Notizen: α-GaN phase (wurtzite) was synthesized in GaP(100) by 140-keV N2+ ion implantation with a dose of 3.0×1017 cm−2 at 400 °C and subsequent furnace annealing at 950 °C for 20 min or rapid thermal annealing at 1000 °C for 15 s. The traces of α-GaN were recognized by glancing-angle x-ray diffraction, supporting by the observation of the planes belonging to the [0100]-zone axis in α-GaN by a selected-area electron diffraction analysis. The formation of microcrystalline GaN of 〈1000 Å in size was confirmed by using Auger electron spectroscopy and cross sectional transmission electron microscopy. A1 transverse optical phonon mode in α-GaN was observed at around 525 cm−1, indicating a nearly orientation relationship with GaN〈112¯0〉//GaP〈100〉. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The lattice distortion and the transmuted-Ge related luminescence in neutron-transmutation-doped (NTD) GaN are studied by combining Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy/channeling, Raman scattering, and photoluminescence methods. The lattice displacement of Ga atoms of ∼0.12 Å from the 〈0001〉 row is estimated from the normalized angular yield profiles, preserving the single crystallinity in as-irradiated GaN with a minimum yield (χmin) of 7%. A 2.84 eV emission band observed in 600 °C annealed NTD-GaN is associated with the Ga interstitial, supporting the lattice distortion. Two emission bands at 2.90 eV and 2.25 eV observed in 1000 °C annealed NTD-GaN are assigned to a negatively charged DX-like center of Ge at Ga site and a complex defect attributed to Ge at Ga site and Ga vacancy, respectively. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract This report concerns an autopsy case of rapidly progressive aphasia and motor neuron disease. The patient was a Japanese woman who was 75 years old at the time of death. The family history did not reveal hereditary burden. She developed language disturbances and difficulty in swallowing at age 74. Neurological examination 1 month after the disease onset revealed motor aphasia without dementia and bulbar sign, followed by muscle weakness of the four extremities. Neuroradiological examination revealed progressive atrophy of the anterior part of the left temporal lobe. She died of respiratory difficulty 10 months after the disease onset. Macroscopically, neuropathological examination showed circumscribed atrophy of the left perisylvian region and, histologically, neuronal loss in the cerebral cortex, including the primary motor area, substantia nigra, brain stem motor nuclei, and anterior horns of the spinal cord, in addition to obvious degeneration of the pyramidal tracts and presence of Bunina bodies. Ubiquitin-immunoreactive neuronal inclusions were present in the hippocampal dentate granular cells and frontotemporal cortical layer II neurons. Based on these clinicopathological findings and a review of the literature, we concluded that our case is the first reported case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with dementia that clinically showed rapidly progressive aphasia.

    Schlagwort(e): Key words: Gastric carcinoma—Lymph node—Magnetic resonance—Pulse sequence—Receiver-characteristic-curve analysis.
Quelle: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
    Thema: Medizin
Notizen: Abstract Background: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance (MR) images obtained with three different pulse sequences for lymph-node metastases in patients with gastric cancer. Methods: T1-weighted spin-echo (SE), breath-hold T2-weighted fast SE, and triphasic gadolinium-enhanced dynamic gradient-recall-echo (GRE) MR images obtained in 16 patients with gastric carcinoma were retrospectively reviewed. Regional lymph nodes were assigned to four different groups, and image review was conducted on a lymph-node group-by-group basis; 64 lymph-node groups were reviewed by two radiologists. Relative sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were determined based on the findings with definitive surgery and follow-up imaging. Diagnostic accuracy was determined by means of receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Relative sensitivities for lymph-node metastases with T1-weighted SE, breath-hold T2-weighted fast SE, and dynamic GRE images were 61%, 94%, and 59%, respectively. Relative sensitivity with breath-hold T2-weighted fast SE images was significantly greater than that with T1-weighted SE (p 〈 0.05) and dynamic GRE (p 〈 0.05) images. Diagnostic accuracy determined by ROC analysis was marginally higher with breath-hold T2-weighted fast SE (area under ROC curve [Az]= 0.87) than with T1-weighted SE (Az = 0.78, p= 0.08) and dynamic GRE (Az = 0.79, p= 0.12) images. Conclusion: Breath-hold T2-weighted fast SE sequence is useful in the detection of regional lymph-node metastases in patients with gastric carcinoma.

Notizen: Abstract: Objective: The effects of auranofin (AF) on apoptosis and on the biological functions of neutrophils were investigated.¶Methods: Neutrophils were incubated with various concentrations of AF for different periods. Cell viability was determined by the MTS assay and apoptosis was evaluated by flow cytometric analysis of propidium iodide (PI)- staining of the nuclei and annexin-V staining of phosphatidylserine in the cell membrane. The effect of AF on the expression of adhesion molecules (CD62L and CD11b/CD18) and on the generation of O2 - by neutrophils was also determined.¶Results: At a low concentration (1 μM), AF significantly prolonged neutrophil survival by delaying spontaneous apoptosis. Neutrophils incubated with AF for 12 and 24 hours maintained the capacity to express adhesion molecules and generate O2 -. In contrast, a higher AF concentration (5 μM) shortened neutrophil survival by the induction of cell necrosis.¶Conclusion: Although the biological significance of inhibitory effect of AF on neutrophil apoptosis remains unclear, it seems to be unlikely that AF exerts the anti-inflammatory effect in vivo by directly suppressing neutrophil functions. Since AF has a wide range of effects on leukocytes, its therapeutic benefit in rheumatoid arthritis may be mediated in a complex manner.¶

    Thema: Medizin
Notizen: Abstract This study aims to evaluate the validity and reliability of a Japanese version of the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales, version 2 (AIMS2) for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The Japanese version of the AIMS2 questionnaire was administered to 1643 patients with classical or definite RA at 11 hospitals nationwide in Japan. Reliability was assessed by a test–retest procedure, 4 weeks apart, using 75 randomly selected patients. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach's α, and factor analysis was used to obtain the proportion of variance explained by the first factor in principal component analysis. The validity of the AIMS2 scales was assessed by internal standards. Internal consistency (α coefficients, 0.84–0.94), test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients, 0.75–0.93), and factor analysis (0.62–0.85) of the AIMS2 health status scales proved that they are highly reliable in the Japanese version. Validity, as measured by the relationships among the scores on the questionnaire items, was also sufficiently secured. The validity and reliability of the Japanese version of the AIMS2 are sufficient for all practical purposes when compared with the original and with other translated versions of the questionnaire.
