    Notes: The design and performance of a secondary emission electron gun with a wire ionized plasma as an ion source is discussed. An electron beam current density of up to 100 mA/cm2 is obtained over an area of 55×5 cm2 at a cathode voltage of 250 kV in pulses with a duration of about 20 μs. The current distribution over the beam area is uniform to better than 25%. The achieved combination of pulse duration, beam current, and electron energy is attractive to excite high-pressure gas laser media. Preliminary results with the utilization of the gun in an electron beam sustained discharge excited atomic Xe laser show an output energy of 1 J/l at a wavelength of λ=1.73 μm.

    Notes: The ionic excimer molecule XeRb+ is formed in an electron beam excited gas mixture of Xe, Rb, and a buffer gas. The formation and quenching mechanisms of ionic excimers are investigated by measuring the XeRb+ fluorescence as a function of the gas composition and gas pressure. The formation of XeRb+ is achieved by a three-body association reaction between Xe+, Rb, and a buffer gas atom. For the buffer gases He, Ne, or Ar the values of the important formation rate constants are determined from the observed fluorescence signal decay.

    Notes: Abstract The discharge characteristics of the XeF* (B→X) laser are investigated. The NF3 and Xe partial pressure of the laser gas mixture and the total gas pressure have been varied. A highest specific output energy of 4.7 J/l with an efficiency of 0.5% was obtained from a X-ray preionized Ne/Xe/NF3 gas mixture at 6 bar with single-pulse excitation through a multichannel spark gap.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential of magnification radiography in diagnosing fracture healing and assessing its complications. Seventy-three patients with fractures or who had undergone osteotomy were radiographed with both conventional (non-magnified) and magnification (5-fold) techniques. Since 10 patients were radiographed twice and 1 three times, 83 radiographs using each technique were obtained. All radiographs were analysed and the findings correlated with the patients' follow-up studies. The microfocal X-ray unit used for magnification radiography had a focal spot size of 20–130 μm. As an imaging system, digital luminescence radiography was employed with magnification, while normal film-screen systems were used with conventional radiography. Manification radiography proved superior to conventional radiography in 47% of cases: endosteal and periosteal callus formations were sen earlier and better in 26 cases, and osseous union could be evaluated with greater certainty in 33 cases. In 49% of cases magnification radiography was equal and in 4% inferior to conventional radiography. Additionally an “inter-observer analysis” was carried out. Anatomical and pathological structures were classified into one of four grades. Results were significantly (P 〈 0.01) better using magnification radiography. We conclude that the magnification technique is a good method for monitoring fracture healing in its early stages.

    Notes: Abstract The surface composition of the oxide formed on thin-film and solid OFHC copper samples exposed to a fast-atomic-oxygen environment in a low-earth orbit on NASA's Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), thin-film X-ray diffraction (TF-XRD), high-resolution profilometry, and reflectance measurements. The results confirm that it is easier to form thick copper oxide layers in the atomic oxygen ambient than is normally possible with other laboratory-based techniques.
