    Notizen: We show that a drastic improvement of the current voltage characteristics of a ZnSe diode can be achieved by lowering the growth temperature of a ZnSe/ZnTe multi-quantum well p contact. A similar trend is observed when the thickness of the ZnTe cap layer on top of the multi-quantum well is reduced. Both observations show that the suppression of interdiffusion plays a dominant role in the formation of Ohmic contacts to p-ZnSe. A comparison between a conventional diode and a diode where the p-ZnSe has been replaced by p-ZnSTe shows that the interdiffusion process affects the ZnSe underneath the contact, and not the multi-quantum well contact itself. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Two partially-stabilized zirconia materials, Mg-PSZ and Y-PSZ, were investigated in static and cyclic fatigue tests. The crack growth rates were determined as a function of the stress intensity factor (static tests) and the stress intensity factor range (cyclic tests).     Notizen: Abstract Our purpose was to determine the value of a T1-weighted rapid three-dimensional gradient-echo technique in preoperative MRI of brain tumours. We examined 30 patients with intracranial tumours who underwent neurosurgery, using T1-weighted magnetisation-prepared rapid gradient-echo (MP-RAGE) and axial T1-weighted spin-echo (SE) sequences, both before and after contrast medium (Gd-DTPA). Signal and contrast behaviour of anatomical and pathological structures were assessed with regions-of-interest (ROI) and visual inspection. Imaging results were compared with operative results. In 5 cases tumours and anatomical structures were segmented in MP-RAGE data sets. The MP-RAGE sequence considerably improved delineation of grey and white matter and small anatomical structures (vessels, cranial nerves), and significantly reduced flow artefacts. Contrast behaviour of tumours was similar with both techniques. Correlation of imaging with the operative results confirmed the reliability of the MP-RAGE sequence. Segmentation of MP-RAGE data sets allows three-dimensional display, which enables one to document the relevant information on a few images in selected cases.

    Notizen: Abstract  The aim of the study was to test whether fractionated (weekly) idarubicin administration to multiply pretreated leukemia patients is effective and tolerable for outpatient treatment, and whether idarubicin alone can overcome P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-related resistance. P-gp was assessed with an immunocytological technique using the monoclonal antibody 4E3.16. P-gp expression was characterized as a percentage of P-gp-positive blasts. Additionally, the function of P-gp was determined with the rhodamine-123 (R-123) accumulation test in combination with or without verapamil and expressed as the R123 accumulation ratio. Fractionated idarubicin (12 mg/m2/week) was given to 36 acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) patients, 12 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients, and eight chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients in blast crisis. Furthermore, 11 AML and four ALL patients were treated with fractionated daunorubicin at a dose of 50 mg/m2/week. All patients had been pretreated with drugs inducing P-gp-related resistance including daunorubicin and/or doxorubicin or vindesine (CML patients). Of 71 pretreated patients, 51 (72%) had a P-gp value between 25 and 98%. Six of these patients with increased P-gp expression had a nonpumping P-gp; four of them were CD34 positive. Of 51 patients with increased P-gp expression, 30 (59%) were CD34 positive. With regard to idarubicin monotherapy, overall response was 33/56 (59%) patients, and 23/33 (70%) responding patients showed a P-gp expression between 25 and 95%. All idarubicin-responding patients with high P-gp expression before treatment showed a clear reduction of P-gp-positive blasts. No patients with P-gp expression between 34 and 85% treated with fractionated daunorubicin showed response or reduction of P-gp-positive blasts in bone marrow. This study demonstrates that P-gp-related resistance can be overcome in multiply pretreated leukemia patients with idarubicin alone, and that the protocol used here is tolerable for outpatient treatment.

    Notizen: Abstract Surface ozone data from 25 Europeanlow-altitude sites and mountain sites located between79°N and 28°N were studied. The analysiscovered the time period March 1989–February 1993.Average summer and winter O3 concentrations inthe boundary layer over the continent gave rise togradients that were strongest in the north-west tosouth-east direction and west-east direction, respectively. WintertimeO3 ranged from 19 to 27 ppbover the continent, compared to about 32 ppb at thewestern border, while for summer the continentalO3 values ranged between 39 and 56 ppb and theoceanic mixing ratios were around 37 ppb. In the lowerfree troposphere average wintertime O3 mixingratios were around 38 ppb, with only an 8 ppbdifference between 28°N and 79°N. For summerthe average O3 levels decreased from about 55 ppbover Central Europe to 32 ppb at 79°N. Inaddition, O3 and Ox(= O3 + NO2)in polluted and clean air were compared. Theamplitudes of the seasonal ozone variations increasedin the north-west to south-east direction, while thetime of the annual maximum was shifted from spring (atthe northerly sites) to late summer (at sites inAustria and Hungary), which reflected the contributionof photochemical ozone production in the lower partsof the troposphere.

    Notizen: Abstract Electron beam probing is applied for test and analysis of miniaturisedMCM structures. Wiring structures are tested for shorts and opens while fullyassembled MCMs are analysed in order to identify process or design problems[1, 2]. An electron beam short/open tester for laminated substrates has beendeveloped and installed. It allows the test of substrates up to a size of300 × 300 mm2 with a spot size ofbelow 30 μm without mechanical movement. The system is automated for routineapplication in the fabrication line. Electron beam probe stations are common tools for design verification and debugging ofintegrated circuits. This type of system was adapted to MCMrequirements. The travel range was extended to 80 × 100 mm2 to allow for waveform measurements anddiagnostics.
