Notes: Summary A case of double superior vena cava lacking the left brachiocephalic vein was found. The left superior vena cava directly continued to the accessory hemiazygos vein without anastomosis with the coronary sinus. Therefore, the blood from the left superior vena cava drained into the right superior vena cava via the transverse anastomosis between the left and right azygos lines. It was thought that embryologically 1) the inter-precardinal vein was not formed, and 2) the left precardinal vein did not continue to the common cardinal vein, rather it drained into the left azygos line. This case may represent one of the most basic arrangements of the superior caval system.

Notes: Recently a heat-proof magnetic domain refining technique has been developed which is characterized by the introduction of grooves on a surface of steel sheet after final cold rolling. In this paper, magnetic properties and the domain refining effect of grooving are investigated. A grooving process is constituted by resist printing on the surface of steel sheets after final cold rolling and succeeding electrolytic etching. The grooves were introduced almost perpendicular to the rolling direction of steel sheets. The width and depth of each grove are about 200 and 20 μm, respectively. With this newly developed method, about 10% reduction in iron loss was achieved and less than 0.34 W/lb at 1.5 T, 60 Hz was obtained. Using this new material, the iron loss of wound core transformers can be reduced by about 10% as compared with nongrooved material. Domain width was dramatically reduced by grooving, which caused the reduction of eddy current loss. This reduction is considered to be caused by the demagnetizing field effect due to free poles in the vicinity of grooves. It was clarified that in grooved sheets the magnetization on the ungrooved surfaces proceeded faster than on the grooved surfaces and therefore, hysteresis loss and magnetizing characteristics did not deteriorate by grooving.

Notes: The effects of the substrate temperature on the composition and microstructure of Bi-Sb-Te-Se thin films are discussed and related to the Seebeck coefficient and resistivity. The films were prepared on silica substrates by argon ion beam sputtering. The effect of subsequent heat treatment is also discussed. The composition becomes stoichiometric at the substrate temperature around 500 K at which the Seebeck coefficient has a maximum and the resistivity has a minimum. The Seebeck coefficient changes its sign at the substrate temperature around 340 K. The crystal structure of the films deposited at room temperature is identified as the rock-salt type, and the change of the thermoelectric properties as a function of the substrate temperature can be mainly attributed to the volume fraction of the Bi2Te3 and rock-salt structures. The subsequent heat treatment is effective in improving the power factor of the stoichiometric thin films.

Notes: The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity and the discrete dynamo in high-aitch-theta reversed-field pinch (RFP) discharges are studied through comparisons with those in normal-aitch-theta RFP discharges, where aitch-theta=Bθ(a)/〈Bz〉 is the pinch parameter. In high-aitch-theta RFP discharges, the mode coupling of m=1 is enhanced by the high magnetic shear configuration, and the MHD activity is more turbulent as compared with that in normal-aitch-theta RFP discharges. Furthermore, the discrete increase of the toroidal magnetic flux is obviously observable. The increase of the toroidal magnetic flux generated by the discrete dynamo, which has an asymmetric structure in the toroidal direction, is only 1%–2% of the whole toroidal magnetic flux. The experimental results indicate that the discrete dynamo does not play an essential role in the RFP dynamo.

Notes: The dynamo structure in the reversed-field pinch (RFP) is studied through the nonlinear dynamics of a single-helicity mode. Simulation is concentrated upon the physical structure of nonlinear interactions of the plasma flow and magnetic fluctuation. The result indicates that when the initial equilibrium profile is deformed by resistive diffusion, the radial flow is driven near the core of the plasma. As this flow forms a vortex structure and magnetic fluctuation grows radially, the dynamo electric field is helically induced just inside the reversal surface and then the toroidal flux is increased. This dynamo electric field correlates to the nonlinear evolution of the kinetic energy of the m=1 mode, and the increase of the toroidal flux originates in the growth process of the magnetic energy of this mode. Consequently, the RFP configuration can be sustained by the single-helicity evolution of the m=1 mode alone, and the electric field induced by the interactions of the toroidal velocity and the radial magnetic field is the most dominant source on the dynamo action.

Notes: The effects of n-type dopant on InP embedding regrowth by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) are studied. It is found that the growth of the n-InP layer on the mesa structure is completely suppressed under a Se concentration of more than 8×1018 cm−3 and a mesa structure having a width of 1.1 μm. Using this novel MOVPE technique, a buried heterostructure laser diode is successfully fabricated without a selective growth mask. This achieves a threshold current as low as 14 mA, an external differential efficiency of 0.18 W/A, and an output power of more than 15 mW, at 25 °C.

Notes: The presence of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) in human eccrine sweat has not been reported previously. Clean sweat was obtained from the upper trunk and arms of subjects which had been painted with white petrolatum to minimize epidermal contamination. Sweat was concentrated ×50 by ultrafiltratlon, and its PA activity determined by the two-step assay method (conversion of plasminogen to plasmin with the subsequent assay of plasmin activity using the substrate S-2251), PA activity was detectable in nine of 17 subjects by this method, which probably represents an underestimate of the true activity because of possible loss of the enzyme during concentration. Scraped (crude) sweat samples contained less PA activity. Sephacryl S-200 gel chromatography of the PA-positive pooled sweat showed a major peak of PA activity at Mr 55,OOO. Gelatin-polyacrylamide enzymography revealed a major PA band at Mr 55,000 and a minor band at 33,000. Sweat PA activity was 94% inhibited by epidermal PA inhibitor and anti-uPA IgG, but not by anti-tPA IgG. We conclude that the PA activity in sweat is derived from the sweat gland and is most likely of the urokinase type. The physiological significance of sweat uPA remains to be determined.
