Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Au cours de 1160 arthroscopies nous avons découvert 16 kystes méniscaux.
Notes: Summary Two cases of unusual location of meniscal cysts were encountered in a large series of arthroscopies of the knee. These cysts were entirely intraarticular in relation to the substance of the lateral meniscus but without any joint line swelling or overt evidence of their presence. The cysts probably accounted for the symptoms of internal derangement of the knee and are likely to be encountered more often with increased used of knee arthroscopy.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. The unreamed femoral nail (UFN) system, with its numerous proximal interlocking options, allows a minimal invasive surgical procedure for the treatment of nearly all femoral fracture patterns. Sixty-six fractures, 5 cases of osteolysis or pathologic fractures, 2 limb shortenings and 1 lengthening (monorail technique) and 3 cases of pseudarthrosis were stabilised with the UFN from July 1994 to December 1996. The fractures were analysed according to the AO classification. We found 31 polytrauma patients with an mean ISS of 21.8 and a mean PTS of 25.4. Most of the multiply injured patients (n = 26) were stabilised with the UFN primarily. Follow-up of 44 patients ranged from 4 to 18 months postoperatively. According to our clinical and radiological score the results were excellent in 34 % of cases, good in 36.3 %, poor in 20.4 % and bad in 9 %. Average fracture healing time was about 9.8 weeks.

Notes: Abstract The glycolytic control enzyme phosphofructokinase from the parasitic nematodeAscaris lumbricodies is regulated by reversible phosphorylation. The enzyme is phosphorylated by an atypical cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase whose substrate specificity deviates from that of the mammalian protein kinase. This variation is explained by structural peculiarities on the surface part of the catalytic groove of the protein kinase. Also, the protein phosphatases responsible for the reversal of phosphorylation appear to act specifically in glycolysis and are different from those participating in regulation of glycogenolysis.

Notes: Abstract  The secretory vesicles of some cells of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas contain high amounts of immunoreactive tyrosine phosphatase of the PTP1B/TCPTP subfamily. The cells are located in the peripheral parts of the islets and were identified as glucagon- and pancreatic polypeptide-forming cells. The tyrosine phosphatase is also enriched in some of the somatostatin-producing cells but is not elevated either in insulin-producing B-cells or in the exocrine pancreas. Virtually the same patterns were found in pancretic tissues of rats, guinea pigs, pigs, and mice. High levels of detergent-soluble tyrosine phosphatase were measured in the particular fraction of pancreatic islets with a substrate preferred by PTP1B/TCPTP-type protein tyrosine phosphatases.

Notes: Abstract Laser Doppler flowmetry permits observation of circulation in the microcapillary regions of structures under in vivo conditions. We used a laser device manufactured by the Swedish company Perimed and a special probe to observe the capillary circulation in the anterior cruciate ligament during arthroscopic surgery. This produces measured values in millivolts: these values are relative in nature and cannot be used to determine an absolute value for capillary circulation by volume per unit time. Under standardized conditions, circulation measurements and simultaneous recordings with a twochannel recorder were made from 11 patients. In all cases, pulsations of the capillary circulation synchronous with the heart beat could be seen on three measuring points on the anterior cruciate ligament; these disappeared upon complete deprivation of blood supply. We found a large individual range of variation in the so-called blood cell flux values from 30 to 620mV. The magnitude of the heart-synchronous pulsations ranged between 20 and 240 mV. Only vague linear relationships were found (a) between the individual measuring points and (b) between the flux values and the magnitude of pulsation; there was no relationship between the flux values and blood pressure and/or red blood count (erythrocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit).
