    Notes: A two-site solid-phase enzymimmunoassay was used for the quantification of group V allergen in grass pollen extracts in mass units. The assay is based on the monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs), 1D11 and 3B2 which recognize different epitopes on the standard Phl p V. The MoAb-ELISA is very sensitive (15 100ng ml Phl p V)and highly specific for group V allergens. Six pollen extracts of different grasses demonstrated parallel binding curves. The group V content ranged between 73 and 673 μg/ml in the extracts. The International Standard of Phleum pratense (IS 82 520) contains 400 μg/nil Phl p V. A good correlation was observed between the group V content and RAST inhibition, with the exception of Poa pratensis.

    Notes: Abstract Allogeneic interactions between Acropora hemprichi (Ehrenberg) colonies were followed in situ up to 18 mo between 1990 and 1992 in Eilat, Red Sea. We established all 21 possible branch pair combinations among seven large colonies in three to eight replicates each (n=92 pairs), in addition in 14 pairs of grafts within-colonies. All isografts resulted in fusion. Allogeneic interactions revealed a variety of effector mechanisms which involved the appearance of dark blue-purple color in the tissues of interacting branch tips (〈1 cm), unilateral overgrowths (1.0 to 1.5 mm mo-1 for 1 to 8 mo), rejections, healings, continuous overgrowths, reversals, repeated rejections and more. Direction of overgrowth was usually specific to a given combination of colonies. A hierarchial network of overgrowths was obtained by analyzing overgrowth directions of all pairwise combinations, which included 30 transitive and five nontransitive three-way combinations. These outcomes, similarly to responses of allogeneic encounters recorded from other coral species, show that colonies can respond selectively to different types of allogeneic challenges. It is suggested that corals may have the capacity to distinguish self from nonself by recognizing nonself attributes presented on conspecifics.

    Notes: Abstract Mouse embryos of the one-cell stage or the 32- to 64-cell stage were exposed to various X-ray doses (one-cell stage: 0.25-2 Gy; 32- to 64-cell stage: 1–3 Gy). It turned out that the shape of the dose-response curves is statistically compatible with the assumption derived from biological considerations that there is no threshold for radiation-induced malformations in the case of the exposure of one-cell embryos, whereas there is a threshold dose (close to 1 Gy) in the case of the exposure of 32- to 64-cell embryos.

    Notes: Conclusions This document has resulted from some intense debate between members of a group experienced in cruciate ligament surgery and research. Definite recommendations had the agreement of the group, while the absence of a firm viewpoint has led to recommendations for further research. It is hoped that the recommendations will be taken up by working surgeons, and that the system for describing graft placement, for example, will also lead to uniformity of presentation of results. For the researcher, a whole list of projects can be found above-there is still much to do if the reconstruction of these few centimetres of soft tissue is to be properly understood!

    Notes: Summary Many studies have demonstrated pharmacologic similarities between platelet and brain 5-HT2 binding sites. Therefore it may be possible to use platelets as a model for the central serotonergic neuron. Accordingly, a previcus report (Kusumi et al. 1991b) about elevated [Ca2+]i after serotonin stimulation in platelets of depressed patients was interpreted as further evidence for enhanced serotonergic sensitivity in depression. However, a very recent study showed an enhanced thrombin-induced platelet Ca2+ response, rather suggesting abnormalities of intracellular Ca2+ regulation in affective disorders. In the present study we have determined 5-HT2-and thrombin-induced Ca2+ responses in platelets and additionally phytohemagglutin (PHA)-induced Ca2+ increase in lymphocytes of medicated depressed patients (8 mono- and 2 bipolar, HRSD〉17) and of ten sex- and age-matched controls. The results showed no significant difference in basal calcium levels between the two groups and no significant difference in the Ca2+ response to thrombin although the response was higher in the patients. The Ca2+ increase after serotonin stimulation in depressed patients was significantly (P〈0.05) higher than in healthy controls. By contrast, the Ca2+ response to PHA in lymphocytes was significantly decreased in the patients. Our data confirm elevated Ca2+ responses after 5-HT2 receptor activation even in medicated depressed patients. However, Ca2+ responses in lymphocytes were decreased. Together with the observations of an enhanced Ca2+ response in platelets after thrombin stimulation, we speculate that the findings rather suggest alterations of [Ca2]i regulation in depression than specific changes of serotonergic sensitivity.

    Notes: Abstract Action potential recordings from isolated guinea pig ventricular cells in the whole-cell recording mode were used to study the toxic and photodynamic properties of the voltage-sensitive fluorescent dye di-4-ANEPPS. Staining of the cardiomyocytes with di-4-ANEPPS (30 or 60 μM; 10 min) did not alter the action potential shape. When the stained cells were illuminated (1W/cm2) severe effects on the action potential were observed. There was a prolongation of the action potential duration, occurrence of early afterdepolarizations, reduction of the membrane resting potential and eventually inexcitability. Addition of the antioxidant catalase (100 IU/ml) to the extracellular solution delayed the onset of these effects, suggesting that reactive-oxygen-intermediates take part in di-4-ANEPPS induced photodynamic damage. Since di-4-ANEPPS is a very important tool for optical membrane potential recordings in heart tissue and single cardiomyocytes catalase might be useful in suppressing photodynamic damage during optical potential recordings.

    The improvement of adhesion of polymer on titanium surface after treatment with TEA-CO2 laser irradiation (1994)

    Notes: The application of a Mini-TEA-CO2 laser for the modification of titanium surfaces to improve the bonding stability to a PMMA polymer is described. Cast and forged samples of titanium were treated with laser irradiation under different conditions. Depending on the kind of atmosphere employed during the laser treatment a differential change of bonding strength could be estimated. The compound stability was improved by a factor of 40 compared with the reference system. SEM pictures of the surface have shown that no cracks are formed but a modification of the laser-treated Ti surface topography similar to a freeze melting was observed. The results, found for a titanium dental polymer compound, should also be interesting for other medical applications.
