Notes: Abstract In order to determine whether there is a difference in the effect of the hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor pravastatin on cholesterol synthesis between the morning and the evening, we studied the 24-h profile of mevalonate in plasma and urine in 11 subjects with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia. In study 1, eight subjects with familial hypercholesterolaemia took pravastatin (20 mg) once in the morning, and another 20-mg dose in the evening after a 1-week wash-out period. In study 2, five subjects with familial hypercholesterolaemia took pravastatin (20 mg per day) in the morning on 3 consecutive days and on 3 days in the evening after a 1 day wash-out. Plasma mevalonate concentrations were reduced at 9 h and 5 h after pravastatin administration in the morning and the evening, respectively. Urinary mevalonate excretion was significantly reduced at 4–8 h after pravastatin administration in the morning (51 vs 19 nmol ⋅h−1) and at 4–16 h after pravastatin administration in the evening (56 vs 27 nmol ⋅h−1). Daily urinary mevalonate excretion was equally and significantly reduced by pravastatin in the morning or evening. In conclusion, we found that morning and evening administration of pravastatin caused equal reductions in plasma and urinary mevalonate concentrations.

Notes: Longitudinal optical (LO) phonon relaxation is investigated in a GaAs/AlGaAs triple barrier tunnel diode at strong perpendicular magnetic fields. We observe LO-phonon assisted tunneling to the ground state as well as to Landau level states. Maxima in the LO-phonon assisted tunnel peak are found each time the LO-phonon energy matches multiple of the Landau level spacing. Corresponding maxima as well as parity effects are found in the integral tunnel conductance. The results indicate enhancement of LO-phonon assisted inter Landau level transitions with increasing magnetic field. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A 43-year-old man with tumour Stage mycosis fungoides developed multiple follicular pustules on the trunk during total-skin electron beam therapy. A potassium hydroxide preparation of (he contents of the pustules revealed the presence of Demodex mites. The patient was treated with 6% sulphur lotion with rapid improvement of the cutaneous lesions. We believe that this case represents a pustular folliculitis caused by Demodex mites, Immunosuppression associated with mycosis fungoides and its treatment may have resulted in the proliferation of this obligate parasite of the pilosebaceous follicle, and the development of the folliculitis.

Notes: Abstract Among nerve cells of vertebrates, the olfactory epithelia are uncommon in their capacity for cell turnover. Apoptosis is well known to play a key role in maintaining homeostasis in continuously renewing tissues. We examined whether true apoptosis occurred in the normal olfactory epithelia of healthy adult guinea pigs using nucleic acid labeling. Subsequently, apoptosis was recognized in olfactory nerve cells, indicating that apoptosis might play a role in turnover of the olfactory epithelium.

Notes: Abstract The competition between fusion-fission and deeply inelastic reactions in the Cl + Ni system has been studied by investigating the exit channelQ-value dependence of theZ-distributions of fission-like fragments. TheZ-, kinetic energy- and angular distributions of the fission-like fragments produced in the37Cl +64Ni system atE lab=170, 186 MeV and in the28Si +74Ge system atE lab=176 MeV have been measured by counter telescopes. TheZ-distribution of the37Cl +64Ni system was found to be essentially the same as that of the35Cl +62Ni system at the same bombarding energy. It is shown that this result can not be explained by the statistical fusion fission model but is consistent with a deeply inelastic model. A systematic study of the fission-like phenomenon in this mass region indicates that the maximum angular momenta for fusion reactions as well as the minimum angular momenta for DIC can be reproduced by the Bass model in the sliding limit (f=1.0) while the maximum angular momenta for fully energy-damped deeply inelastic reactions are governed by the strong interaction radius as predicted by the successive critical distance fusion model. The significance of these results are discussed.

Notes: Summary This study is an experimental investigation on a novel oscillation phenomenon of a water rivulet on a smooth hydrophobic surface. It is found that the water rivulet running down on a smooth Plexiglass plate exhibits all together four distinctive patterns with increasing either the Froude number, the Weber number or the Reynolds number. Once either the Froude number, the Weber number or the Reynolds number exceeds the third critical value, the rivulet on a smooth Plexiglass plate is restabilized, and becomes almost straight. However, in the restable rivulet, several beads of a rosary are formed following immediately downstream of the pipe mouth. This is no more than the novel oscillation phenomenen of the water rivulet on a smooth Plexiglass plate. The oscillatory motion is steady in the hydrodynamical sense, because the phase of the oscillation is always the same at each point in space. It is found that with increasing either the Froude number, the Weber number or the Reynolds number, not only the wave-length and width of the beads in the restable rivulet increase, but also the rivulet itself becomes more straight and stable. On one hand, with increasing distance from the pipe mouth along the central axis of the rivulet, the local maximum width of each of the beads decreases, but its wave-length increases. It is suggested that the oblique surface waves generated at the left and right contact lines of the rivulet play a primary role in the contraction process of the novel oscillation phenomenon of the restable rivulet.
