Notes: The effects of Nb addition on magnetic properties and irreversible flux loss were studied on bonded magnets with compositions of Nd8Fe86−xB6Nbx, where x=0–3. An irreversible flux loss was measured at Pc=2 after exposure at 393 K for 3.6 ks in air. It was found that the Nb addition of 2 at. % or more decreased the irreversible flux loss. The value was less than 5%, similar to that obtained with MQP-B magnets. Br decreased with the increase in Nb content. The effect of Nd content on the magnetic properties and irreversible flux loss was also studied on the bonded magnets with compositions of NdxFe92−xB6Nb2, where x=6–8. The bonded magnet with the optimum composition of Nd6.5Fe85.5B6Nb2 had Br similar to that of MQP-Q magnets that did not contain Nb, and the value of irreversible flux loss was comparable to that of MQP-B magnets. A multipole magnetizability test on the bonded magnets with the above optimum composition was carried out, and the total flux of the bonded magnets was about 10% higher than that of MQP-B magnets for the 23 mm outside diameter magnet with 48 poles. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Studies were conducted to determine the cardiovascular responses to leucine-enkephalin (L-enk) in three different species of animals; rabbit, dog and monkey. All animals were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium after sedation with ketamine. Mean blood pressure (MBP) and heart rate (HR) were simultaneously monitored. The pressor and HR responses to bilateral carotid occlusion (BCO) were determined before injection of L-enk. Increased MBP and HR due to BCO in monkey were significantly greater than in the other two animal groups. Following i.v. injection of L-enk (5–30 μg/kg), a significant fall in MBP occurred in all groups in a dose-dependent manner; however, the time course of changes in MBP in rabbits was significantly shorter than that in the other animal groups. Significant in HR after the injection of L-enk occurred in rabbits and dogs, whereas increases in HR occurred in monkeys. These results show that some cardiovascular responses to L-enk may be species dependent. These different cardiovascular responses to L-enk may be at least partly related to species differences in baroreceptor reflex sensitivity.

Notes: Abstract Background. Recent studies suggest that lectin binding activity is correlated with the metastasis and prognosis of several human carcinomas. Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) is a lectin that recognizes mainly N-acetyl-glucosamin (GalNAc) and acetyl-neuramic acid. However, little is known about WGA expression in gastric carcinoma. The purpose of this investigation was to clarify the significance of WGA expression in human gastric carcinoma. Methods. WGA binding was examined immunohistochemically in 353 specimens of primary gastric carcinomas from patients surgically treated at the First Department of Surgery, Fukushima Medical School, between 1980 and 1990. We studied the relationship between WGA expression and various clinicopathologic features and long-term survival. Results. Overall, 145/353 of the tumors (41%) were stained for WGA. WGA expression correlated with mean patient age, lymph node metastasis, venous invasion, and liver metastasis. Patients with tumors that were nonimmunoreactive for WGA had significantly lower 5-year survival rates than those with immunostained tumors (P 〈 0.05). WGA expression emerged as an independent prognostic factor on Cox's multivariate analysis. Conclusion. WGA binding is a useful prognostic indicator. Careful follow-up and intensive postoperative therapy are required for patients with gastric carcinomas that are nonimmunoreactive for WGA.

Notes: Abstract. The effects of tamoxifen (TAM) treatment on bone metabolism and skeletal growth were studied in sexually mature intact or ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Experiment 1 was designed to observe the effects of TAM on bone metabolism and skeletal growth in intact rats and included two groups: (1) intact plus vehicle and (2) intact plus TAM. Experiment 2 was designed to investigate the effects of TAM on OVX rats and included the other two groups: (3) OVX plus vehicle and (4) OVX plus TAM. Serum calcium osteocalcin and urinary pyridinoline (Pyr) and deoxypyridinoline (Dpyr) were measured serially before and after TAM treatment for 6 weeks in order to monitor bone turnover. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) of excised right femora and lumbar vertebrae were determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). To examine the effect of TAM on skeletal growth, the conventional parameters of femora and the histology of right tibiae were also measured. TAM did not induce significant change in the biochemical markers in intact rats during the 6-week experiment. Bone mass and skeletal growth were not changed by TAM treatment in intact rats. However, TAM treatment reduced the increase in serum osteocalcin and urinary pyridinium cross-links from 1 week to 6 weeks postovariectomy in the OVX rats. TAM inhibited the skeletal growth in OVX rats, because TAM treatment shortened femoral length and decreased the cell number in the growth plate in OVX rats in this study. Our findings indicate that TAM exerts an effect of estrogen agonist on bone metabolism and skeletal growth in OVX rats, however, it does not affect them in intact rats.

Notes: Abstract This study was designed to determine the effects of thromboxane A2 (TxA2) on the distribution of vascular resistance, lung weight, and microvascular permeability in isolated dog lungs perfused at a constant pressure with autologous blood. The stable TxA2 analogue (STA2; 30 μg, n = 5) caused an increase in pulmonary capillary pressure (Pc) assessed as double-occlusion pressure to 14.0 ± 0.4 mmHg from the baseline of 7.9 ± 0.3 mmHg with progressive lung weight gain. Pulmonary vascular resistance increased threefold exclusively due to pulmonary venoconstriction. Pulmonary venoconstriction was confirmed in lungs perfused in a reverse direction from the pulmonary vein to the artery (n = 5), as evidenced by marked precapillary vasoconstriction and a sustained lung weight loss. Furthermore, in lungs perfused at a constant blood flow (n = 5), STA2 also caused selective pulmonary venoconstriction. Vascular permeability measured by the capillary filtration coefficient and the isogravimetric Pc at 30 and 60 min after STA2 infusion did not change significantly from baseline in any lungs studied. Moreover, elevation of Pc by raising the venous reservoir of the intact lobes (n = 5) to the same level as the STA2 lungs caused a greater or similar weight gain compared with the STA2 lungs. Thus, we conclude that TxA2 constricts selectively the pulmonary vein resulting in an increase in Pc and lung weight gain without significant changes in vascular permeability in isolated blood-perfused dog lungs.

Notes: Abstract Magnetization and57Fe Mössbauer measurements were carried out on RFe12−x V x N y compounds (R=Y and Nd,x=1.7 and 2.2) and the effects of nitrogen and vanadium atoms on the57Fe hyperfine fields at the different iron crystallographic sites were investigated. The hyperfine field decreases with increasing number of vanadium neighbour atoms at all the iron sites. The hyperfine field is strongly enhanced in the nitrogen composition withy〉1 where the compound tends to transform into an amorphous-like solid. The iron moment deduced from the hyperfine field increases more upon nitrogenation for the 8i-site than for the other sites, and exceeds the moment of bcc iron.
