    Notes: Hierarchically 3D porous bioactive glasses (BGs) with various combination of bothpore sizes and pore structures have been produced by multi-polymer templating, such asamphiphilic block copolymers, poly urethane (PU) forms, poly styrene (PS) beads, or methylcellulose (MC), sol-gel method, evaporation-induced self-assembly process, and rapid prototypingtechnique. The amphiphilic block copolymers used for producing the meso pores into the BGs,which induces large specific surface area and subsequently carries with good bone-formingbioactivity of BGs. Each poly urethane form, poly styrene bead, and methyl cellulose adapted forthe fabrication of macro pores.     Notes: The titanium alloys containing the Nb transition elements have been investigated as theNi-free shape memory and the biomedical alloys with a low elastic modulus. The mechanicalproperties of the alloys depended upon the meta-stable phases like the α`, α``, ω. To study themartensitic transformations from the β to α`` or α` the Ti-xNb (x=0 to 40 wt%) alloys were meltedinto the button type ingots using a VAR, and followed by the water-quenching after the soaking at1000oC for 2hrs. The crystallography of the martensitic phases in the water-quenched alloys wasanalyzed using a XRD. The diffraction peaks of the orthorhombic martensites were identified by thecrystallographic relationship with the bcc matrix. The lattice parameters of the orthorhombicmartensites were varied continuously with the contents of the Nb elements. The martensitictransformations of the alloys were studied using the phenomenological theory of Bowles andMackenzie

    Notes: Poly ε-caprolactone(PCL)/hydroxyapatite(HA) composite scaffolds were fabricated byparticulate leaching and freeze drying routes with different HA content. Porosity was decreasedwith HA addition, while mean pore size was maintained at around porogen size regardless of HAcontent. Compressive modulus was increased with increasing HA content. In this study, theoptimum content of HA was around 40% in weight against PCL to obtain the highest compressivemodulus with keeping porosity above 85%. HA apparently enhanced proliferation of osteoblast-likeMG63 cells in PCL/HA composite scaffolds. Typical adhesion, migration and aggregationprocedure of MG63 cells were found on PCL, while spreading morphology only was found on HAeven at the early stage of adhesion without migration or aggregation

    Notes: Porous and bioactive composite scaffolds based on poly ε-caprolactone(PCL) andhydroxyapatite(HA) were successfully fabricated by solvent casting and salt leaching method. Thescaffolds have interconnected pore structure with pore size ranging from 10μm to 500μm. The poresize of PCL scaffold and PCL/HA scaffold were similar to that of the salt particles. The pore wallsbecame thick and the small pores on the surface of macropores were formed as the HA increased.MTT assay showed that HA content did not affect initial cell attachment in both PCL scaffolds andPCL/HA scaffolds. The osteoblasts proliferated in both scaffolds, but the cell number was higher inthe PCL/HA composite scaffolds. It was found that the incorporation of hydroxyapatite enhancesbone cell proliferation rather than initial cell attachment in PCL/HA composite scaffolds. Theresults suggest that the PCL/HA composite scaffolds have a potential for the bone tissueengineering applications

    Notes: New titanium alloys with a low elastic modulus have been developed for biomedicalapplications to avoid the stress shielding effect of an artificial prosthesis. The newly developed alloys contained the transition elements like Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta which were non-cytotoxicity elements and β stabilizers. In the present paper the elastic moduli of Ti-xM containing Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta were evaluated by measuring the velocity of supersonic wave (Pulse Echo Overlap). The effectiveness of the alloying elements for lowering the elastic modulus was investigated. In addition, the dominant factors for the low modulus were discussed. Ta was the most effective in lowering the elastic modulus of the alloys. The effectiveness of Hf was not acceptable for decreasing the elastic modulus. The dominant factor was the lattice parameter for Zr, and the poisson's ratio for Nb, Ta, respectively, in lowering the elastic modulus of Ti
