Notes: In order to utilize upstream chum salmon as a component of nutraceutical food, their defatted muscle proteins were hydrolyzed with 5% thermolysin. The resulting hydrolysate showed high inhibitory activity against angiotensin I-converting enzyme (inhibitory concentration50= 27.9 protein μg/mL) in vitro. A significant reduction of systolic blood pressure was observed when 500 and 2000 mg/kg of body weight were orally administered into spontaneously hypertensive rats. Angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides contained in the hydrolysate were isolated with various chromatographs. These 6 active peptides were Trp residue-containing dipeptides: Trp-Ala, Val-Trp, Trp-Met, Met-Trp, Ile-Trp, and Leu-Trp. The inhibitory concentration50 values of these dipeptides ranged from 2.5 μM to 277.3 μM.

Notes: Surface potential measurements on InAs thin films grown on GaAs giant steps were performed by Kelvin probe force microscopy. We found that the removal of the water-related layer from both surfaces on a sample and a tip was very effective to improve the reliability of the surface potential measurements. The measured potential distribution corresponds to the surface corrugation of the InAs thin films. In addition, the InAs layer thickness dependence of the surface InAs Fermi levels is investigated, indicating that the surface Fermi level shifts toward the vacuum level as the increase of the InAs layer thickness. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We report an 8-month-old male presenting with gingival hemorrhages and nasal bleeding as the first symptom of a choledochal cyst (CC). On physical examination, there was a large cystic mass in the right upper abdominal quadrant. Laboratory studies on admission revealed moderate liver dysfunction and a bleeding tendency due to vitamin K deficiency. After administration of 5 mg vitamin K the bleeding tendency disappeared. At laparotomy, a large CC 5 cm in diameter was found and the liver showed moderate cholestasis. The sudden onset of a bleeding tendency in infants with congenital liver or biliary-tract disease may suggest not only biliary atresia, but also CC.

Notes: Abstract Distinct vascular and periadnexal immunoreactivity have been observed for amyloid b protein (Aβ) in skin from patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to make a more quantitative comparison of Aβ concentrations between ALS patients and controls. The insoluble fractions of skin samples from ALS patients contained significantly higher Aβ concentrations per milligram protein than those from controls. Various alterations in extracellular matrix components have been reported to occur in the skin of patients with ALS, and several matrix constituents have been shown to affect processing and aggregation of Aβ in human brain. Taking these previous findings together with those of the present study, our observations suggest that changes in extracellular matrix in skin of ALS patients may facilitate aggregation and deposition of Aβ.

Notes: Abstract  In situ synchrotron X-ray experiments in the system SnO2 were made at pressures of 4–29 GPa and temperatures of 300–1400 K using sintered diamond anvils in a 6–8 type high-pressure apparatus. Orthorhombic phase (α-PbO2 structure) underwent a transition to a cubic phase (Pa3¯ structure) at 18 GPa. This transition was observed at significantly lower pressures in DAC experiments. We obtained the isothermal bulk modulus of cubic phase K 0 = 252(28) GPa and its pressure derivative K ′=3.5(2.2). The thermal expansion coefficient of cubic phase at 25 GPa up to 1300 K was determined from interpolation of the P-V-T data obtained, and is 1.7(±0.7) × 10−5 K−1 at 25 GPa.

Notes: Abstract. Right ventricular diastolic function was evaluated by flow velocity pattern in the right ventricular inflow tract by means of pulsed Doppler echocardiography. Traditionally used to evaluate this function are peak velocities obtained during early diastole (peak E wave) and during atrial contraction (peak A wave), their ratio (peak E/A ratio), and the deceleration half-time. We conducted pulsed Doppler echocardiographic studies of right ventricular inflow and outflow patterns in 171 children (105 normal children and 66 children who were undergoing total surgical repair of congenital heart defects without sequelae). Results showed that summation flow was present in the right ventricular inflow tract in 43 (25%) of the 171 subjects, which made it difficult to separate the peak E wave from the peak A wave. We noted the presence of antegrade late diastolic flow (DW) in the right ventricular outflow tract of all subjects. DW, measured in 121 subjects in whom both E and A waves were detected in the right ventricular inflow tract, showed a highly significant correlation (p 〈 0.0001) with A waves in the right ventricular inflow tract. The ratio of DW to right ventricular outflow tract velocities during systole (SW) showed a highly significant (p 〈 0.0001) correlation with E/A ratio. When evaluating right ventricular diastolic function by pulsed Doppler, especially in children, the analysis of right ventricular outflow tract patterns is helpful in addition to that of inflow tract patterns. The DW and DW/SW ratio may present good alternatives to traditional parameters in children.
