    Notizen: 1 In the present investigation we examined the regulation of calmodulin (CaM)- and protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent pathways by cytosolic Ca2+ in the contraction of cat lower oesophageal sphincter (LES). 2 Force developed in response to increasing doses of acetylcholine (ACh) was directly related to the increase of the [Ca2+]i measured by fura-2. Thapsigargin, which depletes Ca2+ stores, reduced the contraction and the [Ca2+]i. In addition, contraction in response to maximal ACh was reduced by the CaM inhibitor CGS9343B but not by the PKC inhibitor chelerythrine. The contraction in response to submaximal ACh was reduced by chelerythrine but not by CGS9343B. 3 In permeabilized cells, the contraction in response to low Ca2+ (0.54 μm) was also reduced by CGS9343B. 4 The response to high Ca2+ (1.0 μm) was reduced by CGS9343B. ACh also inhibited PKC activation induced by diacylglycerol, which activation is inhibited by the N-myristoylated peptide inhibitor derived from pseudosubstrate sequences of PKCαβγ (myr-PKC-αβγ), but not of myr-PKC-α. 5 These data are consistent with the view that activated CaM-dependent pathways inhibit PKC-dependent pathways, this switch mechanism might be regulated by Ca2+ in the LES.

    Notizen: A two-step rf plasma oxidation technique of an insulating layer has been performed to enhance electrical and structural properties of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices. Comparison was made by analyzing properties of the MTJ oxidized by conventional rf and two-step rf plasma oxidation methods. Experimentally observed results give improved surface imaging and sufficient oxygen contents of the insulating layer under the two-step oxidation method. In addition, electrical breakdown voltage and magnetoresistance of the MTJ were increased from 0.7 to 1.8 V and from 4.5% to 6.8%, respectively, correlated with improved structural information. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Background Formaldehyde is associated with sick building syndrome (SBS), a set of diffuse and irritative symptoms predominantly involving the eyes and the respiratory tract. However, its pathophysiological mechanism in SBS has not yet been clarified.Objective In this study we investigated the effect of formaldehyde on the expression of adhesion molecules on human mucosal microvascular endothelial cells (HMMECs). Furthermore, we investigated the effect of formaldehyde on adhesiveness of HMMECs to eosinophils.Materials and methods HMMECs were incubated with various concentrations of formaldehyde (1 ng/mL−1 µg/mL) for 24 h, and the expressions of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM-1) on HMMECs were evaluated by flow cytometry. The change in the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 mRNA was then evaluated by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. To understand the role of formaldehyde in eosinophilic inflammation of the nasal mucosa, we examined the effects of formaldehyde on the adhesiveness between HMMECs and eosinophils by eosinophil adhesion assay.Results Formaldehyde increased the surface expressions of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 on HMMECs. Formaldehyde also induced ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 mRNA. In addition, the adhesiveness between HMMECs and eosinophils was also increased by formaldehyde.Conclusion These in vitro studies suggest that formaldehyde may play a role as the irritant of the nasal mucosa by increasing the expressions of adhesion molecules on HMMECs and by enhancing the adhesiveness between HMMECs and eosinophils.

    Notizen: Abstract Vascular involvement in Behçet's disease is divided into venous and arterial thrombosis and arterial aneurysmal formation. Subclavian arterial aneurysm rarely occurs in Behçet's disease; however, when it does occur, it causes serious aneurysmal rupture and local complications such as nerve compression and arterial ischemia. We describe the case of a 39-year-old male who presented with neurologic symptoms and signs of brachial plexopathy and mediastinal mass caused by Behçet's subclavian arterial aneurysm. This case shows that the occurrence of brachial plexopathy should be considered a manifestation of Behçet's disease, and that Behçet's aneurysm should be considered in the differential diagnosis of upper mediastinal mass.

    Notizen: Summary.  For the potential use as recombinant vaccine, canine parvovirus (CPV) major capsid protein VP2 was expressed using Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) vector. CPV VP2 gene was introduced into polyhedrin-based BmNPV transfer vector pBmKSK3, and recombinant virus BmK1-Parvo was prepared. When anti-CPV.VP2 monoclonal antibody was employed in immunofluorescence staining, an intense signal was observed within BmK1-Parvo-infected Bm5 cells but not within uninfected cells or cells infected with a wild-type BmNPV-K1. In hemagglutination assay, the expression level of VP2 were 3.2 × 103 HA units/ml from infected Bm5 cells, 2.1× 105 HA units/larvae from infected larval fat body, and 1.6× 106 HA units/ml from infected larval hemolymph. These results suggested that BmNPV vector system using B. mori larva as host could be applied to efficient mass-production of recombinant vaccines.

    Notizen: Abstract The large number of possible chemical reactions represents a severe burdenfor modeling of even relatively simple plasma systems. Reduced sets ofchemical reactions have been obtained for numerical simulations of nitrogenand nitrogen-hydrogen plasma jets flowing into an atmospheric airenvironment. The important or active reactions are determined based on asimplified reduction method. A reaction is considered active if it leadsto higher sensitivities than a specified cutoff sensitivity of 1%. Theactive reactions exert a significant influence on main plasma parameters,such as velocity, temperature, and species concentrations. The sensitivityanalysis for the specified systems shows that two NO reactions, known asZel'dovich reactions (N2+O⇌NO+N andNO+O⇌O2+N),(1) are both active in a nitrogenplasma jet. On the other hand, the latter is not active and may be omittedin a nitrogen–hydrogen plasma jet. A nitrogen–hydrogen plasmajet requires contribution of two active charge exchange reactions:N2+N+⇌N+ 2+N andN+H+⇌N+ +H, while only the former is needed in a nitrogen plasmajet. The dissociation reactions are all active in both plasma jets, exceptthe dissociation of OH.

We consider the gluino-mediated SUSY contributions to B0 - $ \overline{B^0}$ mixing, $B\rightarrow J/\psi K_s$ and $B\rightarrow X_d \gamma$ in the mass insertion approximation. We find that the (LL) mixing parameter can be as large as $\vert (\delta_{13}^d)_{\mathrm {{LL}}} \vert \lesssim 2 \times 10^{-1}$ , but the (LR) mixing is strongly constrained by the $B\rightarrow X_d \gamma$ branching ratio and we find $\vert (\delta_{13}^d)_{\mathrm {{LR}}} \vert \lesssim 10^{-2}$ . The implications for the direct CP asymmetry in $B\rightarrow X_d \gamma$ and the dilepton charge asymmetry (All) are also discussed, where substantial deviations from the standard model (SM) predictions are possible.
