Notes: The phase evolution of lead titanate processed by the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the cubic perovskite PbTiO3 (PT) phase is formed from an inorganic amorphous precursor at a temperature of 444°C. A gradual transition from cubic to tetragonal perovskite PT was observed with the increase of calcination time at this temperature. HRTEM results showed that the cubic PT particles have a size of around 5 nm. The identification of cubic PT as an intermediate phase supports the hypothesis that the chemical homogeneity was kept at the molecular level during the synthesis process, with no cation segregation.

Notes: summary  For much human activity there exists a ‘lateral preference’, that is a tendency to use one side of the body or the other; with respect to the hands for example, the vast majority of individuals have a preference for either the right or left hand. Most experts agree that mastication is no exception in that there is a ‘preferred chewing side’ but the determination of this preference is somewhat complex. This research analyses the mastication of 60 healthy subjects by means of preferred chewing side or ‘PCS’ tests, the Kazazoglu test, and kinesiography (KGF). While some authors consider the PCS to be the side which first comes into contact with the food we prefer to define it as the side on which the majority of the cycles analysed and registered take place. The objective of this research was to analyse the relationship that might exist between the two different methods used for determining a lateral chewing preference. Although there was no statistically significant agreement between the two techniques, both reflected the fact that there was a marked preference for the right hand side.

Notes: Background Allergic reactions to pea (Pisum sativum) ingestion are frequently associated with lentil allergy in the Spanish population. Vicilin have been described as a major lentil allergen. Objective To identify the main IgE binding components from pea seeds and to study their potential cross-reactivity with lentil vicilin. Methods A serum pool or individual sera from 18 patients with pea allergy were used to detect IgE binding proteins from pea seeds by immunodetection and immunoblot inhibition assays. Protein preparations enriched in pea vicilin were obtained by gel filtration chromatography followed by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). IgE binding components were identified by means of N-terminal amino acid sequencing. Complete cDNAs encoding pea vicilin were isolated by PCR, using primers based on the amino acid sequence of the reactive proteins. Results IgE immunodetection of crude pea extracts revealed that convicilin (63 kDa), as well as vicilin (44 kDa) and one of its proteolytic fragments (32 kDa), reacted with more than 50% of the individual sera tested. Additional proteolytic subunits of vicilin (36, 16 and 13 kDa) bound IgE from approximately 20% of the sera. The lentil vicilin allergen Len c 1 strongly inhibited the IgE binding to all components mentioned above. The characterization of cDNA clones encoding pea vicilin has allowed the deduction of its complete amino acid sequence (90% of sequence identity to Len c 1), as well as those of its reactive proteolytic processed subunits. Conclusions Vicilin and convicilin are potential major allergens from pea seeds. Furthermore, proteolytic fragments from vicilin are also relevant IgE binding pea components. All these proteins cross-react with the major lentil allergen Len c 1.

Notes: summary  It is difficult to determine the existence of a normal or physiological masticatory cycle, because there exists great individual diversity. This study presents some data about two parameters of masticatory cycles according to the frontal plane, i.e. the area and length of right-sided and left-sided cycles in a group of 30 young people, 18 women and 12 men. For our study the Myotronics K6-1 kinesiograph was used. It registers the magnetic field and allows us to obtain graphic recordings of the jaw movement in the three space planes. Other authors have analysed these parameters, but none of those reviewed provides information about the distribution to each side or according to the gender of sampling subjects selected for the analysis. We have tried to describe the normal morphology of the masticatory cycles and, also, establish a reference so as to provide help in the diagnosis of the functional pathology of the masticatory system.

Notes: Abstract  Complete rupture of the hamstring muscles is a rare injury. The proximal musculo-tendinous junction is the most frequent site of rupture. We present two cases of complete rupture of the distal semimenbranosus tendon, which clinically presented as soft-tissue masses. MR imaging permitted the correct diagnosis. There has been only one other such case reported.

Notes: Abstract The effect of Ta2O5 doping in 0.99SnO2·0.01CoO on the microstructure and electrical properties of this ceramic were analyzed in this study. The grain size was found to decrease from 6.87 μm to 5.68 μm when the Ta2O5 concentration increased from 0.050 to 0.075 mol%. DC electrical characterization showed a dramatic increase in the current loss and decrease in the non-linear coefficient with the increase of the Ta2O5 concentration. The conduction mechanism is by thermionic emission and the potential barriers are of Schottky type, separated by a thin film.

Notes: Abstract SrTiO3 thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method and deposited by spin-coating onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. The spin-coated films heat treated at 700°C were crack-free, dense, and homogeneous. Microstructural and morphological evaluations were followed by grazing incident X-ray, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Dielectric studies indicated a dielectric constant of about 475, which is higher than that of ceramic SrTiO3, and a factor dissipation of about 0.050 at 100 kHz. SrTiO3 thin films were found to have paraelectric properties with C-V characteristics.
