Notes: A simple formula for reconstructing fully relativistic electron momentum distribution functions from incoherent Thomson scattering data is presented. Although the formula assumes the isotropy in momentum space, it may be useful for obtaining detailed information on the electron distribution function in fusion plasmas. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For solving a window coating problem, an in situ window transmission monitoring by inferring it precisely from a known attenuation of the deposited film has been developed in the JT-60U Thomson scattering system. Also the practicability of an in situ window cleaning based on a laser blow-off technique has been investigated extensively. The coated film composition could be guessed to be a resin such as polyacrylonitrile with a small amount of metals. The existence of chromatic upper limit has been found in the recovered transmission after the blow-off cleaning, which gives systematic errors only of less than 3% to an apparent measurement of both electron density and temperature at 10 keV or less. The attenuation itself is unchanged before and after the laser blow-off cleaning. A complementary use of both methods will provide the Thomson scattering measurement of high Te plasmas with durable reliability and sufficient precision in the existing tokamaks and the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The design concept and operation performance of a novel alignment system for accurate electron density profile measurement is presented, which has been developed on the basis of the original method for adjusting quantitatively and actively an object field of collection fiber optics to a laser-beam axis. The quantitative expression needed for an appropriate alignment was able to be formulated using the beam width measured in situ by this alignment system and the four laser scattering intensity signals from special alignment fiber bundles. The effectiveness of this alignment system for precise and reliable measurement of electron density has been successfully demonstrated in the JT-60U Thomson scattering diagnostic through direct monitoring and quick restoration of alignment. The important and distinctive feature of this alignment system is to attain compatibility between a stable and accurate maintenance of alignment and an improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio of Thomson scattering to plasma light accompanying the reduced fiber bundle width. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Mixed cryoglobulinaemia is frequently associated with chronic hepatitis. We report a patient with mixed cryoglobulinaemia, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and palpable purpura. The skin manifestations were diagnosed as leucocytoclastic vasculitis in view of both the clinical appearance and the histological findings. In this study, we demonstrated the presence of IgG–class anti–HCV–antibody. HCV–RNA and IgA–class rheumatoid factor in the cryoprecipitate. These results suggest that the cryoglobulinaemia in this case was caused by aggregation of an immune complex comprised of HCV and anti–HCV antibody with IgA–type–rheumatoid factor, and that this led to a cutaneous vasculitis.

Notes: Abstract Twenty patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma having mainly stage II or III lesions without distant metastasis, were treated with tegafur and streptococcal agent, OK-432, in combination with radiotherapy. As a consequence, 16 cases among the treated 20 cases showed complete remission by this therapy alone. Especially, we have found that the squamous cell carcinoma arising in non-keratinizing oral epithelium rather than in keratinizing oral epithelium has better response to this therapy. Among the 16 cases with complete remission (CR) by the current therapy, 10 cases were histopathologically diagnosed as well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and six cases as moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. When we examined immunohistochemically the expres-sion of various antigens such as proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), p53 and LeY or the presence of DNA fragmentation by nick-end labelling in the biopsy materials taken at the first visit to our clinic from 20 patients treated with the current therapy, the CR group showed a significantly increased LeY expres-sion level ( p〈 0.05) and DNA fragmentation rate ( p〈 0.05) as compared with the partial response (PR, n= 3) + no change (NC, n= 1) group. On the other hand, the CR group with respect to PCNA expression level was significantly decreased as compared with the PR + NC group ( p〈 0.05). From these findings, it can be considered that the therapy for oral squamous cell carcinoma by UFT and OK-432 in combination with radiotherapy is very effective, which may be associated with differentiation or apoptosis in oral squamous carcinoma cells. In addition, we present the clinical findings and results of immunohistochemical staining for the biopsy materials obtained from four CR cases treated with the current therapeutic method.

Notes: Abstract A patient with histopathological recurrent oral cancer with well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, was treated with differentiation- and apoptosis-inducing agent, vesnarinone, per os at a dose of 180 mg/day for 56 days and then at a dose of 60 mg/day for 93 days. The vesnarinone administration caused complete remission of the tumour. It has been found by immunohistochemical staining and PCR-SSCP analysis that the recurrent tumour has wild type p53 gene and relative high level of LeY expression as well as DNA fragmentation in the cancer cells, as assessed by nick-end labelling. These findings suggest that the cure of oral squamous cell carcinoma observed in this case might be associated with induction of differentiation and apoptosis of cancer cells by vesnarinone.

Notes: Abstract  The expression of tenascin (TN) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc and synovial membrane was examined in 18 human TMJ samples from patients with internal derangement of the TMJ and ten control specimens by an immunohistological technique using paraffin-embedded tissue and specific anti-human TN monoclonal antibody (RCB-1). The expression of TN was observed in all 28 samples, but it was limited to the walls of blood vessels, the perineurium, and the surface of the TMJ disc. The expression of TN was diffuse in the stroma of mildly hypertrophic synovial membranes and focal in the surface of severely hypertrophic synovial membranes. The clinical symptoms of internal derangement of the TMJ are thought to be related to the degree of synovitis. The present study demonstrates that TN is expressed specifically in the portion of the TMJ synovial membrane affected with internal derangement.

Notes: Abstract  A set of 150 doubled-haploid (DH) barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) lines derived from the cross of Harrington/TR306 was used to determine the number and chromosomal location of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling resistance to cereal aphids. The experiments were conducted under natural infestation in the field during two growing seasons: 1994 and 1995. Aphid resistance was measured by counting the number of aphids per plot. Counts were made on a weekly basis. Each year at the time of maximum aphid density there was an obvious difference in reaction between the parental genotypes. The DH lines showed continuous variation for aphid density. Simple interval mapping and simplified composite interval mapping revealed that the principal QTL determining cereal aphid resistance is on the distal region of the short arm of chromosome 1. This aphid-resistance QTL is linked with a heading-date QTL. At the time of highest aphid infestation, this QTL accounted for 31% and 22% of the total variance of aphid density in 1994 and 1995, respectively. A QTL on chromosome 5 was also detected but only by simplified composite interval mapping. However, the largest consistent effect was due to the QTL on the short arm of chromosome 1. This QTL may be a useful target for marker-assisted selection for adult plant cereal aphid resistance in barley.
