    Notes: Intra- and inter-sample similarities for four populations of the annual grass weed Phalaris minor from Haryana state, India, were examined using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) DNA markers. Levels of polymorphism within and between populations were low in comparison with values reported from other grassy weed species. Analysis of inter-population similarities allowed a partial differentiation of the four populations and of pairs of populations classified by cropping system. Analysis of the intra-population similarity data showed a weak but consistent and statistically significant negative correlation between the molecular similarity of seedlings and the physical distance between their mother plants over distances up to 40 m (the maximum separation tested) in all four populations. The consistency of the observed relationship between molecular similarity and physical separation, and the differences in cultivation practices at the four sites, suggested that the relationship may be a result of localized out-crossing, rather than an effect of localized seed rain. The results of the analyses are discussed in relation to the potential for evolution of multiple traits in the weed in response to changes in the wheat production system in the region.

    Notes: Intergeneric hybridization between wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and a wild weedy species, Imperata cylindrica (2n = 20) resulted in the recovery of a high frequency of wheat haploids, which were obtained through the elimination of I. cylindrica chromosomes. Cytological analysis of the root tips revealed the somatic chromosome count of the regenerants equalled 21. Haploid regenerants were also obtained in all the crosses of wheat F1s with I. cylindrica, implying the genotype nonspecific nature of wheat x I. cylindrica hybridization. Variation among wheat F1 hybrids was observed with respect to seed formation (44.9-84.5%), embryo formation (15.1-47.7%) and regeneration (27.0-75.0%) in crosses with I. cylindrica. Comparisons based on the efficiency of I. cylindrica and maize (Zea mays) as pollen sources indicated that Imperata-mediated haploid production is equally efficient. There is natural coincidence of flowering period of I. cylindrica with that of wheat under sub-temperate conditions which is advantageous compared with maize, which cannot be grown during the winter season in the sub-temperate regions.

    Notes: Interspecific hybridization is known to improve productivity and resistance to diseases in many crops. Therefore, an attempt was made to introgress productivity and disease resistance into chickpea from wild Cicer species. The true F1 hybrids of cultivated chickpea genotypes ‘L550’ and ‘FGK45’ with C. reticulatum were backcrossed twice to their cultivated female parents to minimize the linkage drag of undesirable wild traits. The pedigree method was followed to advance the segregating populations from straight crosses (without backcross) and BC1/BC2 generations to F5–F7. The interspecific derivatives recorded up to a 16.9% increase over the check cultivars and a 25.2% increase over the female parent in a preliminary yield evaluation trial. Of the 22 interspecific derivatives thus derived, four desi and two kabuli lines were further evaluated for seed yield in replicated trials at three diverse locations. These lines possess a high degree of resistance to wilt, foot rot and root rot diseases, and recorded a 6.1–17.0% seed yield increase over the best check cultivars.

    Notes: Broken pieces of three indigenous rice cultivars were utilized for the formulation of tube type pasta (Ziti-cut) using four levels each of vital gluten and guar gum. The rice flours were modified by pregelatinization and the pregelatinized flour was found suitable for pasta preparation based on instrumental and sensory texture analysis. The cooking time for pasta was reduced from 10 to 6 min by using pregelatinized rice flour. The textural quality of pasta was analyzed using texture analyzer (TAXT-2i) and descriptive sensory analysis techniques. A protein level of 16% was found suitable for production of rice pasta, which was comparable to commercial semolina sample whereas a gum level of 1.5% supplemented to pregelatinized rice flour containing 14% protein was judged the best on the basis of instrumental as well as sensory textural characteristics.

    Notes: This paper presents the steady-state and transient behavior of a single-phase self-excited induction generator (SEIG) using a three-phase machine with one shunt and one series excitation capacitors for resistive and inductive loads. The generation scheme consists of one three-phase delta connected induction machine and two capacitors - one connected in parallel with one winding and the other in series with a single-phase load. The dynamic model of the system has been developed as a hybrid model considering the stator phase currents in abc reference frame and the rotor currents in stationary d-q axes reference frame as state variables. The simulated and experimental results are presented for different dynamic conditions such as initiation of self-excitation, load perturbation and short-circuit. The simulated results of the steady-state analysis have been compared with the transient and experimental results and a close agreement between them indicates the accuracy and effectiveness of the approach.

    Notes: The neurochemical mechanisms that link caudal hindbrain glucoprivic-‘sensitive’ neurones with the forebrain gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH) axis remain unclear. Available studies indicate that the amino acid neurotransmitter, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), inhibits reproductive neuroendocrine function, and that caudal fourth ventricular administration of the glucose antimetabolite, 5-thioglucose (5TG), enhances GABA turnover within discrete septopreoptic structures that regulate LH secretion. The current experiments utilized the selective GABAA and GABAB receptor antagonists, bicuculline and phaclofen, as pharmacological tools to investigate whether one or both receptor subtypes function within neural pathways that suppress GnRH neuronal transcriptional activation and LH release during central glucose deficiency. During the ascending phase of the afternoon LH surge, groups of steroid-primed, ovariectomized female Sprague-Dawley rats were pretreated by lateral ventricular administration of bicuculline, phaclofen, or vehicle only, before fourth ventricular injection of 5TG or vehicle. The data indicate that, 2 h after 5TG treatment, Fos immunoexpression by rostral preoptic GnRH neurones and plasma LH levels were diminished relative to the vehicle-treated controls, and that inhibitory effects of 5TG on these parameters were attenuated by pretreatment with bicuculline, but not phaclofen. These results demonstrate that central GABAA, but not GABAB receptor stimulation during hindbrain glucoprivation, is required for maximal inhibition of reproductive neuroendocrine function by this metabolic challenge. The current studies thus reinforce the view that central GABAergic neurotransmission mediates regulatory effects of central glucoprivic signalling on the GnRH-pituitary LH axis.
