    Notes: We report the observation by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy of cross-barrier recombination between spatially separated two-dimensional electron and hole gases confined respectively in the quantum well (QW) and collector accumulation layer of a GaAs/AlGaAs double-barrier resonant tunneling structure. At the onset of the n=3(E3) resonance in the current–voltage characteristic, the energy of the cross-barrier transition Ecr is found to coincide with that of the PL peak arising from recombination of electrons from the E3 confined level in the QW with n=1 confined hole states (E3lh recombination). Similarly, at the onset of the E4 resonance, Ecr≈E4lh. We show that this behavior arises as a consequence of the symmetrical potential distribution within the structure at the onsets of the resonances. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Theoretical results recently obtained for polarizability of intersecting spherical particles have been compared with those for polarizability of intersecting cardioidal particles resembling the spherical shape. Calculations based on a modified Parseval Rule have been performed for a number of metals in a dielectric matrix in a quasistatic approximation. A large difference in the polarizabilities has been found in spite of a striking similarity in their shapes. An unexpected small value for both the real and the imaginary part of the polarizability of cardioidal shaped metal particles occurs at wavelengths where simple metal spheres absorb strongly. A Maxwell-Garnett model has been used to compare the optical properties of composite materials containing the cardioidal and intersecting spherical particles of interest. It has been found that a composite containing cardioid shaped particles in a dielectric matrix can have an unusual response. Its absorption is very close to zero, while the refractive index is close to that of the fully dense host. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The introduction of a divertor Thomson scattering system in DIII-D [J. Luxon et al., International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1986), p. 159] has enabled accurate determination of the plasma properties in the divertor region. Two plasma regimes are identified: detached and attached. The electron temperature in the detached regime is about 2 eV, much lower than 5–10 eV determined earlier. Fluid models of the DIII-D scrape-off layer plasma successfully reproduce many of the features of these two regimes, including the boundaries for transition between them. Detailed comparison between the results obtained from the fluid models and experiment suggest the models underestimate the spatial extent of the low-temperature region associated with the detached plasma mode. Low-temperature atomic physics processes that are not included in the present models may account for this discrepancy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied 64 pregnant women (9 weeks gestation and greater undergoing elective vaginal termination of pregnancy.) They were allocated randomly to one of two groups to receive either 1 ml (10 units) of syntocinon or 1 ml of saline (placebo) after cervical dilatation. Anaesthesia was standardised and surgery was performed by a single blinded gynaecologist, who assessed the size of the uterus and graded uterine contractility. All patients received a Cervagem vaginal suppository 70-270 min before surgery. The volume of blood loss was calculated colorimetrically and found to be less than 100 ml in all patients. The median blood loss in the syntocinon group (n = 30) was 17.6 ml, (range 6.1-12.7) and was significantly less than that in the placebo group (n = 34), median blood loss 24.5ml, (range 6.7–94.3) (p = 0.02). Six patients in the saline group had unsatisfactory uterine contraction compared with none in the syntocinon group (p = 0.025).

    Notes: This report documents the difficulty breeders have experienced in combining resistance to Cercospora leaf spot (causal agent Cercospora beticola Sacc.) with high yield in sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.). Forty commercial hybrids, all recommended for Cercospora-threat areas, were grown in a Cercospora-free and a diseased (inoculated) environment in 1991 and 1992. A 2.9 Mg/ha decrease in root yield associated with each increment increase in susceptibility confirmed that under a severe epiphytotic (1991) Cercospora resistance provided substantial protection. Under less-severe disease conditions (1992) there was no apparent relationship between yield and resistance, suggesting that the benefits of resistance were similar to the yield potential sacrificed to obtain the resistance. In the absence of the disease, root yields increased 2.7 Mg/ha for each increment of increased susceptibility. There was no evidence of association between sucrose concentration and resistance in the Cercospora-free environment. Despite the limited efforts and/or success in developing resistant commercial hybrids, the demonstrated ability of Cercospora to produce fungicide-resistant strains and the possibility that effective fungicides will not be available provide incentives to seek genetic resistance through breeding efforts.

    Notes: The structures of the 1:1 molecular adducts of the herbicide 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole (amitrole, 3-AT) with 5-nitrosalicylic acid (5-NSA), 3-amino-2H,4H+-1,2,4-triazolium nitrosalicylate, C2H5N4+.C7H4NO5−, (1), and 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA), 3-amino-2H,4H+-1,2,4-triazolium 3,5-dinitrosalicylate, C2H5N4+.C7H3N2O7−, (2), have been determined by X-ray diffraction and refined to residuals R = 0.035 and 0.037 for 1355 and 826 observed reflections, respectively. In both adducts, the acid protonates the hetero N atom of the amitrole ring. For (1), both molecules are involved in a network structure in which all available proton-donor and acceptor atoms, including the nitro O atoms, participate in hydrogen bonding. For (2), the two-dimensional sheet structure involves those atoms comprising the proximal sites of the interacting molecules, with limited interaction through the nitro O atoms.

    Notes: Abstract Exonuclease II (ExoII) from Schizosaccharomyces pombe is a 5′→3′ single-stranded DNA exonuclease. We have cloned its gene, exo2, whose nucleotide sequence revealed that ExoII is a homologue of the multifunctional Saccharomyces cerevisiae Sep1 protein (also called Kem1, Xrn1, Rar5, Dst2). S. pombe exo2 null mutants were cold-sensitive for growth, had increased cell size at the restrictive temperature, were hypersensitive to the mitotic inhibitor thiabendazol and to caffeine, and died rapidly in stationary phase. Many of these phenotypes are similar to those of sep1 (kem1 or xrn1) mutants of S. cerevisiae. In contrast, the exo2 mutation had only a moderate effect on progression through meiosis and no significant effect on meiotic recombination. We discuss possible functions of the multifunctional ExoII protein.
