    Notes: We have achieved long-pulse plasma heating using a negative-ion-based neutral beam injector (NBI) in the large helical device (LHD), where the confinement magnetic field is generated by only external superconducting coils. In the initial long-pulse experiments at lower power than that in short-pulse experiments, 80 keV–1.1 MW NBI heating lasted for 10 s with a little increase in the plasma density at the pulse end. Almost steady-state plasma heating was achieved for 21 s with 66 keV–0.6 MW NB injection. Plasma relaxation oscillation phenomena at a period of 1–2 s were also observed for 20 s. Above 1 keV plasma was easily sustained with a long-pulse NBI heating in LHD, without the current drive nor the disruption in tokamaks. Negative ion source operation was stable and the cooling water temperature rise of beam accelerator grids was nearly saturated with a temperature rise below 10 °C. For a higher power injection, the pulse duration is determined by the beam blocking, where the reionization loss is exponentially increased together with an increase in outgas in the injection port. The port conditioning by a careful repetition of injection is effective to the extension of the injection duration and the plasma maintenance duration. The initial long-pulse NBI heating at the reduced power has demonstrated an ability of steady-state operation in superconducting LHD. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Large Helical Device (LHD) experiments [O. Motojima, et al., Proceedings, 16th Conference on Fusion Energy, Montreal, 1996 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1997), Vol. 3, p. 437] have started this year after a successful eight-year construction and test period of the fully superconducting facility. LHD investigates a variety of physics issues on large scale heliotron plasmas (R=3.9 m, a=0.6 m), which stimulates efforts to explore currentless and disruption-free steady plasmas under an optimized configuration. A magnetic field mapping has demonstrated the nested and healthy structure of magnetic surfaces, which indicates the successful completion of the physical design and the effectiveness of engineering quality control during the fabrication. Heating by 3 MW of neutral beam injection (NBI) has produced plasmas with a fusion triple product of 8×1018 keV m−3 s at a magnetic field of 1.5 T. An electron temperature of 1.5 keV and an ion temperature of 1.4 keV have been achieved. The maximum stored energy has reached 0.22 MJ, which corresponds to 〈β〉=0.7%, with neither unexpected confinement deterioration nor visible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instabilities. Energy confinement times, reaching 0.17 s at the maximum, have shown a trend similar to the present scaling law derived from the existing medium sized helical devices, but enhanced by 50%. The knowledge on transport, MHD, divertor, and long pulse operation, etc., are now rapidly increasing, which implies the successful progress of physics experiments on helical currentless-toroidal plasmas. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Excimer laser- (248 nm) induced pyrene implantation in a solid polymer has been investigated in the forward-transfer configuration. Atomic force microscopy provides detailed topological images of the implanted surface, the geometry of which remains mostly unaltered following low-intensity laser radiation in contrast to a laser ablation transfer case. The dopant host polymer thickness appears to strongly influence the efficiency of the process. The experimental results are interpreted on the basis of a thermally activated ejection and implantation mechanism. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In order to clarify the effect of the atmospheric conditions on fatigue damage, rotary bending fatigue tests were carried out on smooth specimens of a normalized 0.37% carbon steel in controlled laboratory air. The air conditions used in the tests were moist air at 20 °C, moist air at 35 °C and dry air at 35 °C. The influence of atmosphere on crack initiation and propagation behaviour was investigated in detail based on successive observations of the surface. Experimental results showed that the fatigue life was superior at 20 °C compared to 35 °C by a factor of 2, while the effect of moisture was small compared to that of temperature. The statistical investigation of crack initiation and propagation behaviour indicated that the temperature strongly affects the crack initiation process; conversely, moisture plays an important role in the propagation process of cracks smaller than 0.3 mm. Moreover, the distribution characteristics of crack initiation life, crack propagation life, fatigue life and crack growth rate were analysed by assuming either a Weibull distribution or a log-normal distribution.

    Notes: Activity of fish muscle glutathione peroxidase, which presumably protects muscle from oxidative deterioration during storage and processing, was found in both Japanese jack mackerel and skipjack tuna. Activity of the peroxidase and level of reduced glutathione (enzyme substrate) decreased during 5 days storage at 4°C. Lipid hydroperoxides were substantially formed in the fish muscles during the storage.

    Notes: Abstract— Fatigue tests of sheet specimens having a central crack were carried out to study the effects of holes and dimples on the arrest of fatigue crack propagation. Two holes were drilled at some distance from, and at either side of, a crack tip, and the dimple of a certain diameter was introduced by pressing steel balls in the specimen at a crack tip. Results showed that the two holes produced an increase in crack propagation life (about 3 times) when the holes were drilled at an appropriate distance. On the other hand, the effect of a dimple on the fatigue strength was remarkably large, i.e. in the greatest case a 2.2 times increase in the fatigue endurance limit of cracked specimens and about a 50 times increase in the crack propagation life, at stresses above the fatigue limit. The main reason for the remarkable recovery of fatigue strength was the residual compressive stresses produced by the dimple. To evaluate the effect of residual compressive stresses on the da/dN vs. δK relation, a simple model is proposed. By using this model, the effect of residual stresses on crack propagation can be estimated quantitatively. Furthermore, the fatigue life of dimpled specimens was estimated based on the model.

    Notes: Accumulating evidence suggests a link between immediate hypersensitivity and cellular immunity. In this study, we examined the effect of interleukin 2 (IL-2) on basophil histamine release. Histamine-releasing activity of IL-2 was very weak with % histamine release of 2.9 ± 1.3 (mean ± SEM, n= 9) at 1:12 dilution. IL-2 at 1:1200 dilution slightly inhibited anti-IgE-induced histamine release by 22.4 ± 18.6% (P 〉 0.05). There was a significant potentiation of release at 1:12 dilution of IL-2 with % enhancement of 78.7 ± 42.2 (P 〈 0.05). IL-2 enhanced the calcium ionophore A23187-induced histamine release in a dose-dependent fashion. IL-2 at 1:12 dilution significantly potentiated release by 28.8 ± 6.3% (P 〈 0.05). There was a slight suppression of formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP)-induced histamine release at 1:1200 dilution with % inhibition of 23.4 ± 7 4 (P 〉 0.05). At 1:12 dilution, IL-2 significantly potentiated FMLP-induced release by 73.7 ± 41.6% (P 〈 0.05). Recombinant IL-2 (RIL-2) augmented anti-IgE-induced histamine release with a significant enhancement at 200 units/ml. Conventional IL-2 was more potent than RIL-2 in enhancing release. These results indicate that IL-2 enhances basophil histamine release and some part of the effect of IL-2 on basophils is derived from other factors contained in conventional IL-2.

    Notes: Summary. This review is based on 66 patients with partial-thickness tears of the rotator cuff, verified at operation. Their average age was 54 years, and all had symptoms of subacromial impingement. The duration of shoulder pain was for between 2 and 108 months (mean 11.4 months). Ultrasonography, arthrography and bursography were helpful in establishing the diagnosis. On exploration, tears were found in the supraspinatus tendon, with 9 extending into the infraspinatus. After anterior acromioplasty, excision of the diseased portion and tenorrhaphy were undertaken. Satisfactory results were obtained in 62 patients (94%) with an average follow-up of 32 months. Spontaneous repair at the torn site was never seen. In addition to Neer’s staging of impingement, we propose a new classification based on the integrity of the cuff tendon. We conclude that a partial-thickness cuff tear is an important cause of shoulder disability, which deserves much more clinical attention; misdiagnosis is common and leads to mismanagement. When conservative treatment fails, accurate diagnosis and proper surgical repair are essential.
