Notizen: Photoluminescence experiments on double Ge layers were performed to give deep insights on the growth mode of Ge on Si in the presence of buried 4.5 monolayers of Ge islands. The critical coverage of the island formation and the wetting layer thickness were confirmed to be reduced in the second Ge layer. In addition, a drastic increase of the island density as well as a shape transition were observed by atomic force microscopy. These modifications of the growth mode are explained in terms of the surface strain induced by the buried Ge islands and the reduction of the nucleation barrier due to the alloying. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Background Allergic airway eosinophilia is suppressed by cysteinyl leukotriene (CysLT) receptor (CysLT1 receptor) antagonists in several species including humans and guinea-pigs, suggesting that CysLTs are directly or indirectly involved in induction of the response. Objective We examined the effect of CysLT antagonists (pranlukast and MCI-826) on antigen inhalation-induced eosinophilia in peripheral blood and lung, and on IL-5 activity in serum during late increase of airway resistance (late asthmatic response, LAR) in sensitized guinea-pigs.Methods Guinea-pigs inhaled ovalbumin (OVA) + Al(OH)3 and OVA mists alternately for sensitization and challenge, respectively, once every 2 weeks. At the fifth challenge, the effects of CysLT antagonists and an anti-IL-5 antibody (TRFK-5) on the occurrence of LAR, and blood and lung eosinophilia, which appeared at 5 h after challenge, were examined. The time-course of IL-5 activity in the serum after the challenge was evaluated by measuring in vitro‘eosinophil survival prolongation activity’. The influence of CysLT antagonists on IL-5 activity was assessed. Results CysLT antagonists and TRFK-5 completely abolished blood and lung eosinophilia. LAR was suppressed by both MCI-826 and TRFK-5 by 40–50%. Sera obtained from sensitized, challenged animals 3 h and 4 h after challenge induced an obvious prolongation of eosinophil survival. The activity of the sera was completely neutralized by prior exposure to TRFK-5, suggesting that it reflected IL-5 activity. Increased IL-5 activity in the serum was inhibited by both pranlukast and MCI-826 by over 90%.Conclusions CysLTs produced after antigen provocation sequentially induced IL-5 production from some immune component cells via CysLT1 receptor activation. Thus, it is likely that CysLTs indirectly cause antigen-induced eosinophilia through IL-5 production.

Notizen: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser scaling and the morphological and histological changes of the laser-scaled root surface in comparison with the effectiveness and root surface changes produced by conventional ultrasonic scaling. Fifty-three periodontally involved human extracted teeth with a band of subgingival calculus were used. The teeth were divided randomly into 2 groups for laser scaling and ultrasonic scaling. Laser irradiation was performed at an energy output of 40 mJ/pulse and 10 pulses/s under water spray, with the probe tip contacted obliquely to the root surface. Ultrasonic scaling was performed at a clinically standard power setting. The time required for scaling, the scaled area and the temperature changes were determined using both methods of treatment. The features of the scaled surfaces were examined by histological and scanning electron microscope (s.e.m.) observations. The Er:YAG laser provided subgingival calculus removal on a level equivalent to that provided by the ultrasonic scaler, without major thermal elevation. Macroscopically, the laser-treated root surface was somewhat rougher than or similar to the ultrasonically scaled root. However, the efficiency of the laser scaling was lower than that of the ultrasonic scaling. In addition, histological examination revealed a thin deeply stained zone on the lased root surface, and s.e.m. analysis revealed a characteristic microroughness on the lased surface. The laser scaling provided a level of calculus removal that was similar to that provided by the ultrasonic scaling. However, the Er:YAG laser produced superficial, structural and thermal microchanges on the root cementum.

Notizen: Background : It has been reported that inhibitors of gastric acid secretion prevent bleeding after endoscopic mucosal resection for mucosal gastric neoplasm. However, uncertain whether an histamine2-receptor antagonist or proton-pump inhibitor is more effective.Aim : To evaluate prospectively the effectiveness of famotidine or omeprazole for ulcer management after endoscopic mucosal resection. Methods : From July 2003 to October 2004, 57 patients were randomly assigned to famotidine or omeprazole for the management of endoscopic mucosal resection. Both drugs were given intravenously for the first 2 days, thereafter by mouth. The bleeding rates after endoscopic mucosal resection, the effects on the healing of endoscopic mucosal resection-induced ulceration, and cost-benefits were compared. Results : Twenty-eight patients received famotidine and 29 received omeprazole. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in patient characteristics. The bleeding rates after endoscopic mucosal resection were not significantly different (18% vs. 14%) between the groups. Similarly, no differences were seen in the size of the endoscopic mucosal resection-induced ulceration at 1, 30 and 60 days after resection between groups. The total costs of anti-secretory agents demonstrated a significant cost-benefit to those treated with famotidine (10 420 yen vs. 17 782 yen). Conclusions : Famotidine is suggested as a better alternative to omeprazole for the management of endoscopic mucosal resection, as it showed a clear cost-benefit, and the healing results after endoscopic mucosal resection were similar for the two treatment strategies.

Notizen: Influence of applied tensile and bending strains on the local and overall transport criticalcurrent Ic and n-value at 77 K of multifilamentary Bi2223-composite superconductor was studied, where the n-value refers to the sharpness of the transition from super- to normal conducting state.Under both tensile and bending strains, the damage such as transverse and longitudinal cracking ofthe Bi2223 filaments and interfacial debonding between the filament and silver progressed. Theextent of damage and accordingly the critical current was different among the local portions. Therelation of the local current and n-value to overall ones was analyzed with a voltage summationmodel, with which the experimental result was described well. Further analysis revealed that thedistribution of local critical current could be described by the Weibull distribution function andn-value could be expressed as a function of critical current. Based on these results, a Monte Carlosimulation was carried out to predict the overall critical current from the distribution of local criticalcurrent, with which the experimental results could be described

Notizen: Abstract The population structure and spatial pattern of major tree species in a warm-temperate old-growth evergreen broad-leaved forest in the Tatera Forest Reserve of Japan were investigated. All stems ≥ 5 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) were mapped on a 4 ha plot and analyses were made of population structure and the spatial distribution and spatial association of stems in different vertical layers for nine species. This was done in the context of scale dependency. The plot was located on a very gentle slope and 17.1% of its canopy layer was in gaps. It contained 45 woody plant species and 4570 living stems with a basal area of 63.9 m2 ha−1. Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, the most dominant species for the basal area, had the maximum DBH among the species present, fewer smaller stems and a lower coefficient of statistical skewness of the DBH distribution. The second most dominant species, Dystilium racemosum, had the highest stem density (410 ha−1), more abundant smaller stems and a relatively higher coefficient of skewness. Most stems in different vertical layers showed a weakly aggregated distribution with loose colonies as basic units. Gap dependency for the occurrence of stems under the canopy layer was weak. Maximum slope degree of the plot also weakly affected the occurrence of stems. Spatial associations varied among intra- and interspecific cohorts in the different layers and spatial scales examined, and positive associations among cohorts were found more frequently as the scales examined became larger. This tendency suggests that key factors forming observed spatial associations might vary with the spatial scales.
