    Notizen: In order to examine magnetic properties of a spin-glass Mn0.55Mg0.45TiO3 under magnetic fields, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, muon spin relaxation (μSR), and neutron scattering measurements have been performed. A freezing temperature observed by the dc magnetization and the ac susceptibility strongly depends on magnetic field, H. But for the latter, the H dependence becomes weak, as the measuring frequency increases. In the μSR and the neutron scattering measurements, no significant field dependence is observed. These results demonstrate that the field dependence of the freezing temperature becomes weaker, as the time scale of measurements shortens. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The effects of post-H+ implantation on electron traps that are induced by P+ implantation (300 keV, 1×109 cm−2) has been studied by deep-level transient spectroscopy. H+ implantation is performed at room temperature to a dose of 2×1010 cm−2 in the range 30–120 keV. The post-H+ implantation partly decreases the concentration of the electron traps induced by P+ implantation, although it increases the concentrations around the projected range of H+. The annealing effect is ascribed to the reaction of preexisting defects with point defects induced by postimplantation. Peaks are observed in the reduction ratio profiles of the preexisted trap concentrations versus the distance from the projected ranges of postimplantation. The highest values of the reduction ratios in each postimplantation tend to decrease with increasing distance between the projected ranges of P+ and H+. This is due to the decrease of the supply of point defects caused by postimplantation with increasing distance. We compare the reduction ratio profiles of the dominant three electron traps (Ec−0.12, 0.15, and 0.39 eV). © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Aim:  To demonstrate the antitumour effects of nobiletin (5,6,7,8,3′,4′-hexamethoxyflavone), a citrus flavonoid extracted from Citrus depressa Hayata, on human gastric cancer cell lines TMK-1, MKN-45, MKN-74 and KATO-III.Materials and methods:  3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, the TdT-mediated dUTP biotin nick-end labelling (TUNEL) method and cell-cycle analysis revealed that nobiletin acted on these cells in several ways, namely by direct cytotoxicity, induction of apoptosis and modulation of cell cycle. The efficacy of combined treatment of nobiletin with a conventional anticancer drug, CDDP, was also examined. Treatment with nobiletin 24 h prior to CDDP administration showed a synergistic effect compared to the control.Conclusions:  Although the effective dose and administration route of nobiletin require further investigation, our study represents a potential successful linking of this compound with the treatment of gastric cancer.

    Notizen: Scrotal calcinosis has been classified as a form of idiopathic calcinosis cutis. However, the pathogenesis of the calcified nodules has not been fully elucidated: it is still unclear whether the condition is truly idiopathic, or the result of breakdown of calcified epithelial cysts. We describe a 29-year-old Japanese patient with scrotal calcinosis originating from epithelial cysts. Light microscopy revealed a large epithelial cyst containing von Kossa-positive material and several small dilated ductal structures beside the cyst. The epithelia of the cyst and ductal structures were connected, showing similar eccrine duct differentiation on immunohistochemical staining and electron microscopy. In the cyst lumen, calcium was present as needle-shaped crystals. The pathogenetic mechanism of calcium deposition seemed to be due to excessive production and discharge of matrical debris and sulphated mucopolysaccharides, which derived from luminal cells, and their accumulation in the lumina.

    Notizen: Summary We describe a 75-year-old man who developed a vesicular variant of bullous pemphigoid with a distinctive result of immunoblot analysis. Characteristic symptoms consisted of vesiculopapular eruptions with erythematous patches on the arms and legs, many of which fused to form irregularly outlined areas of erythema varying in size. Direct immunofluorescence revealed a linear deposition of IgG at the basement membrane zone of the skin, and indirect immunofluorescence detected circulating IgG autoantibodies at a titre of 1: 160. which reacted with the antigens located on the epidermal side of skin split with 1 mol/L, NaCI. Immunoblot analysis using epidermal extracts demonstrated the presence of IgG antibodies directed to 150, 205, 240 and 280 kDa proteins as well as to the 180kDa bullous pemphigoid antigen (BPAG2). All antibodies eluted from nitrocellulose membrane imprints of individual bands with molecular weights of 150, 180 and 205 kDa were found by indirect immunofluorescence to react with the basement membrane zone, whereas those elutcd from the bands with molecular weights of 240 and 280 kDa did not. These findings suggest that antibodies directed not only to the 180kDa BPAG2, but also to 150 and 205 kDa proteins, are involved in the pathogenesis of bulla formation in this patient.

    Notizen: Abstract We present a new Monte Carlo simulation code system (DBREAK) of the detailed events that occur when ionizing radiation interacts with water and DNA molecules. The model treats the initial energy deposition by radiation, the formation of chemically active species, subsequent diffusion-controlled chemical reactions, and induction of DNA strand breaks. DBREAK assumes one-hit single-strand break (SSB) and two-hit double-strand break (DSB) mechanisms. A high-resolution model of plasmid DNA structure has been introduced. The calculated results are compared with the results of previously performed experiments of the same type. Under aerobic conditions, 89.4% of the DNA damage was attributed to OH-radical and 10.5% and 0.1% to e– aq and H, respectively. We also compared the differences between liquid-water track structure and gas-phase-water track structure. The calculated yield of SSBs by liquid-water track structure exceeded that of gas-phase-water track structure by a factor of 1.2.

    Notizen: X-ray holographic microscopy of biological specimens has been performed using in-line holography with the following improvements: (i) an electronic zooming tube is utilized as a detector, and (ii) the object planes are restricted by a metal frame which is not transparent to X-rays at the wavelengths used in the present experiments. The latter modification is useful in computer reconstruction and serves as a reference area where there are no photons in the reconstructed images. This system can minimize the inclusion of errors when recording and reading out holograms compared with methods using an X-ray resist as a detector, or optical reconstruction methods. Two-dimensional images of human cells have been successfully obtained with the present system. Comparison of these images with optical images revealed a good coincidence in structure outlines but not in internal structure images. Holographic observation of HeLa cells at different wavelengths showed a wavelength dependence of the reconstructed images. Since the electronic zooming tube is applicable to a wide range of X-ray wavelengths and has a promising potential to improve its resolution, these results strongly suggest that the present system is a good candidate for the development and establishment of an X-ray holographic microscopy system.
