Notizen: An occupational risk assessment for manganese (Mn) was performed based on benchmark dose analysis of data from two epidemiological studies providing dose-response information regarding the potential neurological effects of exposure to airborne Mn below the current Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of 5 mg Mn/m3. Based on a review of the scientific evidence regarding the toxicity of Mn, it was determined that the most appropriate measure of exposure to airborne Mn for the subclinical effects measured in these studies is recent (rather than historical or cumulative) concentration of Mn in respirable (rather than total) particulate. For each of the studies analyzed, the individual exposure and response data from the original study had been made available by the investigators. From these two studies benchmark concentrations calculated for eight endpoints ranged from 0.09 to 0.27 mg Mn/m3. From our evaluation of these results, and considering the fact that the subtle, subclinical effects represented by the neurological endpoints tested in these studies do not represent material impairment, we believe an appropriate occupational exposure guideline for manganese would be in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 mg Mn/m3, based on the respirable particulate fraction only, and expressed as an 8-hour time-weighted average.

Notizen: SUMMARY 1. Higher than average ambient water temperature in the first year of life may be responsible for strong cohorts of adult cyprinid fish. Whilst temperature explains much of the variation in year-class strength (YCS), however, it is not the only influential factor as high temperature does not inevitably yield strong year-classes. Furthermore, years in which a strong year-class is prevalent in one species do not necessarily result in strong year-classes in other coexisting species, suggesting other biotic and abiotic factors are important in regulating recruitment success.2. The relationships between water temperature, river discharge, the position of the Gulf Stream, 0-group fish growth and recruitment success (YCS) were examined in three cyprinid fish species in an English lowland river, using a 15-year data set.3. Mean length of 0-group fish at the end of the summer was positively correlated with water temperature (cumulative degree-days 〉12 °C) and negatively correlated with river discharge (cumulative discharge-days above basal discharge rate). Water temperature was negatively correlated with river discharge.4. YCS was positively correlated with mean 0-group fish length at the end of the summer and with the position of the North Wall of the Gulf Stream.5. ’Critical periods’ (i.e. periods in the first summer of life when fish may be more susceptible to increases in river discharge) were difficult to discern because of interannual variations in river discharge relative to the timing of fish hatching. YCS of roach and chub was most strongly correlated with discharge in the period from June to September inclusive, while YCS of dace was most significantly correlated with discharge in August.6. River discharge (rather than water temperature) may be the key factor in determining YCS, either directly (through discharge-induced mortality) or indirectly (via reduced growth at lower water temperatures, discharge-associated increases in energy expenditure or reduced food availability). It could be that, in effect, water temperature determines potential YCS while discharge determines realised YCS.

Notizen: A subset of myenteric neurons in the intestine (AH neurons) generate prolonged (〉5 s) post-spike afterhyperpolarizations (slow AHPs) that are insensitive to apamin and tetraethylammonium. Generation of slow AHPs depends critically on Ca2+ entry and intracellular release of Ca2+ from stores, which then leads to the activation of a K+ conductance that underlies the slow AHP (gsAHP). Slow AHPs are inhibited by stimulation of the cAMP/protein kinase A (PKA) pathway, suggesting that phosphorylation of the K+-channels that mediate the gsAHP (KsAHP-channels) is responsible for suppression of slow AHPs and possibly for the repolarization phase of slow AHPs. In the present study, we investigated the possibility that the rising phase of the slow AHP is mediated by dephosphorylation of KsAHP-channels by calcineurin (CaN), a Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase, leading to an increase in gsAHP and activation of the associated current IsAHP. Slow AHPs and IsAHP were recorded using conventional recording techniques, and we tested the actions of two inhibitors of CaN, FK506 and cyclosporin A, and also the effect of the CaN autoinhibitory peptide applied intracellularly, on these events. We report here that all three treatments inhibited the slow AHP and IsAHP (〉70%) without significantly affecting the ability of neurons to fire action potentials. In addition, the slow AHP and IsAHP were suppressed by okadaic acid, an inhibitor of protein phosphatases 1 and 2A. Our results indicate that activation of the gsAHP that underlies the post-depolarization slow AHPs in AH neurons is mediated by the actions CaN and non-Ca2+-dependent phosphatases.

Notizen: 1. Beaver Lake, a large epishelf lake in eastern Antarctica was sampled on two occasions during the austral summer of 2000. Two sites, one 1 km offshore and another 6 km offshore were sampled at intervals to depths of 40 and 110 m, respectively.2. The lake is an end member of ultra-oligotrophic lake systems with a very low carbon pool. Dissolved organic carbon concentrations ranged between 95 and 652 μg L–1. Nutrient levels were generally low with soluble reactive phosphorus ranging from undetectable to 8.4 μg L–1, ammonium ranged between 1.8 and 5.0 μg L–1, nitrate from undetectable to 161 μg L–1 and nitrite 1.1–5.3 μg L–1.3. Chlorophyll a concentrations (0.39–4.38 μg L–1) showed an unusual distribution with the highest levels close to the lake bottom at the offshore site (110 m) where the phototrophic nanoflagellates (PNAN) displayed strong autofluorescence.4. Bacterial concentrations were low, with a maximum of 7.60 × 107 L–1, as were the concentrations of heterotrophic nanoflagellates that exploit them.5. Primary production ranged between 19.7 and 25.49 μg C L–1 day–1 and bacterial production from 0.32 to 1.15 μg C L–1 day–1.6. In common with other continental Antarctic lakes, the system was dominated by a microbial plankton. However, a dwarf variety of the calanoid copepod, Boeckella poppei, occurred below 25 m at concentrations of 3–5 L–1.7. The data suggest that primary production and bacterial production were not limited by nutrient availability, but by other factors, e.g. in the case of bacterial production by organic carbon concentrations and primary production by low temperatures.

Notizen: Abstract – Fisheries data were collected for six species of 0-group cyprinid fishes from eight sites in the lower reaches of the River Trent, England, between May and October 1999 inclusive, using a micromesh seine net. Recruitment and growth patterns were observed via monthly length–frequency histograms and estimations of mean length. In the cases of roach and dace, growth was approximately linear through the summer, before declining in September and October. In the cases of chub and gudgeon, and to a lesser extent bream and bleak, however, there were suggestions of multiple recruitment events. It is argued that some of the fish species examined in the present study adopt fractional or protracted spawning strategies in the lower River Trent.

Notizen: I examine some common trends in ‘conflict management skills’, particularly those focused on practical results, and argue that they involve some moral problems, like the reliance on offensive stereotypes, the censorship of moral language, the promotion of distorted relationships, and sometimes the suppression of basic rights and obligations that constitute non–consequentialist moral constraints on human interactions (including dispute resolution). Since these approaches now appear in educational institutions, they are sending dangerous messages to those least able to critically assess them, messages that denigrate the language, reflection, and interactions on which the moral life depends, thus undermining the possibility of moral education in the most fundamental sense of the phrase.

Notizen: The title molecule, 2′-pyrenylspiro[2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene-2,5′-1′,3′-dioxane]-4,9-dione, C32H22O4, contains an electron-donating pyrene group spiro-linked to an electron-accepting naphthoquinone. The molecules are V-shaped in profile and stack to form columns along b with alternating, approximately coplanar, pyrene and naphthoquinone fragments. Intermolecular contacts within a column are consistent with some degree of π contact and possible long-range delocalization. Individual columns form a herringbone pattern when the crystal is viewed along b.
