Notes: Acoustic velocities of Pd39Ni10Cu30P21 bulk metallic glass (BMG) are measured by an ultrasonic technique upon annealing. The elastic constants and the Debye temperature are obtained. A large softening of the transverse phonon is exhibited in the as-quenched BMG relative to its crystallized state. Upon crystallization, the shear modulus and the Debye temperature increase by ∼30% and ∼12%, respectively; however, the density increases by only ∼0.6%. Some anomalous acoustic and elastic behaviors are observed near the glass transition temperature and in the supercooled liquid region of the BMG. The anomalies are explained with regard to the structural changes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A reversible phase transition between amorphous and crystalline in bulk metallic glass (BMG) Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 has been investigated under high pressure at room temperature. The BMG displayed a structure memory under high pressure as detected by in situ synchrotron radiation of x-ray diffraction and resistance measurement in a diamond anvil cell. Direct experimental observations found that the crystallization of the BMG occurred at 24 GPa on uploading and the crystalline phase reverted back to the amorphous state during downloading. This unusual phenomenon was discussed thermodynamically. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Lateral thermal wet oxidization of the AlAs layer in a GaAs/AlAs/GaAs sandwiched structure is studied by Raman spectroscopy and Nomarski microscopy. A significant improvement in thermal stability of the oxidized AlAs layer has been achieved by optimizing the oxidation conditions, which can be used to fabricate reliable devices. We show that the thermal stability is strongly related to the removal of volatile products, such as As and As2O3, as evidenced by the Raman spectroscopy measurement. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The pressure-dependent acoustic velocities of a Pd39Ni10Cu30P21 bulk metallic glass (BMG) have been measured up to 0.5 GPa by using an ultrasonic technique with the pulse echo overlap method. The elastic constants, the Debye temperature, and their pressure dependence are obtained. The isothermal equation of state (EOS) of the BMG is established in terms of the Murnaghan form. The atomic configurations of the BMG are discussed by comparing the elastic constants and the EOS with those of its metallic component and of other amorphous materials. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  This paper reports a research effort to design, microfabricate and test a DC type magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) micropump using LIGA method (Menz et al., 1991). The micropump is driven using the Lorentz force and can be used to deliver electrically conductive fluids. In operation, a DC voltage is supplied across the electrodes to generate the distributed body force on the fluid in the pumping chamber, and therefore a constant pressure difference along the pumping chamber. The external magnetic field was supplied using permanent magnets. The major advantage of a MHD-based micropump is that it does not contain any moving parts. It may have potential applications in medicine delivery, biological and biomedical studies. The test of the DC prototype micropump shows that bubble generation mechanism affect the performance significantly and an AC driving mechanism may be used to improve the performance.

Notes: A perturbative theory has been developed to model the spectral line shapes affected by line-mixing and finite duration-of-collision. The line profile was given in an explicit form tractable for dealing with the line interference and asymmetry problems. The coupling of line-mixing and collision-duration was studied. The simplified model was conditionally applied to the CO2 ν3 high-frequency wing beyond the bandhead, and was found to reproduce the experimental absorption coefficients well. The effective collision-duration parameters were obtained from the fit of the ν3 band edge and from the typical CO2–CO2 collision time of 1 ps. These parameters were then used to calculate the Q-branch core region of the CO2 ν2 band near 667 cm−1. The coupling effect from line-mixing and finite-duration was theoretically shown to be discernible at the pressure of 1 amagat. This effect grows with increased pressures and, expectedly, becomes significant for higher pressures. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract:  Although genetics analyses have identified the HLA-Cw6 allele to be the major risk allele for psoriasis vulgaris (PV) in many racial groups, it has been proposed that other putative genes near the HLA-C locus are involved in PV susceptibility and that the association of Cw6 is a result of linkage disequilibrium. The SPR1 gene, a predicted gene located 128 kb telomeric to the HLA-C locus, is considered to be one potential candidate gene of PV. Until now, no association study of the SPR1 gene has been conducted on psoriasis patients. We investigated the SPR1 gene for disease association by direct sequencing of the SPR1 gene in 116 Chinese patients with PV and 116 normal subjects. Genotyping for HLA-Cw6 was also carried out using polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism. Significant increase of the HLA-Cw6 allele was found in psoriasis patients (32.8% vs. 13.8%, P = 0.001). We found that the SPR1 gene is a highly polymorphic gene containing 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), two of which have not been previously reported, and four SNPs cause amino acid change. No significantly different allelic distribution of 13 SPR1 SNPs could be found between the patients with PV and controls after correction for multiple testing. If the frequencies of SPR1 SNPs were compared between the early onset psoriatics and control subjects, early onset patients were more likely to have G allele at position 988 (60% vs. 35.3%, P = 0.001). However, the significance disappeared upon stratification for the Cw6 status. Haplotype-based association analysis showed two susceptibility haplotypes (types 8 and 19) in early onset psoriasis patients. Nonetheless, the significance also disappeared after stratification of the Cw6 status. Our results suggest that HLA-Cw6 remains the major risk allele in Chinese psoriatics, and that the SPR1 gene might not play an important role in the causation of PV.

Notes: Co-based Gd3Co29−xCrx compounds with a Nd3(Fe,Ti)29-type of structure have been synthesized successfully for x=6.5 and 7.0. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the Gd3Co29−xCrx compounds have been investigated by x-ray diffraction analysis and magnetic measurements. It has been found that Gd3(Co,Cr)29 with x=6.5 and 7.0 are of ferrimagnetic compounds with Curie temperature of 412 K for x=6.5 and 359 K for x=7.0, respectively. Temperature dependence of the magnetization shows a compensation point of the magnetization at the certain temperature below the Curie temperature. The intersublattice molecular field coefficient, nRT, was derived to be 3.3 T f.u./μB for Gd3Co22.5Cr6.5 on the basis of the magnetization curve at the compensation temperature. It is noteworthy that the Gd3(Co,Cr)29 compounds exhibit favorable easy-axis anisotropy in the whole temperature range below Curie temperature. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
