Notes: Abstract A new transmitting pattern, a buried non-symmetrical electric dipole in a conducting half space, is treated theoretically. A simple formula for the stationary current field of this pattern is derived from the Laplace equation and it is confirmed by the laboratory experiments and a well site experiment. This formula gives the upper limit of the electrical signal strength at the surface, transmitted from the bottom of a drill string.

Notes: Summary Plasma and urine concentrations of codeine and its measurable metabolites were determined by HPLC in six healthy subjects after a single 30 mg oral dose of codeine either alone or after 7 doses of 1 g paracetamol 8 hourly. After codeine alone, the t1/2 (h), AUC (μmol·l−1·h) and CLR (ml·min−1) for codeine were 2.2, 0.81, and 252 respectively. These were not significantly altered by paracetamol: 2.2, 0.84, and 291 respectively. For codeine-6-glucuronide the values were 2.4, 22.0, and 29.7 respectively. These were not significantly different from those after codeine plus paracetamol: 2.4, 21.9, and 39.6. There were no significant differences between the two treatments in the apparent partial clearances (ml·min−1) of codeine to morphine (88 codeine alone, 70 codeine plus paracetamol), to norcodeine (71 codeine alone, 88 codeine plus paracetamol), and to codeine-6-glucoronide (820 codeine alone, 1022 codeine plus paracetamol). The urinary excretion of codeine-6-glucuronide, morphine, norcodeine, and codeine were not significantly different between the two treatments.

Notes: The influence of the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) on oxidation of milk fat under various conditions was monitored by fatty acid analysis and oxygen consumption at 50°C. The rate of copper-catalyzed oxidation of cream containing the membrane was faster than when the membrane was removed. In the dry state, the isolated MFGM, membrane lipids (ML) and the nonlipid membrane solids (NLMS) inhibited oxidation at 50°C and 95°C. In the presence of water, however, all membrane components enhanced oxidation at 50°C. The balance between the accelerating effects of membrane components and the inhibiting influence of other factors appeared to depend on processing conditions.

Notes: At a concentration of 0.4 μg purified pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP)/ml, the formation of local lesions on tobacco leaves caused by tobacco mosaic virus infection was completely inhibited and at 25 ng PAP/ ml. 68% inhibition was still obtained. PAP protected plants from infection by viruses from seven virus groups-five RNA viruses: tobacco mosaic virus, cucumber mosaic virus, alfalfa mosaic virus, potato virus X and potato virus Y; and two DNA viruses: African cassava mosaic virus (ssDNA) and cauliflower mosaic virus (dsDNA). Virus infection was probably blocked by PAP at a very early stage. PAP infiltrated into the intercellular spaces through the lower surfaces of leaves inhibited infection by virus inoculated on the upper leaf surface, and partially prevented PVY transmission by aphids. However. PAP did not show any activity against two bacterial and six fungal pathogens.

Notes: We investigate the optical properties of new "superlattice particles'' that can be made of precisely controlled metal-insulator layers fabricated by sputtering or evaporation techniques. We found that there are two limits to the reflectivity behavior corresponding to wide and narrow particles. In the narrow-particle limit, a series of sharply defined absorption peaks at frequencies controlled by the width is observed. In the wide-particle limit, most of the light incident on the particles will be absorbed. Materials of this type possess desirable infrared absorption characteristics and can be used for new polarization sensitive infrared absorbers and detectors.

Notes: Abstract A clone of highly repetitive DNA, designated C5, was isolated from DNA of female Chinese muntjac cells. The nucleotide sequence of this clone is 80%–85% homologous to that of the satellite IA clone and other highly repetitive DNA clones previously obtained from the Indian muntjac. Using C5 as a probe for in situ hybridizations to chromosome preparations of cells of both the Chinese and Indian muntjacs, we were able to show that these repeated sequences occur in centromeric heterochromatin of the chromosomes of both Chinese and indian muntjac species. More significantly, non-random clusters of hybridization signals were detected on the arms of chromosomes of the Indian muntjac. These latter hybridization sites are postulated to be regions of interstitial heterochromatin and could be the remnants of centromeric heterochromatin from ancestral Chinese muntjac chromosomes. Our observations provide new supportive evidence for the tandem chromosome fusion theory that has been proposed for the evolution of the Indian muntjac karyotype.

Notes: Abstract A novel photothermal technique is developed, which enables the simultaneous measurement of the thermal diffusivity α, thermal conductivity κ, and the specific heat C of a sample. The technique is based on frequency-modulated time-delay photopyroelectric spectrometry (FM-TDPS), which consists of chirped laser excitation of the sample and detection of the thermal impulse response by a thin-film pyroelectric detector. No calibration is required for the measurements; absolute values for α, κ, and C may be obtained without having to employ a reference sample. Results on superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x are reported for the temperature range 50–300 K; the values obtained compare favorably with reported measurements of α, κ, and C for YBa2Cu3O7−x , which previously required separate experiments for their determination.

Notes: Abstract Phytolacca anti-viral protein (PAP) was purified from Phytolacca leaves and the N-terminal was sequenced. A cDNA library was made from mRNAs isolated from Phytolacca leaves and cDNA clones for PAP were identified using oligonucleotide probes derived from the N-terminal amino acid sequence. The PAP-cDNA clone was sequenced from both directions. The predicted amino acid sequence of PAP was compared with the amino acid sequences of other ribosome-inactivating proteins. The identities of these proteins to PAP ranged from 29 to 38%, and a region was found in each with a sequence similar to the PAP sequence (AIQMVSEAARFKYI). Southern blot analysis indicates that PAP is encoded by a multi-gene family.

Notes: A direct boundary element method for the iterative analysis of the lowered groundwater level and the steady-state airflow in porous soil for tunnels driven under compressed air is presented. The soil may be zoned and anisotropic. It is shown that disregard of the compressibility of the air leads to results for the excess air pressure and the flow of air through the surface of the soil, which are on the unsafe side. The lowered groundwater level is determined by means of an iterative procedure. During the iteration large changes of the shapes of boundary elements may occur. In order to reduce the resulting danger of divergence of the iteration, the boundary element mesh is adapted suitably in the course of the iteration process.
