Notes: Uterine activity in spontaneous normal labour was studied in Singaporean Malay women at term with a singleton vertex presentation. Nulliparae had significantly higher uterine activity compared with their multiparous counterparts. Uterine activity in the Malay population was compared with that of a similar Chinese population. When controlled for parity, maternal height and birthweight of babies, there was no difference in uterine activity between the two groups.

Notes: A number of percutaneous dilational tracheostomy devices are now available for clinical use. Recently, a new percutaneous dilational tracheostomy device, the ‘T-Dagger™’ (Criticure Invasives, India), has been introduced for rapid bedside percutaneous tracheostomy. In a prospective preliminary study, we have performed percutaneous dilational tracheostomy (PDT) using the T-Dagger™ in 20 adult ventilated patients in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the new device. The T-Dagger™ facilitated bedside PDT in about 3 min with no untoward incidents. There was no significant bleeding, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, tracheal wall injuries or difficulty in ventilation in any of the patients. We conclude that the T-Dagger™ shows early promise in bedside percutaneous dilational tracheostomy. However, controlled studies are required in a larger patient population before it can be recommended for routine use.

Notes: The K-D2 point is the Korean hand acupressure point in Koryo Hand Therapy for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. We evaluated the efficacy of capsaicin ointment at the K-D2 point in 186 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a randomised, prospective, double-blind and placebo-controlled study. Patients were randomised to have either placebo ointment or capsaicin ointment applied to the K-D2 point of both hands 1 h before surgery under standardised anaesthesia. The ointment was removed 8 h later. Postoperative nausea and vomiting was evaluated 6 and 24 h following surgery. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was lower in the capsaicin group, with an absolute risk reduction (ARR) of 21%, a relative risk reduction (RRR) of 50% and a number-needed-to-treat (NNT) of 5 at 0–6 h (p = 0.001), and an ARR of 11%, a RRR of 85% and a NNT of 9 at 6–24 h (p = 0.003). The need for rescue anti-emetic treatment was also lower at 0–6 h (3 (3%) vs 11 (12%); p = 0.04) and at 6–24 h (5 (5%) vs 0; p = 0.02).

Notes: Summary The fluctuating free convection flow along a semi-infinite vertical plate is considered when the plate temperature is of the form T p −T ∞ =(T 0 −T ∞ ) $$[1 + \varepsilon \sin (\bar \omega \bar t)]$$ where 0 ≦ ɛ 〈 1, $$\bar \omega $$ denotes the frequency of oscillation and the mean temperature T 0−T ∞ is proportional to χ n (0 ≦ n 〈 1). Flow and temperature fields have been obtained by means of two asymptotic expansions. For small values of the frequency parameter ω, a regular expansion is obtained while for large ω the method of matched asymptotic expansion is used. It is found that the skin friction and the rate of heat transfer obtained from two expansions overlap satisfactorily for a certain value of ω. For n=1 the flow governing equations to a semisimilar form, and have been solved by finite difference method. The results obtained from the series and the finite difference methods are in good agreement.

Notes: Summary The laminar free convection flow and heat transfer over a vertical frustum of a cone is studied. The governing boundary layer equations are solved using local non-similarity method for constant wall temperature case. Local similarity and the local non-similarity two- and three-equation models are constructed and the resulting equations are solved numerically. Results obtained from two- and three-equation models are in good agreement. The numerical values of the flow and temperature functions required to calculate the surface skin friction and heat transfer rate have been reported for various values of Prandtl numbers.

Notes: Abstract Emission fluxes of CN, C2 and C3 species observed in the coma of some comets are analysed in the framework of Haser model. CN, C2 and C3 production rates are determined using recently derived fluorescence efficiencies and dependence of CN, C2 and C3 production rates on the heliocentric distance is studied. Evidence for a burst type activity around January 15, 1974 in the post-perihelion period of comet Kohoutek (1973f) is observed.

Notes: Summary A TLC method using silver nitrate incorporated in alumina G coated glass plates as a chromogenic reagent was developed for the estimation of diflubenzuron. The sensitivity of this technique for diflubenzuron was 0.1 μg and its residues in water down to 0.002 μg g−1 could be determined. Considering simplicity and low cost, this newly standardized TLC procedure compares favourably with available HPLC methods.
