Notes: Summary In the outermost layer of porcine-developing enamel adjacent to the ameloblasts in the secretory stage, the activities of two proteinases having molecular masses of 76 and 78kDa were detected by enzymography using gelatin as a substrate. On the other hand, high activities of known 30 and 34kDa proteinases were localized in the inner layer of the enamel. The 76kDa proteinase cleaved the carboxylterminal peptide of porcine 25kDa amelogenin to convert it to 20kDa amelogenin. The 78kDa proteinase also acted on the 25kDa amelogenin similarly, but its activity was weak. The results indicate that the 25kDa amelogenin synthesized and secreted by ameloblasts is converted to 20kDa amelogenin by the action of proteinase localized in the outermost layer of the secretory enamel, and then further degraded by the proteinases in the inner layer of the enamel associated with the increase of mineralization.

Notes: Abstract Material transport through the shelf edge to the deep ocean determines the fate of particulate matter generated in productive coastal seas. In stratified estuaries, onshore flow in the bottom layer generally keeps particulate matter generated in the upper layer and settled down to the bottom layer within the estuaries. AT the shelf edge of Tokyo Bay under the condition of average onshore flow in the bottom layer, we observed higher vertical sediment flux during ebb than flood tidal currents. The on-shelf and off-shelf differences in turbulent mixing and water depth mainly cause such difference in sediment flux. We propose to call this export process of particulate matter “the tidal pump” at the shelf edge.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of226Ra and238U in various soils has been studied. Supposing that radioactive equilibrium were in existence, the average activities of226Ra and238U would show a nearly 1∶1 correlation. As weathering affects radioactive equilibrium in surface soil, radioactive equilibrium was not in existence. Therefore, four kinds of soil were selected from different weathering conditions, viz. river bed soil, paddy field soil, field soil and uncropped soil. The226Ra/238U ratio of various soils lies in the range of 1.63 to 2.41. The activity concentrations of226Ra were greater than238U in various soils. The ratio226Ra/238U can be shown to be a quantitative index of weathering. Phosphatic manure contains238U and its daughter isotopes in concentrations far exceeding the average abundance in the earth's crust. But the cultivated soils (paddy field soil, field soil) are not affected by fertilizers in Kamisaibara.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Potosiit and Incait wurden in Erzen der Hoei-Mine, Oita Präfektur, Japan, nachgewiesen.
Notes: Summary Potosiite and incaite have been found at the Hoei mine, Oita Prefecture, Japan. Potosiite occurs as tabular crystals (3 cm x 2 cm in size), and is associated with arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, stannite, jamesonite and pyrite, whereas incaite occurs as polycrystalline aggregates rimming galena or as hair-like masses in a matrix of kutnahorite. X-ray powder data reveal that these minerals are potosiite and incaite, respectively. Electron-microprobe analyses of potosiite and incaite gave the general formula (Pb, Sn)2+ 6+xFeSb2Sn4+ 2S14+x, with x 〈 2. Potosiite is homogeneous, whereas incaite, in contact with galena, is quite heterogeneous. Reflectance data for potosiite show that its bireflectance is one of the lowest among opaque minerals with a sheet-like structure.
