Notes: Summary We evaluated a 35-year-old diabetic male patient with type A insulin resistance, showing acanthosis nigricans. Insulin binding to the patient's Epstein-Barr-virus transformed lymphocytes was mildly reduced. The maximal insulin-stimulated autophosphorylation of the insulin receptor from the patient's transformed lymphocytes was decreased to 45% of that from the control subjects. On examination, the biological activities of insulin and insulin-like growth factor I in the patient's cultured fibroblasts, insulin sensitivity of amino isobutyric acid uptake and thymidine incorporation was decreased, but insulin-like growth factor I action was normal. The sequence analysis of amplified genomic DNA revealed that the patient was heterozygous for a mutation substituting Leu for Trp at codon 1193 in exon 20 of the insulin receptor gene. The patient's mother and sister were also heterozygous for a mutation in the insulin receptor gene that substituted Leu for Trp1193 in the Β subunit of the receptor. Therefore, the mutation causes insulin resistance in a dominant fashion. They were less hyperglycaemic and more hyperinsulinaemic than the proband after glucose loading. The mother had diabetes mellitus but did not show acanthosis nigricans, while the sister did not have diabetes and showed acanthosis nigricans. These results suggest that this mutation causes defective tyrosine kinase activity of the insulin receptor, which results in insulin resistance. Insulin action and phenotypic appearance may be mediated by different factors.

Notes: Co/Pd multilayered films exhibit large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and have attracted attention as new materials for recording media and for other applications. The coercivity (Hc), however, is small in as-sputtered films. We have found that Hc increased markedly with the atmospheric annealing at 300 °C to 2 kOe, and studied the change in film structure and reason of the increase in Hc with the annealing. The rf magnetron sputtering method was employed in fabricating the films. Film structure changes were observed by x-ray diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectrography, and atomic force microscopy. The increase in Hc was observed only in the atmospheric annealing, and not in the vacuum-annealing. The internal structure of films after the atmospheric annealing at 300 °C consisted of columnar parts that had the multilayered structure that undertook vertical magnetization and column boundaries being surrounded by Co oxides. As a consequence, domain wall binding occurs in the segregated areas of the oxides in the column boundaries, thereby increasing Hc.

Notes: The heavy-hole and light-hole excitons of a CdTe epilayer, pseudomorphically grown on an InSb epilayer by molecular beam epitaxy, are studied with a diamond anvil cell as a function of applied hydrostatic pressure via photoluminescence (PL) and photomodulated reflectivity (PR) spectroscopies. They are compared with the excitonic features in the simultaneously measured PL spectra of a sample of bulk CdTe. Under applied pressure, the lattice mismatch-induced splitting between the light-hole and heavy-hole related transitions increases in a continuous and reversible manner because of the additional pressure-induced compression due to the difference in the compressibilities of CdTe and InSb. The unusually large strain sustained by the CdTe epilayer under pressure is discussed in the light of various models. The PR signal vanishes after the InSb epilayer goes through a structural phase transition at approximately 20 kbar, while the PL signal persists until it is irreversibly quenched by the CdTe epilayer undergoing a structural phase transition at approximately 30 kbar. For pressures between 20 and 30 kbar, the behavior of the CdTe epilayer is similar to that of the bulk sample; the strain appears to have been relaxed due to the structural phase transition which has taken place in InSb. Values of the first- and second-order pressure coefficients for bulk CdTe and for the CdTe epilayer as well as values of the hydrostatic and shear deformation potentials are obtained at 14 and 80 K and compared with previously quoted values.

Notes: Abstract Bovine lactoferrin was evaluated for its ability to enhance resistance of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), to infection with Vibrio anguillarum. Oral administration of lactoferrin (100 mg kg−1) to fish daily for 3 days prior to an intraperitoneal challenge with V. anguillarum resulted in increased survival rates, and enhanced resistance against Streptococcus sp., although to a lesser extent. In lactoferrin-treated fish, an increase in phagocytic and chemiluminescent (CL) activities of pronephros cells against V. anguillarum was observed. The phagocytic and CL activities of cells against Streptococcus sp. were also significantly increased. However, no in vitro bactericidal activities of lactoferrin against V. anguillarum or Streptococcus sp. were observed. This suggests that the lactoferrin enhanced the resistance of the rainbow trout against bacterial infection through the activation of phagocytes.

Notes: This study reports the construction and working of a sintered diamond anvil high-pressure cell for performing electrical resistance measurements using a four-probe method at cryogenic temperatures. The apparatus has been designed to minimize the pressure shift during the cooling cycle from room temperature to 1.2 K. Pressure is calibrated using the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of Bi to 50 GPa. The usefulness of the apparatus is demonstrated by electrical resistance and Tc measurements on Se and Zr up to 60 GPa.

Notes: The successful p-doping of ZnSe and Zn(S,Se) using a nitrogen plasma source during growth by molecular beam epitaxy has been an important factor leading to the recent realization of blue-green diode lasers and light-emitting diodes. This letter reports the results of the nitrogen doping of ZnTe using similar techniques. Doping levels approaching the 1019 cm−3 range are reported along with electrical, optical, and microstructural characterization. Highly doped ZnTe provides an opportunity for forming an ohmic contact to p-ZnSe.

Notes: Effects of air annealing on magnetic properties and structures of multilayered Co/Pt and Co/Pd sputtering films were studied. The dual-source rf magnetron sputtering method was employed in fabricating the films. The thicknesses of the Co layer and Pt layer of the Co/Pt films were 4.3 and 10.0 A(ring), respectively: the total thickness was 4300 A(ring). The thicknesses of Co layer and Pd layer of the Co/Pd films were 3.6 and 11.8 A(ring), respectively: the total thickness was 5600 A(ring). Residual magnetizations and coercivities of the Co/Pt and Co/Pd films increased with air-annealing at 250–350 °C for 30 min to 2.5–3 kG and 2–3 kOe, respectively. The increases were observed only during air annealing, but not in vacuum annealing. Saturated magnetizations and intensities of the superlattice x-ray peak decreased uniformly relative to annealing temperature.

Notes: The effect of antiallergic agents (DSCG (disodium cromoglycate), ketotifen, and ibudilast) and beclomethasone dipropionate inhaler (BDI) on bronchial hyperresponsiveness to histamine inhalation was retrospectively assessed in 72 asthmatic patients with more than a year's duration of the disease. Decrease in bronchial hyperresponsiveness to histamine was observed in 10 out of the 33 (30%) antiallergic-agents-treated patients (group A, mean duration = 7.8 months), in 12 of 19 (63.2%) BDI-treated patients (group B, 6.2 months), but only 2 of the 20 (10%) control patients (group C, 7.8 months). Improvement of histamine PC20 was from 310 to 597 μg/ml (P〈0.01) in group A, from 308 to 1622 μg/ml (P〈0.0005) in group B, and from 575 to 525 μg/ml (NS) in group C. A significant decrease in the peripheral eosinophil count was observed only in group B. The improvement in bronchial hyperresponsiveness was parallel with that of asthmatic symptoms; the percentage of patients becoming symptom-free rose from 12 to 42%, 5 to 89%, and 5 to 20% in groups A, B, and C, respectively. Out of 11 unimproved patients in group A, 7 showed a significant improvement in their histamine PC20 by BDI treatment (mean PC20: 311 → 1828 μg/ml). These results suggest that BDI might be more effective than antiallergic agents in the treatment of patients with long-standing bronchial asthma.
