Notes: The Prognostic significance of lymphvascular invasion (LVI) in stage: IB cervix cancer remains controversial in spite of several recent reports in this literature. This report analyses the impact of LVI in patients undergoing surgery followed by postoperative radiation therapy. The clinical-pathological records of 110 patients with stage IB carcinoma of the cervix cancer remains controversial in spite of several recent reports in this literature. This report analyses the impact of LVI in patients undergoing surgery followed bu postoperative radiation therapy.sessed for grade, positive margins, depth of invasion, positive nodes, and LVI. Only LVI showed a significant correlation (P = 0.0002) with local failure. Thirty-two patients with squamous cell carcinoma and LVI were identified. Seventeen of these patients received postoperative radiotherapy and 15 patients received no adjuvant therapy. Both groups were traced for outcome. Four of the 15 patients (27%) with LVI treated with surgery alone developed local recurrence, compared to 0/17 patients who received postoperative radiotherapy (P = 0.038). The 5-year and 7-year survival of the entire group was excellent, 97.2% and 94.9% respectively. There was a trend towards significance (P = 0.07) in survival between LVI+ and LVI− patients.Lymphvascular invasion was significantly associated with increased local failure in our analysis. Although prospective randomized trials are in progress to further evaluate this issue there is growing concern about low accrual because of physicians biases regarding this controversial issue. Adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy appears beneficial in improving local control for LVI patients in our study, but its impact on survival is still questionable. We recommend enrollment of patients in a national cooperative trial whenever possible. Treatment of patients off protocol solely for LVI+ is still quite controversial and must be left to the discretion of the clinician.

Notes: Soft materials have long been sought after for use in devices such as actuators, artificial muscles, separators, switches, sensors, memories, and so forth. We developed a soft, optically transparent material using polymer gels that can not only be activated by visible light (switched on) but also deactivated (switched off) by altering the local environment using three different means: pH, temperature, and light. This copolymer gel is a covalently cross-linked network of N-isopropylacrylamide, sodium acrylate, and a chromophore, which is found to undergo phase transitions exhibiting large hysteresis in the degree of swelling in response to pH, temperature, and light. In each system, between the transitions for swelling and shrinking, the gel can show either a swollen or a collapsed state, which can be selected according to the history of the variables. It has been established that a thermoresponsive gel with chromophore exhibits a local volume phase transition upon illumination with visible light. By making use of this phenomenon, we have successfully controlled the phase in which a gel exists with visible light: Without light illumination the gel stays in the swollen state. Upon illumination beyond a threshold intensity, however, a volume transition is locally induced, thereby forming a material in which both phases coexist stably for at least several hours after the light source has been removed. The phenomenological stability of the material in the coexistence state is discussed on the basis of the Landau theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Singly charged cations of silver atoms and clusters (Agn+, n=1,3,5,7,9) were deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrates at well-controlled, various collision energies. The total amount of Ag atoms remaining on the substrates after collision was quantified by measuring the Ag 3d5/2 photoelectron intensities. The collision energy dependence of the amount of deposited Ag atoms revealed that, for all the species, there are three distinct energy regions, for which soft landing, rebounding, or implantation is a dominant process, and that the energy ranges for the processes strongly depend on the cluster size. The deposition efficiency vs collision energy curve for each cluster is well fitted to that for Ag1, by considering the difference between the contact area of Ag1 with the surface and that of the cluster, reflecting the compactness of the clusters. Boundaries between the different deposition regimes for the clusters were less distinct than those for Ag1. Considering anisotropy in shape of a cluster, deposition efficiency around the implantation threshold was calculated, which well explains the indistinctness of the threshold observed in the experimental data. This supports the picture that the energy given to a unit surface area determines the collision process. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The susceptibility to photoinhibition of tree species from three different successional stages were examined using chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange techniques. The three deciduous broadleaf tree species were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, pioneer and early successional, Quercus mongolica, intermediate shade-tolerant and mid-successional, and Acer mono, shade-tolerant and late successional. Tree seedlings were raised under three light regimes: full sunlight (open), 10% full sun, and 5% full sun. Susceptibility to photoinhibition was assessed on the basis of the recovery kinetics of the ratio of vaviable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) of detached leaf discs exposed to about 2000 μmol m−1 s−1 photon flux density (PFD) for 2 h under controlled conditions (25 to 28 °C, fully hydrated). Differences in susceptibility to photodamage among species were not significant in the open and 10% full sun treatments. But in 5% full sun, B. platyphylla sustained a significantly greater photodamage than other species, probably associated with having the lowest photosynthetic capacity indicated by light-saturated photosynthetic rate (B. platyphylla, 9·87, 5·85 and 2·82; Q. mongolica, 8·05, 6·28 and 4·41; A. mono, 7·93, 6·11 and 5·08 μmol CO2 m−1 s−1for open, 10% and 5% full sun, respectively). To simulate a gap formation and assess its complex effects including high temperature and water stress in addition to strong light on the susceptibility to photoinhibition, we examined photoinhibition in the field by means of monitoring ΔF/F′m on the first day of transfer to natural daylight. Compared with ΔF/F′m in AM, the lower ΔF/F′m in PM responding to lower PFD following high PFD around noon indicated that photoinhibition occurred in plants grown in 10 and 5% full sun. The diurnal changes of ΔF/F′m showed that Q. mongolica grown in 5% full sun was less susceptible to photoinhibition than A. mono although they showed little differences both in photosynthetic capacity in intact leaves and susceptibility to photoinhibition based on leaf disc measurements. These results suggest that shade-grown Q. mongolica had a higher tolerance for additional stresses such as high temperature and water stress in the field, possibly due to their lower plasticity in leaf anatomy to low light environment.

Notes: The title compound {alternative nomenclature: 2-[4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene]-5,6-dihydro-1,3-dithiolo[4,5-b][1,4]dithiine}, C10H10S8, is a molecular crystal with typical values for bond distances and angles. The molecules form columns along the c axis. The intermolecular S...S distances indicate the presence of van der Waals interactions between the columns.

Notes: Abstract. Computed tomography scans, including thin-section high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), occasionally fail to differentiate between small non-cancerous nodules from lung cancers. We describe nine such lesions ( 〈 20 mm in diameter) initially identified through our screening program for lung cancer using CT scanning. Pathological diagnoses included nodular fibrosis (n = 4), granuloma (n = 1), cryptococcoma (n = 1), localised organising pneumonia (n = 1), inflammatory pseudo-tumour (n = 1) and sclerosing haemangioma (n = 1). High-resolution CT findings, together with MRI findings with contrast-enhanced dynamic studies, were retrospectively evaluated. Additional cases should be identified and radiologically characterised in order to reduce the number of non-cancerous tumours that are treated by unnecessary surgery.
