Notes: Adhesion between thin Te-based alloy films and fluorocarbon polymer sublayers, prepared by sputtering or plasma polymerization, was investigated by observing the 1 μm-sized ablative hole opening process with a focused laser beam. Interpretations of the mechanisms for the change in energy required for the hole opening and pit geometry were based on the framework of studies of the ablative hole opening process for optical recording. Observations suggest that the molten material flow during the hole opening includes a ductile fracture and a viscous flow of the molten sublayer material as well as of active layer material. Adhesion acts as an energy barrier against the above mentioned flow of molten material during the hole opening process. Since the fluorocarbon films used in the present work had highly cross-linked structures, the adhesion was mainly dominated by the dynamic force of adhesion. Therefore, the hole opening process was mainly affected by the dynamic force of adhesion rather than the static force, which is dominated by the surface energy of the sublayer. There was a good correlation between the dynamic force of adhesion estimated by the peel-off strength and the concentrations of the -CF- and -C-CF- structures estimated from C1s spectra obtained by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to study laser oscillation mechanisms of a KrF-laser-pumped iron vapor plasma, the population densities of iron atoms, the temperature, and the electron density in iron vapor plasma have been measured. The iron vapor plasma was produced from an iron plate by irradiation with a pulsed YAG laser (2 J/pulse). The population density of the ground-state iron atoms is about 1014–1015 cm−3, the temperature is about 5000–20 000 K, and the electron density is about 1013–1016 cm−3. When a KrF laser of 34 mJ/pulse irradiates the iron vapor plasma, the absorption cross section of the KrF laser by the iron atom is about 10−16–10−15 cm2. An optical gain has been calculated on the basis of the experimental results, and it is compared with the gain measured experimentally. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thermal behavior of deep levels correlated with iron in Si MOS (metal-oxide-semiconductor) structure has been studied by isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy. As a result, it is shown that interstitial iron scarcely affects the interface trap (Nt) of MOS structure. This is made clear by measuring Nt of Si MOS diodes containing iron impurity, the interstitial component of which is controlled by low temperature annealings. In addition, the low temperature (400 °C) annealing decreases interstitial iron concentration as well as interface trap density. This phenomenon is very lucky for Si MOS devices. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A beam combine method of two ruby lasers has been developed for the JT-60 Thomson scattering system, that is mainly composed of a polarizer plate and a Faraday rotator. By this method we have achieved a minimum time interval of 2 ms between the two laser pulses homogeneously combined. Also a high energy transmission of more than 95% has been attained. As a result, transient phenomena measurement can be available especially for pellet-injected plasmas by using the Thomson scattering system. The beam combine method applied to JT-60 is very attractive in terms of upgrading a Thomson scattering system to a high repetition diagnostic without any essential change of the existing equipment, and has been working with no serious trouble since 1989. The application of this method to a multilaser system with three or more lasers is also discussed for the practical purpose of improving a repetition rate of high power pulsed laser. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To determine whether the local administration of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthra-cene (DMBA) into the hamster maxillary sinus induced carcinoma at the injected site, hamsters were injected with 30 μl of 0.5% solution of DMBA in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) through the infraorbital foramen into the maxillary sinus once weekly for 10 weeks (Group 2). Another group of hamsters (Group 1) received similar injections of 30 μl of DMSO only. In a third group of animals (Group 3), a roll of oxycellulose was inserted into the maxillary sinus and 40 μl of a 2% solution of DMBA in DMSO was injected once. Sinonasal carcinomas were demonstrated in 73% (8/11) of the hamsters in Group 2 and sarcomas were shown in 73% (8/11) of the hamsters in Group 3, as well as some carcinomas. No tumors were seen in the Group 1 hamsters. Histologic examination revealed squamous cell carcinomas arising from the surface epithelium and submucous glands of the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus. These findings indicate that the intrasinal administration of a 0.5% solution of DMBA in DMSO is a reliable method for inducing maxillary sinus cancer.

Notes: Abstract Transport phenomenon of three sulfonated azo dyes, C.I. Acid Red 88, C.I. Direct Yellow 12, and C.I. Direct Blue 15 into water-swollen cellulose membranes has been analyzed on the basis of parallel transport theory by surface and pore diffusion. Langmuir equation was applied into the mass balance equation to estimate dye concentration in the pores. The results were compared with the results obtained by applying Freundlich equation in our previous papers. The surface diffusivity (D s) and the pore diffusivity (D p) for the parallel diffusion model obtained by applying Langmuir equation agreed with those obtained by applying Freudlich equation. The theoretical concentration profiles for parallel diffusion calculated usingD s andD p coincided accurately with the experimental data when we applied either Langmuir or Freundlich equations.

Notes: Abstract The expression of human placental-type glutathione S-transferase (GST-π) was investigated in human cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and normal skin using Northern blot and immunohistochemical analysis. In Northern blot examination, the expression of GST-π transcript was recognized in all instances, and SCC showed a significantly higher expression of GST-π than normal skin. In immunohistochemical examination, GST-π was stained well in the cytoplasm of all cells of the stratum granulosum, many cells of the stratum spinosum and a few cells of the stratum basale in normal skin. Some cells of the stratum spinosum and almost all cells of the stratum basale showed only a weakly positive or almost negative reaction for GST-π. No nuclear staining of GST-π was obvious in normal epidermal cells. In SCC, many cells showed strong positivity for GST-π in the cytoplasm, and some were obviously accompanied by nuclear staining of GST-π. These findings suggest that GST-π exists mainly in many cells in the upper layers of the normal epidermis and that GST-π is involved in the process of carcinogenesis.

Notes: Summary Tyrphostins 9 and 47, inhibitors of protein-tyrosine kinase, inhibited the replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), whereas tyrphostin 1, which does not inhibit protein-tyrosine kinase, did not affect the replication of HSV-1. The inhibitory effect of tyrphostin 9 was more potent than that of tyrphostin 47, and the IC50 of tyrphostin 9 was 40 nM. Sodium orthovanadate, an inhibitor of protein phosphotyrosine phosphatase, increased HSV-1 plaque formation and its effect was partly reversed by tyrphostin 9. The phosphorylation of viral phosphoproteins was decreased by tyrphostin 9 in a dose-dependent manner, but the tyrphostin 9-induced reduction of protein synthesis was not dose-dependent. At the late stage of infection, tyrosine phosphorylation was demonstrated in HSV-1 phosphoproteins. These results indicate that protein-tyrosine kinase is involved in the replication of HSV-1 and that tyrphostin can inhibit the synthesis and post-translational phosphorylation of the viral proteins.

Notes: Abstract Expression of the high affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) on eosinophils has recently been reported. This led us to evaluate FcεRI expression on eosinophils in atopic dermatitis (AD). Double immunofluorescence stainings with an anti-FcεRI monoclonal antibody (mAb) and a polyclonal antieosinophil cationic protein (ECP) antibody were performed on lesional biopsy specimens from patients with AD and from patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) as controls. In AD and BP lesions, 77% and 70% of eosinophils expressed FcεRI, respectively. However, the intensity of FcεRI staining in AD was much stronger than in BP, suggesting upregulation of FcεRI expression on eosinophils in AD. In addition, the eosinophils infiltrating AD lesions were stained strongly with anti-CD23 mAb and anti-IgE antibody. At the sites of mite patch testing in AD, FcεRI-, CD23- and IgE-positive eosinophils were observed to the same degree as in the lesions, and a considerable number of mite antigen-bearing eosinophils were detected. FcεRI and CD23 were both upregulated on the skin-infiltrating eosinophils in AD and bound IgE molecules.
