    Notes: The management of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is hindered by incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease and the lack of good prognostic models. Few large randomized controlled trials of drug therapy have been published. Best practice in the management of PSC is currently based therefore on careful interpretation of the available evidence, close observation of individual patients and clinical experience of the disease. Drug therapy is useful for alleviating symptoms. Ursodeoxycholic acid may slow progression of the disease and reduce the frequency of complications. Consensus is emerging on the issues of screening for the malignant complications of PSC and the indications for liver transplantation are becoming broader and encompassing the earliest stages of cholangiocarcinoma. In view of the rarity of the disease in the general population, large international collaborations to study PSC are necessary to provide clearer answers in areas of uncertainty, and these are now beginning to emerge.

    Notes: Abstract Soft-X-ray and extreme ultraviolet spectroheliographs carried by the OSO-7 (Orbiting Solar Observatory) have been used to record the development of XUV emission associated with a flare of importance 1b on August 2, 1972. Spatial resolution was 20″ and spectral resolution was adequate to select emission lines originating within well-defined ranges of electron temperature between 5 × 104 and 30 × 106K. The data show that heating only the pre-existing coronal material adjacent to the flare site cannot account for the soft X-ray emission measure observed during the event. The flare emission originating at T e ⩽ 2.3 × 106K exhibits an impulsive component coincident with an impulsive microwave event. This radiation appears to coincide spatially with Hα radiation emitted at that time and is centered on the neutral line separating magnetic fields of opposite polarity. One soft X-ray-emitting feature, estimated to have an initial electron temperature of 2–10 × 106K, forms during the impulsive phase immediately over the Hα flare. A second, arch-like feature observed at wavelengths near 1.9 Å and estimated to have T e≅30 × 106K is located approximately 35000 km above the Hα event. Both regions have lengths of about 27000 km but transverse dimensions small compared to the spatial resolution of the spectroheliograph, i.e., less than 14000 km. The region with highest electron temperature exhibits the greatest stability in position. This region cools to approximately 10 × 106K in 6 to 12 min which is compatible with cooling by conduction to the chromosphere. The best association with a dark surge is found in an emission line of Fe xiv.

Wenn sich während des Fressens der Vorderdarm füllt, wird keine Nahrung an den Mitteldarm weitergegeben und sein Vorderende ist der letzte Teil, der sich vollständig ausdehnt. Nach Durchtrennung der rückwärtigen Rachennerven sind alle Teile des Vorderdarms offen-sichtlich mehr gedehnt. Eine solche erhöhte Nahrungsaufnahme tritt aber nicht ein, wenn die Nahrung relativ ungünstig ist. Das Abbinden des Kropfes verursacht beim nachträglichen Fressen keine übermäßige Ausdehnung des Vorderteiles. Die Nahrungsaufnahme hat keinen Unterschied im Körpervolumen zur Folge und das Durchtrennen des ventralen Nervenstranges bleibt ohne Einfluß auf die nachträglich aufgenommenen Nahrungsmengen. Das vergrößerte Darmvolumen wird durch Kollaps des Luftsackes kompensiert.
    Notes: Abstract During the course of a meal by insects with an empty gut, food is held in the foregut and the midgut remains empty. The last part of the foregut to fill is the extreme anterior end of the crop, and stretch receptors in this region control the amount eaten. Cutting the posterior pharyngeal nerves isolates these receptors from the frontal garglion and results in hyperphagia pharyngeal nerves isolates these receptors from the frontal garglion and results in hyperphagia during one meal. On unfavourable food, when smaller amounts are eaten, distension of the foregut is not involved in regulating meal size. Feedback from receptors in the body wall is not important in regulating meal size; most of the increase in gut volume resulting from feeding is taken up by the collapse of the air sacs so that there is little or no change in the body volume.
