    Notes: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon has been prepared at a plasma excitation frequency in the very-high-frequency band at 70 MHz with the glow discharge technique at substrate temperatures between 280 and 50 °C. The structural properties have been studied using hydrogen evolution, elastic recoil detection analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The films were further characterized by dark and photoconductivity and by photothermal deflection spectroscopy. With respect to films prepared at the conventional frequency of 13.56 MHz considerable differences concerning the electronic and structural properties are observed as the substrate temperature is decreased from 280 to 50 °C. Down to a substrate temperature of 150 °C the electronic film properties change only a little and the total hydrogen content cH and the degree of microstructure that can be directly correlated to cH increase only moderately. Below 150 °C the electronic properties deteriorate in the usual manner but still the total hydrogen content does not exceed 21 at. % even at a substrate temperature of 50 °C. It is argued that the influence of the higher excitation frequency on the plasma and on the growth kinetics plays a key role in this context by allowing a highly effective dissociation of the process gas with the maximum ion energies remaining at low levels. It is concluded that deposition processes at higher excitation frequencies can have important technological implications by allowing a decrease of the deposition temperature without losses in the material quality.

    Notes: Layers of InP:Tm, GaAs:Tm, GaP:Tm, and GaInP:Tm have been grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy at atmospheric pressure using tris(isopropylcyclopentadienyl)thulium as a liquid Tm source. Electrical measurements revealed no characteristic influence of Tm on the electrical properties of the semiconductor host. Tm3+-related 4f emissions at 1.2 and 1.9 μm are observed both in GaAs and GaInP. In GaAs, the Tm3+ 4f luminescence at 1.2 μm consists of a series of very sharp lines. In GaInP samples, the Tm3+-related luminescence at 1.2 μm is much stronger than in the GaAs samples and is still observable at room temperature.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this work was to analyze clinical symptoms in light of anorectal manometry results. We compared the frequency of clinical symptoms in relation with the presence or absence of functional anomalies. Using this methodology, the following relationships may be suggested: the need to wear a pad, with a decreased resting pressure at the upper part of the anal canal; the inability to delay rectal evacuation, with decreased anal voluntary contraction; interference of incontinence with social activities, with decreased duration of anal voluntary contraction; urinary symptoms, with an increased threshold volume of rectal distention needed to elicit the rectoanal inhibitory reflex; and complete rectal prolapse, with reduced length of the anal canal.

    Notes: Abstract The study of metabolic fuel provision and its regulation has reached an exciting stage where specific molecular events can be correlated with parameters of the organism's ecology. This paper examines substrate supply pathways from storage sites to locomotory muscle mitochondria and discusses ecological implications of the limits for maximal flux through these pathways. The relative importance of the different oxidative fuels is shown to depend on aerobic capacity. Very aerobic, endurance-adapted animals such as long distance migrants favor the use of lipids and intramuscular fuels over carbohydrates and circulatory fuels. The hypothesis of functional co-adaptation between oxygen and metabolic fuel supply systems allows us to predict that the capacity of several biochemical processes should be scaled with maximal oxygen consumption. Key enzymes, transmembrane transporter proteins, glucose precursor supply and soluble fatty acid transport proteins must all be geared to support higher maximal glucose and fatty acid fluxes in aerobic than in sedentary species.

    Notes: Summary Intracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy was performed in 36 patients with problematic common bile duct stones. All of the patients had undergone unsuccessful mechanical lithotripsy prior to this procedure. In 29 patients (80.6%), the stones were fragmented under cholangioscopic control and subsequently extracted with a Dormia basket. In seven patients, the procedure failed due to stone impaction or failure to intubate the common bile duct with a nasobiliary tube. No complications were observed. Cholangioscopically guided intracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy is a highly effective and safe procedure for the conservative treatment of complicated common bile duct stones.

    Notes: Abstract We report the growth of siloxene on crystalline silicon (111) surfaces based on the chemical transformation of a calcium disilicide layer. The siloxene films obtained show a prominent luminescence in the green, with intensities comparable to the luminescence observed from porous silicon. The structural properties of the siloxene films are studied with infrared transmission and TEM micrographs.

    Notes: Abstract From July 1989 to June 1991 135 discs on 129 patients were treated, in about twothirds at level L4/5 and at the remaining one third L5/S1.15% (n = 2) failed technically. Sixty eight patients are in the 1-year follow-up. Average age was 41 years (range 16–68 years). Average pain duration was 12 months, and average aspiration time was 25.8 min (range 15–45 min). All patients had contained disc lesions, suffered from radicular symptoms and had not responded to conservative treatment. 67,1% (group A, n =45) had a failure rate of 17,8%. Patients with associated degenerations (group B, n = 7) had a failure rate of 35,3%. 80% of the patients with recurrent radicular symptoms (group C, interval patients, n = 6) were free of symptoms. Re herniation rate in all patients was 2.9%, and the laminectomy rate 4.4%. No major complications were noted. Treated disc level, patient aage, aspirated nucleus material and CT changes revealed no correlation to clinical success. Patients with associated degenerations (group B) as wellas those with longer pain duration and larger contained disc lesions had a significantly worse outcome.

    Notes: Summary A transganglionic transport technique was used to study the synaptic connections of the central carotid sinus afferents in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius of the rat by electron microscopy. The caudal part of the nucleus was profusely innervated. Labelled fibres extended to the contralateral nucleus, and to the ipsilateral dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, nucleus ambiguus, spinal nucleus of the trigeminal nerve and the area postrema. The labelled terminals were densely packed with clear, predominantly spherical vesicles about 50 nm in diameter and a few often swollen mitochondria. The terminals synapsed on dendrites of various calibres, spindle- or pear-shaped somal profiles with short axes lesser than 8 μm, and axon terminals. In axo-axonal synapses, most labelled terminals appeared to be presynaptic. Frequently, profiles of labelled terminals were in direct apposition with one another. The latter may represent the morphological substrate of the interaction between baro- and chemoreceptor inputs in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius and warrants further study. The present results indicate that in addition to direct inputs, the carotid sinus afferents are able to influence second-order neurons in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius indirectly through presynaptic modulation.
