Notizen: The effect of exciton diffusion and localization on the cathodoluminescence (CL) intensity distribution using a scanning electron microscope has been investigated in a single quantum well and a multiple quantum well structure prepared by growth interrupted molecular beam epitaxy. Although of different origin, lateral variations of the exciton confinement energy occur in both samples on a length scale much larger than the exciton Bohr radius. The spectral and spatial CL intensity distribution is substantially influenced by diffusion of excitons to quantum well regions with low exciton confinement energy. The CL micrographs from both quantum well structures exhibit a similar bright/dark pattern with a typical length scale, which is determined by the exciton diffusion length in this material. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The temperature dependence of the spectrally resolved cathodoluminescence intensity from a 3.5- nm-thick GaAs-AlGaAs single quantum well prepared by growth interrupted molecular beam epitaxy has been investigated between 5 and 120 K. As the temperature increases, we observe thermally activated carrier transfer from wider quantum well regions to narrower ones. This observation indicates that there is exciton localization within the wider quantum well regions, one or two monolayers larger in width, at low temperatures. The contrast in spectrally resolved cathodoluminescence images of the quantum well is significantly influenced by this exciton localization and therefore does not necessarily reflect the lateral island distribution. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Photoluminescence (PL) dynamics of localized excitons in a strongly coupled 40 A(ring)/40 A(ring) GaAs/Al0.2Ga0.8/As superlattice under an electric field along the growth direction is reported. At zero field, a delayed PL formation due to the relaxation of dark excitons into radiative states is observed. With increasing field, both the PL decay time and the PL amplitude are strongly reduced. A rate equation analysis of the measured PL transients gives evidence that the field-induced dissociation of nonradiative excitons is important. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Delayed photocurrents were observed in GaAs/AlAs type-I short-period superlattices by measuring time-resolved photoresponses under ultrashort optical pulse excitation. According to the envelope function calculations, the X1 state in AlAs barriers resonates with the Γ2 state in the adjacent GaAs wells at a bias voltage where the delayed photocurrents were conspicuous. These results strongly suggest that the dynamic carrier transport process is significantly influenced by X1-Γ2 resonance effects in the superlattices. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The in-plane photoconductivity of GaAs-AlAs superlattices on GaAs substrates is experimentally studied as a function of the incident photon energy at different temperatures and light intensities. Superlattice and substrate are electrically isolated by a thick Al0.3Ga0.7As barrier but connected through penetrating contacts. Depending on the transport properties of the two subsystems pseudo-negative photoconductivity can be observed, i.e., at the absorption maximum of the superlattice the photocurrent exhibits a minimum. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract. A levoatrial cardinal vein is a rare congenital anomaly of the systemic veins. It is frequently associated with left-side obstructive anomalies. We report a case of tetralogy of Fallot with a levoatrial cardinal vein. The innominate vein was absent and two left upper pulmonary veins connected to this vein. There were no left-side obstructive anomalies.

Notizen: Abstract Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP)-immunoreactive (IR) axons in the nucleus gracilis of normal rats (1–15 months of age) were studied by light and electron microscopy. Besides many CGRP-IR and SP-IR varicosities with normal appearance, we found a few swollen (nearly round or oval) varicosities with either CGRP or SP immunoreactivity. Swollen CGRP-IR varicosities were more frequently seen than SP-IR ones, appearing from 3 months of age and increasing in number and size (up to approximately 25 μm in diameter) with advancing age. At the electron microscopic (EM) level, CGRP-IR and SP-IR swollen varicosities showed dystrophic changes, i.e., many membranous dense bodies, and proliferation of microtubules and neurofilaments. CGRP-IR or SP-IR dystrophic axons also contained many mitochondria and sometimes made synaptic contacts with nonreactive dendrites (occasionally with non-IR axons). These findings suggest that the dystrophic CGRP and SP axonal profiles represent a functionally distinct subpopulation of axonal dystrophy in the nucleus gracilis and use CGRP or SP as a neuroactive substance. Using a double-immunostaining method, many of normal CGRP-IR axons were identified to be SP-IR. However, no single dystrophic varicosity was found to contain both CGRP and SP immunoreactivities. These findings suggest that CGRP and SP afferents are independently affected and progress to dystrophic changes.

Notizen: Summary The localization dynamics of excitons within growth islands of GaAs/Al x Ga1−x As single quantum wells (SQW) have been investigated by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy (TRPL). Several samples with different substrate misorientation and growth interruption times are compared with regard to the photoluminescence (PL) emission dynamics. For monolayer (ML) islands larger than the exciton radius,i.e. long growth interruption, the time evolution of the different PL peaks reflects the transfer of free excitons between growth islands as well as the localization within a single growth island. The samples with shorter growth interruption reveal a much less pronounced PL splitting due to ML islands. The dynamics appears to be mainly determined by exciton localization to thicker ML islands. The density of localization centres is larger for the sample grown on misoriented substrates.
