Notizen: Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of Nd:YAG laser irradiation in disinfecting the root canal system. Seventy-five teeth were uniformly instrumented and sterilized, and their root canals were infected for 60 min with an overnight culture of Enterococcus faecalis in Tryptic Soy Broth. The teeth were divided into 6 groups: 1 - non-infected controls; 2 - infected controls; 3 - infected, laser treated; 4 - infected, laser dummy (dye only); 5 - infected, laser dummy (dye and air-water spray); 6 - infected, NaOCl-treated (reference group). After treatment, the root canals were dried and dentinal shavings removed for a post-treatment culture. Quantitative analysis of bacteria surviving the various treatments were performed, and the bacterial counts for each group were compared. SEM analysis of teeth split longitudinally was used to illustrate the effect of treatment on the smear layer and on surface bacteria. Nd:YAG laser irradiation (group 3) significantly reduced the number of bacteria while NaOCl irrigation (group 6) effectively disinfected the canals.

Notizen: Abstract We observed abundant Pick argentophilic inclusion bodies (PBs) as well as some atypical Lewy bodies (LBs) in the locus ceruleus (LC) from a patient with Pick's disease. In addition, there were a few neurons which contained both PBs and LBs. PBs in the LC frequently appeared multiple and had lobulated or irregular shapes, though their ultrastructural elements were the same as those of the PBs appearing in the cerebral cortex, and consisted of randomly arranged smooth-surfaced straight tubules of 15 nm in diameter, mixed with a small number of long-period constricted fibrils. The ultrastructure of the LB coexisting with PB was identical with that previously reported; a dense core was surrounded by concentric layers of radially oriented 10-nm filaments and was clearly distinguishable from the PB. Immunohistochemical examination with various antibodies related to neurofibrillar pathology demonstrated that anti-tau antibodies reacted positively with both PB and the rim portion of LB in the present case; an unusual finding for LB. The anti-neurofilament 200-kDa protein stained only LBs, even when PBs and LBs coexisted in the same neuron. These findings show that two kinds of neuronal fibrillar inclusions, whose underlying cytoskeletal abnormalities are thought to be different, can coexist in the same neuron. In addition, the formation of multiple, lobulated PBs may suggest some particularity of cytoskeletal composition of the LC neurons.

Notizen: Abstract  At Shiotani, SW Japan, rhyolitic welded tuff forms a steep-sided funnel-shaped body, confined by Paleogene granitic rocks to an elliptical area 1–1.5 km across. The Shiotani welded tuff is pervasively welded and foliated concordantly with the contact that dips inward at angles of 70–90°. In contrast, nearby contemporary volcaniclastic deposits are non-welded and gently inclined. Near the contact with the granite, the tuff is plastically deformed and shows lineations that plunge inward at angles of 40–65°. Lithic and crystal clasts in the rheomorphic outer part are rotated in a plane normal to the foliations and parallel to the lineations indicating downward flow of the welded tuff. The geometry and internal structures suggest that the Shiotani welded tuff was emplaced and welded in a funnel-shaped eruption conduit. Upon collapse of a plinian or phreatoplinian eruption column, the majority of the conduit-filling pyroclasts probably fell back en masse into the conduit. Heat and steam from underlying magma and diffusion of interstitial volatiles into the glass perhaps reduced the viscosity of juvenile pyroclasts and facilitated welding in the conduit, especially at deep levels. The hot welded pyroclasts then flowed down the conduit wall during welding compaction and retreat of the magma. These processes resulted in increased welding toward the contacts and welding foliations concordant with the steep wall. Emplacement of nearby correlative volcaniclastic mass-flow deposits in a shelf to upper bathyal environment suggests a possibility that, when active, the Shiotani conduit was under the sea. Welding compaction would occur even under the sea provided that the steam generated in the upper part of the conduit fill prevented water access.

Notizen: Abstract The catalytic activity of KGa-priderite, K1.6Ga1.6Ti6.4O16, and its related compound KGa8Ga9Ti15O56 was investigated for the selective reduction of nitrogen monoxide (NO) with propylene (C3H6) in the presence of high oxygen concentrations. The KGa-priderite showed significant activity during this reaction, but the related compound showed only a little activity. These compounds are quite different from the conventional catalysts for NOx selective reduction and are characterized by the fact that their properties are free from the effects of solid acidity and support metals. This difference was attributable to the NO desorption rate at the surface of these compounds. It has become clear that the KGa-priderite catalyst remarkably adsorbed NO, and it is suggested that the amount of NO adsorbed and the amount of catalytic activity are able to be increased by the design of priderite structure.
