    Notes: Two desorption peaks of hydrogen molecule (mass number=2), starting at about 600 and 950 K, respectively, are observed in thermal desorption mass spectroscopy of nanostructured graphite mechanically milled for 80 h under hydrogen atmosphere. It follows from a combined analysis of thermal desorption mass spectroscopy and thermogravimetry, that ∼6 mass % of hydrogen (corresponding to 80% of the total amount of hydrogen) is desorbed at the first desorption peak as a mixture of pure hydrogen and hydrocarbons. Below the temperature of the second desorption peak, at which recrystallization related desorption occurs, nanostructured graphite is expected to retain its specific defective structures mainly with carbon dangling bonds as suitable trapping sites for hydrogen storage. The formation process of the nanostructures during milling under hydrogen atmosphere is also discussed on the basis of the profile of Raman spectroscopy. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A 73-year-old man with angiosarcoma of the scalp died about 1 year after disease onset, despite systemic and topical administration of recombinant interleukin-2. Histopathology showed typical changes of endothelial cells with very sparse lymphocytic infiltration into the tumour. An autopsy revealed that the primary site penetrated cranial bone and invaded vertically into the subarachnoid space. Multiple metastases to lung, chest wall, vertebrae and ribs were also found. On immunofluorescence staining, the expression of vascular endothelial cadherin, which is present in normal endothelium, was absent from both primary and metastatic sites. This may have promoted local invasion and metastasis.

    Notes: The letter reports the fabrication of MgB2 superconducting tape using a flexible metallic substrate as well as its strong pinning force, which was verified by direct measurement of transport critical current density. The tape was prepared by depositing MgB2 film on a Hastelloy tape buffered with an yttria-stabilized-zirconia layer. The Jc of the tape exceeds 105 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T, which is considered as a common benchmark for magnet application. The Jc dependence on magnetic field remains surprisingly very small up to 10 T, suggesting that the tape has much better magnetic field characteristic than conventional Nb–Ti wires in liquid helium. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Nanostructured h-BN was prepared by mechanical milling under hydrogen atmosphere. The hydrogen concentration reaches up to 2.6 mass% after milling for 80 h, and this value corresponds to ca. 35% of that of nanostructured graphite as was previously reported. In addition to the hydrogen desorption starting at about 570 K, nitrogen desorption was also detected at about 700 K. There was no recrystallization phenomenon at least below 1173 K. The dissimilarities on the (de-)hydriding properties between nanostructured h-BN and graphite might be due to the different local electronic structure near the specific defects. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-density bulk materials of a recently discovered 40 K intermetallic MgB2 superconductor were prepared by high-pressure sintering. Superconducting transition with the onset temperature of 39 K was confirmed by both magnetic and resistive measurements. Magnetization versus field (M–H) curve shows the behavior of a typical type-II superconductor and the lower critical field Hc1(0) estimated from the M–H curve is 0.032 T. The bulk sample shows good connection between grains and critical current density Jc estimated from the magnetization hysteresis using sample size was 5×104 A/cm2 at 20 K and 1 T. Upper critical field Hc2(0) determined by extrapolating the onset of resistive transition and assuming a dirty limit is 18 T. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: MgB2 tapes and wires were fabricated by the powder-in-tube method. Stainless steel and Cu–Ni tubes were used as sheath materials, and no heat treatment was applied. The tapes made of stainless steel showed transport critical current density Jc of about 10 000 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 5 T. A high Jc of about 300 000 A/cm2 was obtained by extrapolating the Jc–B curves to zero field. Multifilamentary (seven-core) MgB2 wire was successfully fabricated using Cu–Ni tubes. For both tapes and wires, the grain connectivity of MgB2 was as good as a high-pressure sintered bulk sample. However, the Jc of the Cu–Ni sheathed wire was lower than the stainless steel sheathed tape due to the lower packing density of MgB2. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification technique was used to detect Flavobacterium psychrophilum from washings of fish gill surfaces and benthic diatoms as environmental samples. Gill washing samples were prepared from kawamutsu, Zacco temminckii (Temminck & Schlegel) and oikawa, Z. platypus (Temminck & Schlegel). Benthic diatom samples were collected from stone surfaces. All samples were collected from rivers in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan from November 2003 to January 2004. Following simple DNA extraction using a chelating resin, nested PCR techniques targeting 16S-rDNA and gyrB regions were performed, and PCR products were cloned and sequenced. With nested PCR amplification for the 16S-rDNA gene, ambiguous PCR products were detected from two of six samples, and by cloning and sequencing analysis were found not to be DNA fragments amplified from F. psychrophilum. Using nested PCR for the gyrB gene, however, five of six samples were clearly positive for F. psychrophilum in agarose gel electrophoresis, and were found to be identical with nucleotide sequences of F. psychrophilumgyrB deposited in DNA databases by sequencing analysis. Results indicate that nested PCR for the gyrB region is a useful technique to detect low levels of F. psychrophilum from environmental samples contaminated with many other organisms.

    Notes: summary  The effect of jaw clenching on local blood flow in the masseter muscle was measured using the hydrogen clearance method in 13 healthy subjects. Sustained isometric masseter-muscle contraction levels of 25 and 50% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) were investigated. The blood flow at 25% MVC before contraction, during contraction and after contraction was 12·3 ± 10·9, 19·2 ± 12·1 and 78·8 ± 63·9 mL min−1 (100 g)−1 (mean ± s.d.), respectively. At 50% MVC, it was 14·2 ± 12·9, 18·6 ± 10·0 and 80·1 ± 61·8, respectively. The volume of blood flow was significantly greater after contraction as compared with before contraction at both levels (P 〈 0·0001) and there was no significant difference between before and during contraction periods (P = 0·17: 25% MVC; P = 0·38: 50% MVC). At 50% MVC blood flow before contraction and the difference in blood flow before and during contraction showed significant negative correlation (r = −0·636, P 〈 0·02). When the volume of blood flow was low before contraction it tended to increase during contraction and decreased when it was high before contraction. These findings indicate that blood flow in the masseter muscle during sustained isometric contraction is affected by the condition of contraction and may be influenced by the muscle region. It was also indicated that the blood flow during high level contraction was influenced by the volume of blood flow before contraction. Clinically, our findings may help to understand pathological changes which may lead to chronic masticatory muscle pain.
