polyethylene and polystyrene composites filled with high-volume content of filler particles (quartz or Al2O3) were prepared by ordinary melt-casting method to effectively increase the thermal conductivity. The result, however, suggested that fractional void volume cssentially occupied by filler particles is left unfilled when high or super-high content of filler is used. After investigating the relation between the mixing ratio of different sized filler particles and the fractional voidage under various compression intensities, a mixture of filler was found to give minimum fractional voidage. Polymers filled with such an optimum mixture of fillers for minimum fractional voidage were then prepared under compression. Thus, expected monotonous increases in thermal conductivity in the wide range from low to super-high filler content were obtained. Further, it was confirmed that a predictive model proposed by us agreed quite satisfactorily with the experimental data in comparison with many other models.

Notes: Abstract We examined the effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) on cultured dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons obtained from 10-, 72-and 114-week-old mice by using a newly developed enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for neurofilament protein. Neurofilament protein levels estimated with EIA were demonstrated to depend on neurite length as well as on the neuronal number. Neurofilament protein levels increased with increasing NGF added, while surviving neuronal numbers were not affected by NGF. This indicates that NGF accelerated neurite elongation, but was not required for survival of adult DRG neurons. We also revealed that neurite-extending capacity dependent on NGF was reduced with aging, but a large amount of NGF significantly stimulated neurite extension even in 114-week old mice. Accordingly, diminished neurite regeneration after damage to neural tissue of aged animals may be related in part to a reduction of growth-inducing substances such as NGF possibly secreted by target cells as well as a reduction in the ability of neurons to synthesize or to assemble materials necessary for repair.
