    Notes: The polarization properties of edge-emitted electroluminescence from InGaAs/InP quantum wires fabricated by reverse-mesa wet etching, electron-beam lithography, and overgrowth, are investigated. Strongly TE polarized electroluminescence from relatively wide wires approaches isotropy as the wires become narrower. The observed dependence on wire size is attributed to a transition from a two-dimensional to a one-dimensional system. The implication is that quantum wires could potentially be applied to polarization-controlled devices, such as polarization insensitive optical amplifiers.

    Notes: Summary The retention and selectivity of flavonoids (baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, oroxylin A) inScutellariae radix have been studies by high-performance thin-layer chromatography on phenyldimethylethoxysilane-treated silica plates. The silica plates treated with phenyl groups were used for physical and chemical analysis. From elemental carbon analysis, the maximum number of bonded phenyl surface groups per gram was calculated to be 0.467×1021 (Oginal silica plate: Merck Art. 15109, Silica gel 100 F254). With methanol-1/15 M phosphate buffer (pH 6.2) mixtures as mobile phase, baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, and oroxylin A inScutellariae radix were separated. It has been shown that phenyl-treated plates are more suitable for selective separation of baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, and oroxylin A than octadecyl-treated plates.

    Notes: Abstract A Major barrier to the management of hypertension is the extent to which patients comply with the treatment regimen. Herein we report the findings of a retrospective analysis designed to discern the relationship between antihypertensive formulation, regimen compliance and the utilization of health care services. Data for this analysis were derived from the state of South Carolina's Medicaid computer archive. The study population consisted of 1 000 randomly selected beneficiaries initially prescribed one of the following antihypertensive regimens as monotheraphy: atenolol (daily); captopril (twice daily); oral clonidine (twice daily); transdermal clonidine (once a week); diltiazem (twice daily); enalapril (twice daily); metoprolol (twice daily); prazosin (twice daily); terazosin (daily); and verapamil-SR (daily). Multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the incremental influence of selected demographic characteristics, utilization of medical services prior to diagnosis for hypertension, initial antihypertensive medication, medication possession ratio for antihypertensive therapy, and the number of maintenance medications for disease state processes other than hypertension on post-period health care expenditure. Results indicate that patients initially prescribed antihypertensive medication requiring daily or weekly administration experience infrequent changes in their therapeutic regimen, far less use of concomitant therapy for blood pressure control, an increased utilization of antihypertensive medication, and a decrease in the use and cost of physician, hospital and laboratory services.

    Notes: Summary The effectiveness of 3-glycidoxypropyl-treated thin layer chromatographic plates in the determination of midazolam intoxication has been studied by thin layer chromatography/fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. Silica plates treated with 3-glycidoxypropyldimethylethoxysilane were used for the measurement of their physical composition and for chemical analysis. From elemental carbon analysis data, the maximum number of bonded 3-glycidoxypropyl surface groups per gram was calculated to be 0.417×1021. Midazolam in human serum from patients suffering from intoxication could be separated on a 3-glycidoxypropyl-treated thin layer chromatographic plate with chloroform as eluent. After applying the technique of diffused spot condensation on the 3-glycidoxypropyl-treated thin layer chromatographic plate, the established thin layer chromatography/fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry method was used for the identification of midazolam intoxication, and improved the detection limit for midazolam in the serum of an intoxication patient by 30 times.
