Notizen: A low-duty pulsed PIG source has been developed for the injector (e/m= (1)/(7) – 1/4 ) of HIMAC. This source is of an indirectly heated PIG type. The requirement for this source is a high current with a low repetition rate and a low-duty factor. To obtain good stability during pulsed operation, the source is operated in a positive arc impedance range. Pulsed operation also allows the arc voltage to be high (1.4 kV), resulting in a high yield of multiply charged ions. With an arc pulse width of 500 μs (1 Hz and a duty of 0.05%), a useful beam pulse width of 200 μs with a peak intensity of 120 μA for Ar6+ has been obtained at an optimum gas pressure of 10−3 Torr. This intensity is higher than for cw mode by a factor of 5. A 90% emittance has also been measured to be 250π mm mrad in both the X and Y directions.

Notizen: Effectivness of the hybrid-weakness caused by a complementary interaction of two dominant genes Hwc1 and Hwc2 to suppress the spread of the red-grain gene into ordinary white-grained rice cultivars was investigated using the Monte Carlo computer simulation method. It was shown that the weakness genes, as far as being capable of reducing the fitness of the carrier by 80 percent or more, work quite effectively to suppress the genetic contamination of white-grained cultivars due to inflow of pollen from red-grained cultivars due to inflow of pollen from red-grain gene once the gene has been incorporated in to the population in the form of red-grained progeny produced as a result of the imperfect lethality of the initial hybrid between red-and white-grained cultivars. The weakness genes have little or no effect cultivars. The weakness genes have little or no effect either, when the contamination is initiated by an inflow of seeds or seedlings from ed-grained cultivars in these situations, removal (selection)of red grained plants Is the only countermeasure to exterminate the red-grain gene. The removal of red grained plants need not be intensive if carried out continuously. The spread of the red-grain gene after initial contamination is suppressed if the red-grain gene and weakness genes are linked. The suppressing effect of the linkage, however, is not substantial when the outcrossing rate is around or smaller than 0.01 as can be assumed in most rice cultivars.

Notizen: The nuclei of spindle and epithelioid cell nevus (SECN) cells often contain inclusions. To determine the origin and pathogene-sis of the nuclear inclusions, 12 cases of SECN were electron microscopically examined. True inclusions, pseudoinclusions, and electron-lucent areas were frequently found in the nuclei of SECN cells in all cases. The true inclusions were composed of various structures including vesicles and electron-dense homogenous substance. The pseudoinclusions were a cytoplasmic structure engulfed by nucleus; they were surrounded by a nuclear membrane and rich in cytoplasmic vesicles and electron-dense materials. Occasionally, a partial dissolution of the covering membrane of the pseudoinclusions was seen, leaving their contents in the nuclear matrix. It was concluded that a sequential process from the pseudoinclusions to the true inclusions in nuclei was morphologically present in SECN cells.

Notizen: Cholesterol sulphate (CS) has been suggested as an intercellular glue fur corneocyte-corneocyte cohesion from studies on patients with recessive X-linked ichthyosis (RXLI). Pathological stratum corneum of RXLI patients was found to show a significant elevation of CS. In the present study hair and nails, unaffected keratinzed tissues in RXLI patients, were examined for CS levels. The results demonstrated significantly elevated CS levels in both tissues in RXLI patients (P 〈 0.001). In particular the mean CS level in the hair of RXLI patients was five times greater than normal. The present study suggests that hair is a useful material for the diagnosis of RXLI.

Notizen: Summary Ultrastructural changes of the connective tissue sheath (CTS), including the hyaline membrane, of human hair follicles during the hair cycle, were studied in normal scalp skin specimens. In early anagen, the CTS was composed of a thin basal lamina and surrounding collagen tissue. The collagen tissue gradually thickened during the development of the hair and hair follicle. In mature anagen hair follicles, the collagen tissue was separated into three layers. The inner collagen layer, just outside the basal lamina, was thin and composed of collagen fibres running longitudinally parallel to the hair axis. The middle collagen layer was very thick with its collagen fibres running transversely against the hair axis and surrounding the inner hair tissue. Many fibroblasts were present among the collagen fibres in the middle layer, whereas the inner layer contained almost none. In the outer collagen layer, collagen fibres ran in various directions parallel to the outer surface of the outer root sheath cells. In late anagen, the basal lamina became very thick. In catagen, the basal lamine and the inner collagen layer became corrugated and showed oedematous change and degeneration. Surrounding fibroblasts showed active production of new collagen fibres, which seemed to fill the spaces left by the retraction of the hair follicle and hyaline membrane. These ultrastructural changes of the CTS show that there may be dynamic metabolic changes of the connective tissue around human hair follicles during the hair cycle.

Notizen: Summary To investigate biological characteristics of syringomas, three-dimensional (3-D) architectures of epithelial tumor nests and luminal structures of syringomas, hair follicles, and epidermal basement membrane in skin lesions were reconstructed using a computer stereographic analysis. Each lesion was composed of many spherical- to ovoid-shaped tumor nests, which interconnected with each other by narrow tumor strands, showing features of ginger roots or budding fungi. Small discrete tumor nests were often present in the peripheral areas of the lesions. Tumor nests developed around hair follicles and beneath epidermis, but they were never connected with hair follicles or epidermal basement membrane, although occasionally such structures were slightly bent by a pressure from the developing tumor nests. There was no relationship between tumor nests and normal sweat glands. Many tumor nests formed luminal structures; however, some small tumor nests did not. Most of the luminal structures were disconnectedly present. These findings suggest that in each lesion syringoma may occur in a single focus in the upper dermis without a relationship to the surrounding normal epithelial tissues, develop and partly swell forming lumina, and then the peripheral parts of the tumor may become discrete. The ratio of [lumen volume/ tumor nest volume] measured by computer stereometry was 0.275±0.037 (n=5); this indicates a constant ability to form luminal structures by syringoma cells.

Notizen: Summary A follow-up study by CT and MRI in 3 cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) was performed. Neurologically dementia, forced laughing, tetraplegia and parkinsonism were observed as sequelae. In the CT and MR scans about 3 years after the onset of JE, low-density areas (LDAs) or abnormal signal intensities had remained in the thalamus and basal ganglia. The abnormalities were also found in the brain stem. When the main lesions shown by CT and MRI were compared with those of the acute stage, T2-weighted MRI clearly revealed multiple small areas with high signal intensities, although those in the acute stage had shown diffuse abnormal signals. These findings may be useful in helping to identify JE a long time after the onset.

Notizen: Summary Separation and determination of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium in monazites have been achieved by dynamic ion-exchange chromatography. The ore samples are decomposed by sulfuric acid and the rare earths are separated in a group as oxalates. The rare earth elements are then separated from each other on a column of bonded phase silica by gradient elution with 0.05 to 0.5 M lactic acid (pH 3.5) in the presence of 0.01 M sodium 1-octanesulfonate. Post-column reaction with Arsenazo III is used for detection and quantification of the individual rare earth elements. Results are quoted for lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium in monazites. Detection limit is 1 μg ml−1 with a S/N ratio of 3. The separation is complete within 27 min valley to valley resolution. Precision of better than 1% can usually be obtained.
