Notes: The GaP(001) surface treated by H2S has been studied using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We, for the first time, find the new surface structure, S/GaP(001)-(1×2), obtained by H2S treatment at 450 °C. The coverage of sulfur is estimated to be half monolayer by AES measurement. XPS results indicate that only Ga—S bonds are formed on the surface.

Notes: A large semicylindrical negative ion source, whose dimensions are 34 cm in diameter and 104 cm in length, has been developed. By optimizing a chamber depth and a filter strength, a H− current of 650 mA (7.7 mA/cm2) was obtained at an arc condition of 1.3 Pa, 70 V, and 1200 A. In order to increase the H− current and to reduce an operating pressure, a small amount of Cs was injected. As a result, the H− current was increased from 550 mA (6.5 mA/cm2) to 850 mA (10 mA/cm2) under an arc power of 70 V×800 A. The most significant feature of the cesium effect was the reduction of the operating pressure. With maintaining the sufficient current of 670 mA (8 mA/cm2), the operating pressure could be lowered to 0.03 Pa. At this pressure, the highest gas efficiency of 20% was achieved.

Notes: It is demonstrated that a cesium-seeded volume H− ion source can be operated very stably for long pulse durations of up to 24 h. The source consists of a 20 cm cylindrical multicusp plasma generator and a 9 cm × 10 cm multiaperture extractor. By seeding a small amount of cesium, the source has produced 50 keV, 0.5 A, 1000 s H− ion beams with a current density of 14 mA/cm2. The cesium effect lasted for more than 24 h once 100 mg cesium was seeded before operation. Power flow measurement revealed that the heat loading of the ion source was low enough to operate the source in the dc mode.

Notes: The combined utilization of directly characterized off-plane circularly polarized synchrotron radiation and an ultrahigh-vacuum compatible superconducting magnet has enabled magnetic-circular-dichroism (MCD) experiments, mainly at the M2,3 core absorption edges. Details concerning the experimental technique, which allowed quantitative MCD measurements, are described. The results are presented and discussed for single crystals of Ni, Fe, and Fe3O4, and an Fe/Pt multilayer.

Notes: Summary In a previous report on a 16-year-old Japanese girl with type A insulin resistance, we found that one allele of the insulin receptor gene was inherited from her mother and contained a 1.2 kilobase pair deletion which removed the 14th exon in the β subunit. We extended investigation of the proband and found the deletion between two Alu sequences. To determine the effect of the deletion on the level of transcription and the splicing pattern of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), we synthesized the complimentary DNA and used the polymerase chain reaction to amplify the region which included the deleted area. The deletion shifted the reading frame, resulting in a termination codon after amino acid 867 (Glu), thereby producing a truncated insulin receptor without a transmembrane region and cytoplasmic domain. We also sequenced each of 22 exons of the insulin receptor gene but found no mutation in exons of the insulin receptor gene, except for deletion of exon 14 of the maternal allele. Thus, the proband is a heterozygote for a single mutant allele. Abnormal mRNA transcribed from the mutant allele resulted in a decrease in insulin binding.

Notes: Summary Immunohistochemical distributions of carbohydrate antigens based on the type 2 chain in normal as well as fetal and neoplastic tissues of human gastrointestinal tract were investigated with a monoclonal antibody (MAb) H11 (specific for type 2 chain) alone and in combination with the two MAbs MSG15 (for α2→6 sialylated type 2 chain) and IB9 (for the α2→6 sialylated type 2 chain and glycoproteins having NeuAcα2→6GalNAc), and 188C1 (for short- and long-chain Lex antigens) and FH2 (for the long-chain Lex antigen). In the pyloric mucosa of secretors, the type 2 chain is oncodevelopmentally expressed, but in non-secretors it is detected in surface mucous cells of normal gastric mucosa. The α2→6 sialylation, which is confined to endocrine cells of normal pyloric mucosa, occurs in fetal and carcinoma tissues. Irrespective of the secretor status, the short- and the long-chain Lex antigens can be detected in mature and immature glandular mucous cells of normal gastric mucosa, respectively; both antigens are also expressed in fetal and carcinoma tissues. In the colon, the type 2 chain and its α2→6 sialylated counterpart are expressed in an oncodevelopmental manner. The short- and the long-chain Lex antigens are significantly enhanced in colonic carcinoma. The glycoproteins with NeuAcα2→6GalNAc residues appear in gastric and colonic carcinoma as well as intestinalized gastric mucosa and transitional mucosa. Thus, some of these antigens were distinctively expressed in certain epithelial cells lining the normal gastrointestinal tract depending on maturation and patients' secretor status, and some were oncodevelopmental or carcinoma-associated antigens of the human gastrointestinal tract.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between the interphase consisting of physisorbed and chemisorbed silane on glass fibres and the resultant composite Mode I delamination fracture toughness in glass fibre fabric laminate, was studied. The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of the laminate specimen was obtained by using a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen. The delamination resistance of the laminate specimen finished with two silane concentrations and washed in methanol solvent, is discussed on the basis of the interlaminar fracture toughness. In order to determine the amount of physisorbed and chemisorbed silane on the glass fibre, the amount of total carbon was determined using an analysis instrument. The physisorbed silane migrated into the resin matrix and influenced the mechanical properties and interlaminar fracture of the laminate specimen. The amount of unsaturated polyester resin blended with a silane coupling agent was measured using dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, and a DCB specimen for mechanical properties and fracture toughness.

Notes: Abstract A personal computer system for electrocardiogram (ECG) ST-segment recognition is developed based on neural networks. The system consists of a preprocessor, neural networks and a recogniser. The adaptive resonance theory (ART) is employed to implement the neural networks in the system, which self-organise in response to the input ECG. Competitive and co-operative interaction among neurons in the neural networks makes the system robust to noise. The preprocessor detects the R points and divides the ECG into cardiac cycles. Each cardiac cycle is fed into the neural networks. The neural networks then address the approximate locations of the J point and the onset of the T-wave (Ton). The recogniser determines the respective ranges in which the J and Ton points lie, based on the locations addressed. Within those ranges, the recogniser finds the exact locations of the J and Ton points either by a change in the sign of the slope of the ECG, a zero slope or a significant change in the slope. The ST-segment is thus recognised as the portion of the ECG between the J and Ton points. Finally, the appropriateness of the length of the ST-segment is evaluated by an evaluation rule. As the process goes on, the neural networks self-organise and learn the characteristics of the ECG patterns which vary with each patient. The experiment indicates that the system recognises ST-segments with an average of 95·7 per cent accuracy within a 15 ms error and with an average of 90·8 per cent accuracy within a 10 ms error, and that characteristics of the ECG patterns are stored in the long term memory of the neural networks.
