    Notes: Abstract To evaluate the osmoregulatory ability of eyedstage embryos of laboratory-reared chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, we examined changes in osmolality of the perivitelline fluid and blood following transfer to 50 and 100% seawater (SW), together with morphological changes in chloride cells present in the yolk sac membrane. Transfer to SW did not cause any significant change in the whole egg weight. However, the embryos shrank when the eggs were transferred to SW, whereas the perivitelline space increased at the expense of the embryo. Osmolality of the perivitelline fluid increased rapidly to reach environmental levels 3 h after transfer, indicating that the egg shell is permeable to ions and water. Blood osmolality increased after transfer to SW, reached a peak level at 3 h, and then decreased gradually. The chloride cells in the yolk sac membrane became activated following transfer, as shown by increased cell size and frequent appearance of apical openings. These results indicate that the eyed-stage embryos of chum salmon possess hypoosmoregulatory ability and that chloride cells in the yolk sac membrane may be involved in salt extrusion, in place of gill chloride cells, during the late embryonic stage.

    Notes: Summary  The co-existence of multiple cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and a spinal AVM is extremely rare. A 22-year-old man suddenly developed severe headache. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed intracerebral haemorrhage in the left occipital lobe. Cerebral angiography revealed eight AVMs; four were in the right frontal lobe and two each were in the right temporal and left occipital lobe, respectively. A huge high-flow spinal AVM was found incidentally. He had no other vascular lesions such as hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia. A left occipital craniotomy was performed and the ruptured left occipital AVMs were removed. Further therapeutic treatment was refused. To our knowledge, except for one autopsy case, this is the first reported patient with multiple cerebral AVMs with a spinal AVM. We discuss the characteristics of this case and review reported cases with cerebral and spinal AVMs.

    Notes: Summary ¶ Objective. To compare abnormal intensity areas on intracranial magnetic resonance images (MRI) and the pattern of venous drainage in dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) with retrograde venous drainage.  Methods. Thirteen patients with retrograde venous drainage of DAVFs were divided into two groups based on the venous drainage pattern determined by detailed angiographic and MRI study. In group 1 there was an accessory route draining into another sinus besides the main draining sinus. In group 2 no such accessory route was present.  Results. In group 1 patients (n=8), MRI detected no unusual intensity areas; 5 patients in this group had episodes of bleeding. Angiographically, in this group retrograde venous drainage tended to occur via multiple varices. On the other hand, none of the 5 group 2 patients experienced a bleeding episode. Angiographically, there was a low incidence of varices. On T2-weighted images, these patients had a hyperintensity area. Following treatment, these areas of abnormality disappeared on T2-weighted MRI.  Conclusion. Among 13 patients with DAVFs which drained retrogradely, those with a variceal accessory route (Group 1, n=8) had a higher incidence of haemorrhage. In patients without such an accessory route (Group 2, n=5) abnormal signal intensity on MRI was indicative of venous congestion. Continuous-mode angiography and MRI study were useful in the precise identification of DAVFs with a venous drainage route.

    Notes: A new type of endo-pectic acid transeliminase was isolated from the culture medium of a strain of Bacillus. The enzyme attacked pectic substances randomly and produced un saturated trigalacturonic acid as the major end product. The optimum pH on either acid-soluble pectic acid or tetragalaeturonic acid was 9.3–9.7, and the enzyme required calcium ions for maximum activity. Strontium was the only other divalent cation which stimulated activity. Trigalacturonic acid was attacked very slowly. The major site of attack of tetragalacturonic acid was the glycosidic bond on the nonreducing end. Unsaturated tetragalacturonic acid was also attacked at the central bond. The cleavage of pentagalacturouic acid occurred preferentially at bond 3, followed by 4 and 2, in order. The glycosidic bond on the reducing end is called bond 1. With unsaturated pentagalacturonic acid, it was concluded that the major site of cleavage was at bond 3, with a much slower rate at bond 2.

    Notes: SUMMARY– An unsaturated oligogalacturonate hydrolase was isolated from the cell extracts of a Bacillus sp. This enzyme attacked only the a 1,4 glycosidic bond adjacent to the terminal 4,5dehydrogalacturonate of unsaturated oligogalacturonides and preferentially attacked short chain unsaturated uronides. The rate of activity was maximal with unsaturated dimer followed by trimer (65% that of dimer), tetramer (47%) and pentamer (35%). The pH optimum was 6.3 to 6.6 and the enzyme did not require calcium ions for its activity. The enzyme was relatively stable below 30°C but lost 90% of its activity after 10 min at 40°C.

    Notes: SUMMARY: The changes in polygalacturonase (PG) activity during ripening and the relationship between its activity and the quality of Deglet Noor dates were studied. PG activity, which was virtually absent at the green stage, began to develop as maturity progressed. The greatest part of the development occurred at the late red stage and activity reached its maximum when the fruits commenced softening. Among the four grades of dates used in this study the activity was highest with natural, followed by waxy, number 1 dry and number 2 dry grades. The dates contained 0.9-1.3 units of PG per g of fresh tissue. The results of chemical and physical analyses related to the texture are also reported.

    Notes: : A method to recover multi-gram quantities of limonoid glucosides from citrus molasses using ion-exchange and styrene/divinylbenzene resins has been developed. A cation exchange resin is used to decolorize the molasses, while an anion exchanger is used to separate limonoid glucosides from other negatively charged compounds. Styrene/divinylbenzene resins are used to bind limonoid glucosides and remove water-soluble materials. The method affords approximately 5 grams of a water-soluble powder containing over 60% by weight limonoid glucosides per liter of molasses. An analysis of the efficiency of the method shows that less than 10% of the total limonoid glucosides are lost during recovery.
