Notes: Single pentacene molecules containing 13C or 1H in a pentacene-d14 doped p-terphenyl crystal have been studied by fluorescence autocorrelation. The triplet dynamics has been analyzed and a systematic dependence of the S1→T1 intersystem crossing rate on isotopic composition was found. This variation is discussed in terms of a modulation of the near resonance of the first excited singlet state S1 and vibrational levels of an intermediating triplet state T3 which results from the distinct isotope dependence of the zero-point energy of both electronic states. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe an insert for optical and magnetic-resonance experiments on single molecules in a solid matrix at liquid-helium temperatures. The experimental arrangement allows in situ adjustment of the focusing lens and of the sample. A parabolic mirror serves to collect the fluorescence emission and to direct the light onto a photodetector. Microwaves can be irradiated through a coil around the sample while a superconducting magnet provides the possibility of a stationary magnetic field. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nanometer-scale structures are of great interest as potential building blocks for future electronic devices. One significant challenge is the electrical connection of such blocks by nanowires. We present here the use of filamentous biopolymer structures (microtubules) as a template for the creation of metallic nanowires. The microtubules served as a mask in an etching step of a thin metal layer. This approach results in formation of metallic paths (wires) of well-defined dimensions, with a shape determined by the biological template. Electrical measurements confirmed the realization of conductive metallic nanowires. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Weak satellites in S1←S0 excitation spectra of natural-abundance pentacene in p-terphenyl due to position-specific 13C isotope shifts were observed. An assignment of these satellites to the various carbon positions is derived. The extremely narrow inhomogeneous linewidth allowed selective excitation of pentacene molecules with 13C in specific positions. Spectra of the magnetic-resonance transition between triplet sublevels of such ensembles, and of individual pentacene molecules showed position-specific 13C hyperfine broadening. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In order to investigate the temporal behavior of dynamic flow processes, a movie version of particle image velocimetry (PIV) with a high framing capability has been developed. The experimental setup includes a copper vapor laser capable to produce pulse sequences with more than 100 pulses with a repetition rate of up to 30 kHz and a rotating drum camera to record the Mie scattering signals from the particles seeded to the flow. With this setup, image sequences with a number of consecutive images (40–70 depending on the image size) of a dynamic process can be taken on high resolution 36 mm film. To evaluate the 2-dimensional velocity vector fields, an algorithm based on the crosscorrelation of subareas in consecutive images has been developed and optimized in terms of computing time. The technique was applied to resolve the instationary flow field in a single cylinder spark ignition (SI) engine during the compression stroke.

Notes: Abstract A micro chip element with an integrated flow channel and thin film thermopiles was developed in order to realize a micro calorimeter for small volumes in a flow arrangement. The flow channel consists of two inlets, a mixing region, a measurement region, and one outlet. Thermopiles of BiSb/Sb thermocouples were used as thermal transducers because of their extraordinary high thermopower. A thin film heater of a NiCr alloy was integrated in order to yield the possibility of internal electrical calibration. In addition, this heater can be used for thermal modulation of the whole measurement system. The calorimeter was prepared using vacuum evaporation, PECVD and magnetron sputtering for thin film deposition and photolithography as well as chemical wet etching for microstructuring. The function of the device was tested to neutralize 400 nmole, 100 nmole and 10 nmole NaOH by H2SO4.

Notes: Abstract The skewness of broad Type 2-like spectra has been studied using data collected by two orthogonal CW 50-MHz radio links with co-located scattering volumes. Geometrical aspect angles of observations were about 10. One short event was considered. For this event, the electron flow direction was changing periodically (period about 9 minutes) presumably due to the passage of a magnetospheric MHD wave through the ionosphere. It was found that for the radar observations along the electrojet flow, the skewness had the same sign as the mean Doppler shift with average absolute values in between 0.5–1.0. For observations perpendicular to the electrojet flow, spectra were more symmetrical (average skewness was around 0) and the sign of the skewness was sometimes opposite to the sign of the mean Doppler shift. These observations are interpreted in terms of contribution from both the Farley-Buneman and gradient-drift instabilities to the resultant spectrum. Differences with radar observations at small aspect angles are discussed.

Notes: Summary The study of 17 cases of acute pancreatitis, in whom early total or subtotal pancreatic resection were performed, has led to the following therapeutic principles: the serious nature of acute post-operative pancreatitis has convinced us of the necessity for early intervention and as extensive a resection as possible; 5 out of 6 patients were cured in this way. In case of acute primary pancreatitis we are more conservative since even at laparotomy it is difficult to foresee the fate of all parts of the pancreas. Nevertheless our relatively favorable results led us to intervene surgically if the signs and symptoms of pancreatitis do not show any improvement after 8 to 12 h. If acute, diffuse pancreatitis affects the whole organ subtotal pancreatectomy is performed. If the head of the pancreas is affected we confine ourselves to the removal of necroses. Duodenopancreatectomy does not seem justified in the acute phase; only 1 out of 3 patients survived this procedure.
