Notes: Abstract. High-spin properties of the nucleus 169Hf have been studied through the fusion evaporation reaction 96Zr(76Ge,3n)169Hf at a beam energy of 310 MeV. The known rotational bands have been extended considerably and 6 new bands have been established, four of which form coupled bands with pronounced M1 connections. Quasiparticle assignments are suggested for the new band structures, and it appears that coupling to vibrational degrees of freedom plays a role. Both coupled bands involve the excitation of quasiprotons. In the region of highest spin, a large alignment gain is interpreted in terms of a mixed crossing where an h 9/2 and an h 11/2 quasiproton provide the two signatures of the aligning configuration.

Notes: Summary A simple approach to stereotaxic radiography, including a new method for determination of target coordinates, is described. The proposed technique may be used in combination with conventional equipment for roentgen eximinations available in X-ray departments and operating rooms; the only additional outfit needed is a coordinate frame that can be attached to the patient's head. Determination of the coordinates is easily made graphically, or from a simple equation using a pocket calculator or a mini-computer.

Notes: Summary To eliminate the occurrence of artefacts produced by clips on the CT images, the use of titanium clips is suggested. Testsin vitro andin vivo indicate that clips manufactured from 0.2 mm thick 99.9 per cent titanium do not cause artefacts. They are resistant to corrosion, nontoxic, effective, easy to handle, relatively cheap, and are visible on plain X-ray films.

Notes: Summary A ring detector positron camera system for CT of the brain is described. The system uses 95 NaI (Tl) detectors, arranged with cylindrical geometry, for the simultaneous detection of coincidences from 1900 detector combinations. With a new sampling technique an experimental system resolution of 7 mm FWHM has been obtained. The sensitivity was found to be 5300 c/s with a 100-keV energy threshold and using a 19.2-cm-diameter cylindrical phantom with a homogeneous specific activity of 1 μCi/cm3. A clinical study of blood-brain barrier damage using 68Ga-EDTA is reported.

Notes: Summary Suspected lesions in and around the sella were examined by CT in 129 cases. The diagnostic accuracy and various technical aspects of the method are described. The mean attenuation and enhancement after administration of contrast material are evaluated in craniopharyngiomas, chromophobe adenomas, meningiomas, aneurysms, dermoid cysts, an arachnoid cyst and a glioma. The choice of collimator and its use in relation to sellar dimensions, particularly the sellar depths, are emphasized.

Notes: Summary Two head-fixation systems, one using Thermoplast and the other Lightcast were tested as to reproducibility by comparing stereotactic coordinates before and after CT scan and after removal and reapplication of the helmets. Helmets constructed of Lightcast were more consistently stable than those constructed of Thermoplast probably due in part to the dental fixation used with the former. With Lightcast the change in position of coordinates was consistently less than 3 mm, i.e. 2 pixels, which is within the tolerance of the system as a whole.

Notes: Summary Using a polystyrene phantom and various concentrations of iodine contrast material, the discrimination of blood vessels by the EMI scanner was studied. Although a 2 mm tube can be delineated using high concentrations of iodine, smaller tubes are not seen due to noise inherent in the system.

Notes: Summary The changes of the enhancement of the lesion with time after intravenous administration of contrast medium were measured with computed tomography (CT) in 23 cases of acoustic neuroma. The pattern of high initial enhancement followed by a fairly rapid decrease is confirmed. A more rigorous study of the enhancement pattern using a mathematical description of the enhancement curve of the tumor as well as a measurement of the individual blood enhancement curve is discussed.

Notes: Summary Attenuation profiles across the petrous bone covering the whole internal auditory meatus (IAM) were constructed from the printouts obtained by computed tomography (CT) with narrow collimation performed on 12 patients with 13 acoustic neuromas. In healthy patients the attenuation profiles of right and left petrous bone were very similar in shape. The attenuation values of the individual pixels in the pixel columns of the printout located at the site of the porus and the IAM reflected the demineralization of the petrous bone and the widening of the porus and the IAM caused by the acoustic neuroma. A widening deep in the meatus was demonstrated in a patient with an intracanalicular tumor, and therefore it seems possible to make this diagnosis by CT scanning combined with the construction of attenuation profiles across the petrous bone. In the presence of unilateral acoustic neuroma there was a significant and characteristic difference in shape between the attenuation profiles of the two sides with generally lower attenuation values on the tumor side together with signs of widening of the porus and the IAM. In cases of bilateral acoustic neuroma comparison of the attenuation profiles can be made with mean attenuation curves obtained from scanning normal petrous bones. The prevailing physical limitations for demonstrating a narrow bony canal like the IAM with CT was experimentally analyzed using bone-simulating plastic material.

Notes: Summary The attenuation value of CSF, obtained by lumbar puncture, was determined with computed tomography in 25 patients. Measurement of the protein content in the same samples showed no correlation with the attenuation value. It is concluded that in the normal range of protein concentrations, the effect on the attenuation is insignificant and that the attenuation value of the CSF might be used to check large deviations in the CT numbers due to artifacts.
